Most failed attempts to add mods come from one mismatch: a Java Edition mod is being used with Bedrock Edition, or a mod is being run without the correct modloader, Minecraft version, or launcher profile. Bedrock does not run Java mod files at all. It uses add-ons, which are activated inside a world’s settings or obtained through Marketplace. Identify your edition first, then follow the matching path below.
Check which edition you are running
Minecraft ships as two separate games with different modding systems. Minecraft’s current edition guide lists Java Edition for Windows, macOS, and Linux, and Bedrock Edition for Windows, consoles, and mobile devices. On Windows, you may have both editions installed, so check which one your launcher starts before troubleshooting anything.

People use “mod” and “add-on” interchangeably online, and that is where much of the confusion starts. A Java mod will never appear in a Bedrock world, and a Bedrock add-on will never load in a Java profile.
If you are using Java Edition
Java mods depend on three things lining up: the game edition, the exact Minecraft version, and the modloader. Fabric’s player installation guide, checked on 8 October 2026, describes this manual workflow:

- Download the mod from a source you trust.
- Confirm the mod is built for Java Edition, your Minecraft version, and Fabric. A mod built for a different loader is not interchangeable.
- Check whether the mod requires Fabric API. Fabric states that most mods do, so install it too if the mod’s requirements list it.
- Place the
.jarfile in themodsfolder for your operating system (see the table below). - In Minecraft Launcher, select the Fabric profile, not the vanilla profile, and press Play.

These paths are the ones Fabric documents for a manual Fabric install. Other loaders and launchers have their own folder structures and setup steps, so follow the documentation for the loader you installed.
Checking compatibility before you install
- The mod’s listed Minecraft version matches the version your Fabric profile runs.
- The mod targets the same loader you installed (Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, or Quilt). Mods for one loader do not load under another.
- Required dependencies, such as Fabric API, are present in the
modsfolder. - The file came from a source you trust, and the specific version you downloaded is the one you intended to use.
Compatibility varies by game version and loader, so a mod that worked on one release may not work on the latest one. No single download guarantees it runs on your setup.

Why a mod does not appear or launch
- You launched vanilla Minecraft instead of the loader profile.
- The mod was built for a different Minecraft version.
- The mod was built for a different loader than the one you installed.
- A required dependency, such as Fabric API, is missing.
- The file was placed in a different game or profile folder than the one the profile uses.
- Two or more mods conflict, or the game crashes on launch.
Isolating crashes and conflicts
If the game starts but crashes, or a mod causes errors, work through the problem methodically. Remove all mods except one, launch, and confirm the game runs. Then add the remaining mods one at a time, testing after each addition. When a crash happens, read the loader’s crash report and log files, which Fabric’s documentation points to for troubleshooting. This narrows the problem to the specific mod or dependency causing it.
If you are using Bedrock Edition
Java .jar mods and modloaders are not part of the Bedrock installation path. Bedrock uses add-ons, which you activate from within a world. Minecraft’s support instructions cover two situations.

Adding an add-on to an existing world
- Open Minecraft and select Play.
- Select the pencil icon on the world you want to change.
- Open Resource Packs or Behavior Packs, depending on the add-on type.
- Activate the add-on you want under Available.
- Start the world and play.
Adding an add-on to a new world
- Select Marketplace content, or select Create New World.
- Choose Resource Packs or Behavior Packs, depending on the add-on type.
- Activate an available add-on.
- Create the world.
Marketplace add-ons work on Bedrock devices. On a Realm, activated add-ons can be distributed to Bedrock devices that join it.
When a Bedrock add-on misbehaves
- Update Minecraft to the latest version available on your device.
- Disable add-ons, especially when several are enabled at once, since they may conflict with each other.
- Create a new world and test the add-on there, to see whether the add-on itself is the source of the problem.
Consoles and file imports
On Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch, the documented route is Marketplace content and add-ons. Minecraft’s official help pages reviewed for this article do not describe importing external files on consoles, so do not expect the Java file-folder method to apply there.

Why Minecraft Support will not troubleshoot mods
Java modding is outside the support Minecraft provides. Minecraft Help’s official notice states: “As modding is not officially supported, Minecraft Support cannot assist with issues arising from mod usage.” When a problem traces back to a mod, the modloader’s documentation and the mod’s own page are the more useful places to look.
Source trust matters for the same reason. Fabric’s player installation guide advises: “You should only download mods from sources you trust.” Download only from sources you have a reason to trust, and verify the specific file, not just the site.

Its getting-started support page, last modified 4 December 2025, describes automatic profile setup and compatibility checks for Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, and Quilt. Its compatibility checks do not replace checking the mod’s Minecraft version and loader yourself.
