The best aquarium game on Steam depends on what you want to do with the tank: build and run an aquarium business, manage a simulated freshwater ecosystem, collect fish over time, or simply keep a peaceful aquarium on screen. Aquarist is the clearest fit for design and business progression; Fish Game emphasizes fishkeeping systems; Chillquarium and ARC Aquarium focus on idle collecting; and Zen Aquarium is oriented toward ambient viewing. Which Steam aquarium game should you choose?
Choose Aquarist for aquarium design with business progression
Aquarist combines building and decorating tanks with managing a business. Steam describes freshwater and saltwater aquariums, aquatic-animal care, customer jobs, an aquarium shop, and growth toward a larger oceanarium. That blend makes it the strongest match here if you want creative construction to feed into a progression loop rather than remain a display project. Steam lists FreeMind S.A. as developer and FreeMind S.A. and PlayWay S.A. as publishers; it released March 29, 2024.

Fish Game is the systems-oriented pick. Its Steam description features fish with distinct behaviors and relationships, aquatic plants, sculptable substrate, and modeled carbon dioxide, ammonia, and oxygen. It also offers a no-death mode for a more relaxed display tank and says it is playable on Steam Deck. The developer listing names A Shell in the Pit Games and Creative Ink Games; A Shell in the Pit Games is the publisher. It released October 26, 2023.

The developer’s store description claims “over 130 types of Fish,” “50 species” of propagating aquatic plants, and 11 food types. Those are listed feature counts, not independent audits or proof that the game is a guide to real aquarium husbandry.
Choose Chillquarium for gradual, idle collecting
Chillquarium centers on buying fish, raising them in real time, then selling them or keeping them to earn tickets. Steam also highlights rare color variants and tank customization, and its description lists 156 unique fish. The gradual collection loop makes it a better fit for passive progression than for detailed ecosystem management. Ben Reber is listed as developer and publisher; the game released September 6, 2023.

Choose ARC Aquarium for breeding and catalog completion
ARC Aquarium has an idle collection loop built around fish arriving as eggs, hatching, growing, and being sold or bred. ACA Games’ Steam description says its catalog covers 250 freshwater and saltwater species. It released January 30, 2026, and ACA Games is listed as developer and publisher. Its 92% Positive snapshot came from 13 reviews on October 8, 2026, so treat that label as early, limited feedback rather than a broad consensus.
Choose Zen Aquarium for a quiet tank on screen
Zen Aquarium is the least management-focused choice. Steam describes an idle experience inspired by classic aquarium screensavers, with soothing visuals and ambient sounds. It suits a player who wants a calm aquarium atmosphere more than a fish-care system or business simulator. Astro Cat is listed as developer and publisher; the release date is September 25, 2025.

Consider Fish Simulator: Aquarium Manager for resource management
Fish Simulator: Aquarium Manager emphasizes balancing resources alongside tank customization, fish care, species collecting, and breeding. DuoBonza is listed on Steam, and the game released February 10, 2020. Its October 8, 2026 snapshot was Mixed, at 58% of 24 reviews, so it is an alternative to investigate rather than a top consensus pick.

- For creative construction: Start with Aquarist if you want to arrange tanks and expand a business; consider Fish Game if shaping substrate and tending a freshwater setup matter more.
- For fishkeeping mechanics: Fish Game is the listing that most explicitly describes water-quality variables and fish relationships. These are game mechanics, not a real-world care reference.
- For gradual collection: Chillquarium is built around real-time growth and keeping or selling fish; ARC Aquarium adds breeding and a catalog-completion goal.
- For minimal interaction: Zen Aquarium is presented as an ambient idle experience rather than a detailed management game.
- For business or resource decisions: Aquarist ties tanks to jobs and shop expansion; Fish Simulator: Aquarium Manager highlights resource balancing, but its listed review summary is Mixed.
