Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf Batman: Arkham Origins crashes or refuses to open on your PC, the most likely causes are outdated video or sound drivers, pending Windows or DirectX updates, overclocking, damaged game files, demanding graphics settings, or background software. WB Games Support states that when the game is crashing on a PC, “it’s typically due to a few common causes.” Its official checks address those causes, so work through them in order before trying the older community workarounds at the end of the list.

- Your Windows version, from Settings > System > About.
- Your graphics card model and driver version, which you can read from your GPU control panel or Device Manager.
- Whether the game is still running after the screen goes black or freezes. Open Task Manager and check for the game’s process. A process that keeps running behind a black screen points to a display problem, while a process that disappears points to a crash.
- The exact point of failure, such as no window at all, a black screen, a crash at the “press enter” screen, or a crash after gameplay has started.

Eight fixes, in the order to try them
Fixes 1 through 6 come from WB Games Support’s PC troubleshooting article. Fixes 7 and 8 come from Steam community threads posted in 2014, more than a decade ago, and are user reports rather than official guidance. Try one change at a time so you know which one, if any, made a difference.
1. Update your video and sound drivers
Install drivers from the manufacturer’s own driver page, meaning your graphics card maker (NVIDIA or AMD) or the maker of your computer or sound component. WB Games’ guidance points to manufacturer pages rather than third-party driver utilities, and AMD and NVIDIA both offer automatic GPU driver tools on their own sites. Use the official download for your exact card model. Reboot after installing, then test the game again.

2. Install pending Windows and DirectX updates
WB Games says DirectX is updated through Windows Update. Open Windows Update (Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update on Windows 10, or Settings > Windows Update on Windows 11), select Check for updates, install everything offered, and restart. A current DirectX runtime removes one possible cause, but it does not guarantee that a crash will stop, so continue with the other steps if the game still fails.
3. Return overclocked parts to manufacturer settings
WB Games recommends restoring overclocked or turbo-boosted components, such as the video card, to manufacturer specifications, because this may prevent crashes. Use your GPU vendor’s utility or BIOS settings to disable the overclock profile, then test the game. Treat this as a temporary diagnostic: if the game runs stably at stock speeds, you can decide later whether to reapply an overclock.

4. Verify the game files through Steam
Verification compares the installed game with Steam’s copy and replaces missing or damaged files. Do this before any manual file changes.
- Open your Steam Library.
- Right-click Batman: Arkham Origins and choose Properties.
- Open the Local Files tab.
- Select Verify Integrity of Game Files and wait for Steam to finish.
Reinstall only if verification and the simpler steps do not resolve the problem. WB Games’ support article also includes uninstall and reinstall instructions.

5. Lower graphics settings
WB Games notes that high settings add workload to the hardware even on PCs that exceed the minimum requirements, and recommends lowering graphics-related options when performance or stability is affected. Start with the most demanding options, such as resolution, texture quality, shadows, and anti-aliasing, and change one at a time. Restart the game after each change so you can see which setting, if any, stops the crash.
6. Close other applications and try a temporary clean boot
WB Games recommends closing unnecessary programs, including screen recorders, overlays, and background utilities. If your antivirus has a gaming mode, enable it. If simpler steps fail, a clean boot can help isolate a software conflict. Follow Microsoft’s clean boot instructions carefully, test the game, and then restore normal startup. Leaving a clean boot in place is a diagnostic mistake, not a fix.
7. For black screens, try Alt+Enter or the -d3d9 launch option
A 2014 Steam community reply for a “Black screen, game won’t start” thread suggested two options. The first is pressing Alt+Enter to toggle between fullscreen and windowed mode. The second is adding -d3d9 to the game’s Steam launch options, which asks the game to use DirectX 9. One commenter said the launch option fixed their case, but these are individual anecdotes, and the thread does not establish that they work for other PCs.

8. For crashes at the “press enter” screen, check configuration files only as a last resort
Two 2014 Steam threads describe configuration-file changes for startup crashes. One suggests replacing the user copy of BMENGINE.INI with the copy from the game folder, and replies reported mixed results. Another says to confirm that defaultinput.ini exists and to move BMENGINE.INI out of the configuration folder. One commenter also suggested setting HardwarePhysX=0 for ATI graphics. That suggestion is hardware-specific and unverified, so do not apply it unless you have confirmed that it matches your card and symptom.
Before editing anything, copy every file you plan to change to a backup folder. Rename files rather than deleting them, and restore the originals if the game does not improve. Do not present these community steps as universal.

| Symptom | Start with | Caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Game does not open or start | Fixes 1, 2, and 4 | Drivers, Windows updates, and file verification are the official first checks; no community workaround is listed for this symptom. |
| Black screen with the game still running in Task Manager | Fix 7 (Alt+Enter, then -d3d9) |
Both options come from 2014 user reports, not official guidance. |
| Crash at the “press enter” screen | Fixes 1, 4, and 6, then fix 8 if the crash persists | Configuration-file changes had mixed replies and carry the highest risk of losing settings. |
| Crash after gameplay has started | Fixes 3 and 5 | Overclocks and high settings are the official explanations WB Games gives for this pattern. |
What the requirements and sources do and do not establish
Steam’s listing gives the game’s original system requirements. These describe an older release and are not a guarantee that the game will run on your current hardware or Windows version. Use them to confirm that your PC is in the right range, not to decide that a crash is impossible.

That client policy is separate from the game’s original requirement list, and the listing does not address current Windows versions.
WB Games’ support article is the authoritative source for the general troubleshooting steps above. The two Steam community threads are useful for matching a precise symptom, but they are more than a decade old, were written by users rather than the publisher, and do not establish a single cause for all crashes. No statistic on crash frequency or fix success has been published for this game in the sources reviewed, so no success rate is claimed here.
