Roblox removed its familiar “oof” death sound in July 2022, saying a licensing issue was the reason. It returned as Roblox’s default death sound on July 31, 2025, although the exact terms behind the removal and return have not been publicly explained in the cited announcements.
Why Roblox removed the “oof” sound
In July 2022, Roblox said it had removed the sound because of a “licensing issue” and introduced a replacement default sound. That is the reason Roblox gave publicly; the announcement did not specify a lawsuit outcome, royalty dispute, contract clause, or other legal detail. PCGamesN reported Roblox’s statement at the time.

How the licensing dispute developed
Roblox’s account of the original sounds
In January 2020, Roblox responded to public claims about who owned the sound. The company said its founders had obtained the original Roblox sounds from a stock sound CD-ROM they purchased, which Roblox described as containing licensed, copyright-free sounds. That is Roblox’s account, not an independent legal ruling or a definitive resolution of authorship and rights. Roblox’s 2020 response records its position.
The Tallarico sound kit
Also in 2020, Roblox announced a sound-design kit from Tommy Tallarico that included the “Oof!” sound and discussed replacing the platform’s game-over effect. A later update in the same discussion said removal would be postponed so the Developer Marketplace could become available and creators could update their sounds. These posts provide context for the licensing and creator-marketplace discussions, but do not establish the complete rights history or contract terms. Roblox’s kit announcement and updates.

Did Roblox bring the sound back?
Yes. On July 31, 2025, Roblox announced that the original OOF was returning as the default death sound. Roblox said desktop and console users would hear it after updating, while mobile updates would roll out over the following days. Roblox’s return announcement describes the rollout.
Why some experiences may sound different
The restored sound is the default, not a guarantee that every experience will use it. An experience that explicitly customizes or scripts its death sound can behave differently. The 2025 announcement also tied availability to client updates, so players could hear the change at different times depending on platform and update status.

Who owns the Roblox “oof” sound?
The cited public announcements do not establish a definitive authorship or ownership conclusion. Roblox’s 2020 post states the company’s view of how the original sounds were sourced, and its 2022 and 2025 announcements give the stated removal reason and confirm the return. They do not disclose the full licensing arrangement or explain what changed between removal and restoration. Roblox’s Creator Store lists an “oof!” audio asset, but the listing alone does not resolve the sound’s broader rights history.
