Sunfish is caught in a river in Pelican Town or Cindersap Forest during Spring or Summer, in sunny weather, between 6am and 7pm. The Stardew Valley Wiki’s Sunfish page also lists the river on Riverlands Farm, Forest Farm, and Hill-top Farm as possible spots. Magic Bait removes the usual time, weather, and season limits. The fish feels elusive mainly because its window is narrow, not because it is hard to find once you are in the right conditions.
Where Sunfish appears
The Stardew Valley Wiki’s Sunfish entry names rivers as the catch locations. The mountain lake is not on that list, so if you have been fishing there without a bite, move to a river instead.

- Pelican Town: the river in the town’s map area.
- Cindersap Forest: the river in the forest map area.
- Riverlands Farm, Forest Farm, and Hill-top Farm: listed on the wiki as possible locations, each with a river on the farm map.
The time, season, and weather window
Outside Magic Bait, all three conditions must be met at the same moment. The table below separates the standard requirements from what Magic Bait changes. The wiki’s entry describes Magic Bait as removing the time, weather, and season restrictions. It does not describe any change to the water locations.

Rain does not make Sunfish catchable under normal conditions. A rainy day in Spring or Summer does not meet the sunny requirement, and only Magic Bait lifts it.

Exceptions that can explain an unexpected catch
Magic Bait
Magic Bait allows Sunfish to be caught regardless of the usual time, weather, or season. It is the only documented way to catch the fish outside its normal window.
The tutorial catch
The tutorial catch can substitute Sunfish for an ineligible fish or non-fish item regardless of conditions. If you pulled a Sunfish from a spot or time that should not produce one, this is the most likely explanation.

Fishing mechanics that affect your chances
Once a fish bites, keep the fish icon inside the green bar until the progress meter fills. Fishing outcomes in general depend on season, weather, body of water, and time of day, so the same spot can give different results at different hours.
The Sunfish entry lists a fishing difficulty of 30. This is an in-game reference value, not a real-world statistic. The wiki does not establish that a specific rod is required to catch Sunfish, so any rod you have should be enough as far as the entry is concerned.

The River Fish Bundle
Sunfish is one of the items needed for the River Fish Bundle in the Community Center’s Fish Tank. Catching it within its normal window early in Spring or Summer lets you plan that bundle without waiting for Magic Bait.

- Fish Pond stock

- Stand at a river in Pelican Town, Cindersap Forest, or a farm river on Riverlands, Forest, or Hill-top Farm.
- Confirm it is Spring or Summer, sunny, and between 6am and 7pm.
- If conditions are wrong and you still want Sunfish, use Magic Bait.
- Keep the fish icon in the green bar until the progress meter fills.
