Most “can’t buy Minecraft” problems come from one of three things: the storefront does not match your device, the Microsoft account signed in does not own the edition you are looking at, or the payment fails at checkout. Work through them in that order. Each one has a different fix, and only the last involves your bank or payment method.
Start with the edition and store for your device
Minecraft is sold through different storefronts depending on the platform, and the editions are not interchangeable. Minecraft Help lists Java and Bedrock as a single PC bundle, released on June 7, 2022, and sells console and mobile versions through each platform’s own store. A separate edition, Minecraft: China Version, is listed by Minecraft Help as available only in China.

| PC (Windows) | Bedrock Edition (in the PC bundle) | Microsoft Store, with ownership shown in the launcher | Ownership is tied to the signed-in Microsoft account. See the next section. |
| Xbox | Bedrock Edition | Xbox or Microsoft Store | A Microsoft account is required to buy here. |
| Nintendo Switch | Bedrock Edition | Nintendo’s website or eShop | Purchase follows Nintendo’s platform terms. |

If the device you are buying for is not in this table, Minecraft Help’s edition guide is the authority. Store catalogs and regional listings can change, so confirm the current route on the official Minecraft pages before paying.
On PC, “Buy” can mean the wrong account is signed in
If the game page or launcher says “Buy” even though you paid earlier, the problem is usually the account, not the purchase. On PC, the launcher and Microsoft Store show Play, Install, or “You Own This” for editions the signed-in Microsoft account owns. They show Buy for editions that account does not own.
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
- Open your purchase confirmation email or Microsoft order history and note the account address used for the order.
- Sign out of the launcher or Microsoft Store and sign in with that exact account.
- If the owned state still does not appear, check that you bought the edition you are looking at. A Bedrock purchase does not change the Java listing, and the reverse is also true.
Checkout fails or shows an error
A declined payment or a checkout error is a payment-path problem, and it can be fixed without changing the edition. Minecraft Help’s transaction troubleshooting article recommends the following sequence:
- Clear your browser’s browsing data, or switch to another updated browser or device, and retry the purchase through the official store.
- Try a different valid payment method. Minecraft Help notes that “Valid payment methods may vary depending on your country or region.”
- Contact your bank and confirm that online transactions are allowed for the merchant and your region.
- Check whether a charge actually went through before you buy again. A bank authorization that is interrupted can leave the store without a confirmation, even though money has been held.
- If you cannot use a card or bank payment, look for a Minecraft prepaid card. Minecraft Help says these may be sold at retail stores and redeemed in the Microsoft Store before you buy. Availability depends on your region, and the sources consulted did not confirm specific denominations or retailers.
An old Mojang account will not restore access on its own
If you expected a legacy Mojang account to carry your purchase into a Microsoft account, be aware that the migration window has closed. Minecraft Help states: “The migration process for Mojang accounts officially ended as of December 18, 2023.” It also says Minecraft Support no longer assists with migration queries. A past Mojang login is therefore not proof of current access, and you will need to resolve ownership through the Microsoft account that holds the purchase record.

Microsoft account requirements depend on where you buy
Minecraft’s end-user license agreement ties some purchases to a Microsoft account. The EULA states: “For the Microsoft platforms (including our website, Microsoft Store and Xbox), we use Microsoft accounts for our games and a Microsoft account is required to purchase our games or a Minecraft Realms subscription through our website, the Microsoft Store, or Xbox.” Purchases made through Nintendo, PlayStation, Apple, Google Play, or Steam are governed by those platforms’ own terms instead, so the account rules you see on a Microsoft page do not apply there.
Trying the game before you buy
If the goal is to test the game rather than buy it immediately, Minecraft offers a free trial on listed PC, PlayStation, and Android platforms. The official trial page describes the core Survival experience and gives an approximate limit of 100 minutes of in-game time. That figure is from an undated official page, and the page says it may vary slightly by device. Online multiplayer servers are not available during the trial, though LAN play is allowed.

Choosing an edition if you can buy more than one
- Device support: Java runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux. Bedrock runs on Windows, consoles, and mobile devices.
- Who you play with: Java and Bedrock use separate multiplayer ecosystems. Ask friends which edition they use before buying, because a purchase in one does not let you join the other’s servers.
- Which account owns it: On PC, check ownership in the Microsoft account that made the purchase, not the one you happen to be signed into.
- How you pay: Direct store payment depends on the payment methods your country or region accepts. A prepaid card is a fallback only where it is sold.
What these sources cannot determine
Diagnosing an exact error requires details that a general guide cannot supply: your device and platform, your country or region, the store you tried, the Microsoft account’s ownership status, and the exact error message. The official sources also do not say whether a particular store outage or local legal restriction is affecting purchases in your area. Check the platform store’s support path for those specifics. The sources do not publish failure rates or market figures for checkout problems, so this guide does not estimate how often they occur.
