Your stream can miss in-game chat because voice audio may travel through a different route from game audio. It might be sent to your headset instead of the HDMI connection feeding a capture card, excluded by a console broadcast setting, or received by the capture device but left out of the streaming software’s mix. First identify whether the missing sound is your microphone, game audio, other players’ in-game chat, or platform party chat; the right fix depends on which one is missing and how you stream.
First identify which audio is missing
“In-game chat” can mean voice chat inside a game, while party chat is handled by the console platform. Your microphone, game sound, game or lobby voice chat, and platform party chat may all have separate controls and routes.
- You cannot hear other players locally: Check the game’s voice settings, selected channel, mute or block settings, and console voice-chat setup first.
- You hear them, but the stream does not: Check whether their voice is routed to HDMI or another input the capture device can receive, then verify that the source is included in the stream mix.
- Your voice or game sounds are missing too: Check their separate microphone and game-audio inputs rather than assuming the chat fix will solve them.
Check the game’s chat settings and channel
Games can have their own voice-chat enablement, channel membership, voice volume, and mute or block controls. Confirm you and the other players are in the intended channel and that voice chat is enabled in the game. A platform party is not necessarily the same channel as the game’s Fireteam, lobby, or cross-platform chat.
For example, Bungie’s Destiny 2 cross-play guide advises checking voice-chat enablement, channel selection, blocked players, and resetting settings when troubleshooting its cross-platform voice chat. It also distinguishes Fireteam chat volume from platform Party Chat, which is controlled in console settings. Those steps describe Destiny 2; other games may use different controls.

Check the console’s audio route and broadcast controls
If the other players are audible in your headset but absent from the stream, find out where the console sends their voices. A capture card connected by HDMI can only capture chat that reaches its input; voice sent only to a headset or controller output may never reach it.
PS5 native Broadcast
On PS5, open Settings > Captures and Broadcasts > Broadcasts and review the audio choices for microphone and party audio. PlayStation describes this setting as: “Choose whether to include microphone audio and party audio in your broadcast.” The setting addresses those audio categories in a native broadcast; it does not establish that every game’s voice channel or every capture-card setup will be included. Let party members know if their voices will be broadcast. PlayStation notes that they can adjust their own settings and device if they want their voices shared. See PlayStation’s PS5 broadcast instructions.

PS5 voice-chat routing
For voice-path problems, PlayStation recommends checking Settings > Sound > Audio Output > Output Device and Output to Headphones, as well as Settings > Sound > Microphone for the input device and microphone level. In Game Base, use the voice-chat card dropdown to switch between party chat and game chat and adjust voice/game balance. These controls help determine which channel you are hearing and where audio is sent; the specific route still depends on your headset and capture setup. Refer to PlayStation’s PS5 audio-output guidance.
PS4 headset and HDMI limitation
PlayStation’s PS4 voice-chat troubleshooting page says that, due to PS4 specifications, voice chat and game audio cannot output to both a headset and TV at the same time. If a headset is connected to the controller, do not assume its chat audio is also reaching the HDMI output that feeds your capture card.

Xbox party chat versus game or lobby chat
For party chat in an Xbox capture-card setup, Elgato’s guidance, updated June 1, 2026, says to choose Settings > General > Volume & Audio Output > Party Chat Output > Headset & Speakers. That sends party chat to both the headset and HDMI, so a connected capture card can receive it. This setting does not route Game Chat or Lobby Chat to HDMI: Elgato states, “At this time, the Xbox console only sends Game Chat or Lobby Chat to the connected headset.” See Elgato’s Xbox chat guidance.
Elgato describes Chat Link as a capture path for Game Chat or Lobby Chat when using a wired headset without a mix-amp or similar audio output, such as a Stream Port. Check that your exact headset and capture device support the required connection before relying on this route.

Check whether the capture device receives chat audio
Once the console is set to send audio along a route your hardware can capture, confirm the capture device receives it before changing more settings. A manufacturer-specific example from AVerMedia for the GC553G2 uses a headset plugged into the capture card’s headset socket and a 3.5 mm AUX cable between the controller and the card’s controller socket. Its instructions specify PS5 output set to Controller Headset, Xbox Party Chat Output set to Headset & Speakers, and the device selected as an Audio Input Capture source in OBS Studio. Unmute that source and raise its level. These are device-specific instructions, not a universal wiring diagram.
In Streamlabs, play audio and watch the capture-device meter in the Mixer. Its capture-card setup guide describes enabling Audio Monitoring on the capture source and selecting Monitor and Output for its example setup. A meter that does not move points first to the selected source or the console/device route. If it moves but viewers still cannot hear chat, check whether the source is muted and whether it is included in the stream’s output mix or track. Monitoring controls local playback; hearing audio through monitoring alone does not prove it is included in the encoded stream.

When a Chat Link cable may help
Consider an analog Chat Link route only after confirming that chat audio is present at a compatible wired headset/controller output but absent from the capture device. Streamlabs documents a PS4 setup with a headset connected to the controller; Elgato describes using Chat Link for Xbox Game Chat or Lobby Chat when the headset lacks a mix-amp or Stream Port. It is a conditional hardware path, not a general remedy for all consoles, games, wireless headsets, or capture cards. Before buying, verify connector compatibility and that the capture device accepts the needed analog signal.
Choose the fix that matches your setup
| What you are streaming | Chat type | Likely route to check |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 native Broadcast | Microphone or platform party chat | Broadcast audio choices; party members’ sharing settings |
| PS5 or Xbox through a capture card | Audio sent to HDMI | Console output settings, capture-device input, and streaming-software mix |
| Xbox through a capture card | Platform party chat | Party Chat Output set to Headset & Speakers, per Elgato’s June 1, 2026 guidance |
| Xbox through a capture card | Game Chat or Lobby Chat | Xbox sends these to the connected headset, not HDMI, per Elgato’s June 1, 2026 guidance; check whether a compatible wired Chat Link route applies |
| Any capture-card setup | Audio reaches hardware but not stream | Selected and unmuted source, input level, and stream output/track configuration |
Menu labels and audio behavior can change with firmware, game updates, and devices. Use the platform or device instructions that match your exact model and connection, and distinguish platform party chat from the game’s own voice channel before changing settings or buying an accessory.
