If you can’t chat with a friend in Roblox, the cause is usually one of four things: an age check that isn’t complete, a Communication setting that excludes that friend, a parent-managed restriction on a child account, or a trusted-friend requirement that isn’t met. Roblox ties friend chat to three conditions at once: your age group, which is confirmed through an age check; your privacy settings; and your region. Work through the checks below in order, because the first one that fails is the one to fix.
Which chat is missing
Roblox treats friend chat, in-game chat, direct chat, Party and voice as separate features with separate controls. Before changing anything, identify which one is blocked, because each has a different place to check.

Check 1: Confirm your age check is complete
Roblox requires an age check before friend chat and other chat features can be used. Roblox Support’s “How to chat on Roblox” article states: “Users will not be able to enable chat through their settings until they complete an age check.” If the age check is still outstanding, no chat setting will work, regardless of what your friends have selected.
Roblox lists two ways to complete it:
- Facial age estimation.
- ID verification. This option is available only to users aged 13 and above.
Check 2: Review who you have allowed to chat with you
Roblox lets you choose who may chat with you. Friend chat is controlled at Settings > Privacy & content maturity > Communication > Chat and Party with friends. Depending on your age, the audience you can choose is all friends, trusted friends, or no one. If the setting is “no one,” friend chat will not open for anyone, so a single friend’s account can’t fix it from their side.

What a trusted friend requires
Trusted friends require a two-way connection, so both accounts must have added each other as trusted. If you are set to trusted friends only and the friend in question is not on that list, the chat will stay closed even though you are friends on the platform.
Check 3: Child accounts and parental controls
If the account is a child’s account, a linked parent controls chat separately from the child’s own settings. A parent can manage Game chat, Game direct chat, Friends chat and Party independently. To review them, the parent should go to:

- Settings > Parental Controls.
- Select the child’s account.
- Open Settings you manage.
- Select Communication, then review Game chat, Game direct chat, Friends chat and Party.
Whether a feature needs parental consent depends on the child’s age. A feature can be switched off on the parent’s side even when the child’s own Communication settings look correct, so check both.
Check 4: Age group and region
Roblox sorts users into age groups for communication, and it says these groups, along with feature access, may vary by region and product. Two friends can therefore see different chat options: one may have trusted-friend chat or extra features that the other does not. Roblox’s friend-chat support page states: “To chat with your friends on Roblox, you must meet Roblox’s communication requirements based on your age group (via age check), privacy settings, and region.” Because the same features can carry different names, a menu labelled “Party” in one place may be labelled “Chat” in another.

When only one friend is affected
If you can chat with some friends but not one particular person, the problem is usually the connection or the audience setting rather than your account. Check these:
- Whether your Communication audience is set to trusted friends, and whether that friend is on your trusted list in both directions.
- Whether the two of you are in different age groups, since eligibility and extra chat features depend on age group.
- Whether your accounts are in different regions, since feature availability varies by region.
Why chat can look filtered
Filtered chat is the default for eligible communication, and Roblox says players’ safety settings vary by age. A message that appears altered or blocked is therefore a moderation result, not necessarily a fault in the chat feature itself.

When every check passes
If the age check is complete, the audience setting includes your friend, any parent-managed controls are switched on, and your age group and region support the feature, the official friend-chat and trusted-friend pages direct users to Roblox Support. Contact Roblox Support through the help center if access still does not return after these steps.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will a new device, headset or router fix Roblox chat?
Usually not. The causes that the official support pages describe are account eligibility, the age check, Communication settings, parental controls and regional availability. Hardware such as a headset, controller or router does not change any of those.
Can my friend fix this by changing their own settings?
Only partly. If your friend’s Communication audience is set to no one, or if trusted-friend chat requires a two-way connection they have not established, their change matters. However, your own age check and any parent-managed restrictions on your account must also allow chat.
