1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor most players, start on Stalker, the difficulty the game is built around. Choose Rookie if you want a gentler learning curve, Veteran if you already handle demanding shooters comfortably, and Master only if you want a deliberately severe run. Expedition and Custom Rules are separate levers: Expedition changes how you can save, and Custom Rules, added in Update 2.0, lets you tune fights and the economy independently.
How the difficulty options fit together
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 offers a ladder of four presets (Rookie, Stalker, Veteran and Master), plus two modifiers that sit alongside them: Expedition and Custom Rules. The presets scale overall challenge, while the modifiers change specific kinds of pressure. Keep the two ideas separate when you choose, because a harder preset does not automatically mean harsher saving or a tougher economy.

The placement of Rookie, Stalker and Veteran below is our own recommendation based on how the game names and describes its ladder. GSC Game World describes Master in detail, but the official pages we checked do not publish numeric modifiers for each preset, so we avoid percentages. Your in-game settings screen shows the exact options available in your build.
Stalker: the intended survival pressure
Stalker is the choice for a first run if you want the survival pressure the game is designed around. It is the sensible default for players who want enemies, anomalies and resource management to matter without the severity reserved for Master.
#1 Best Overall
Rookie: a more forgiving learning curve
Rookie suits someone who wants to learn the shooting, the anomalies and the map before the survival systems start to bite. It is also a reasonable choice if you mainly want to experience the story and world, since it lowers the friction that can otherwise slow exploration.
Veteran: tougher play for confident shooters
Veteran is for players who already handle difficult shooters comfortably and want more resistance than Stalker provides. It sits above Stalker in our ordering, but it is not the top of the ladder. If your goal is the most severe experience, that is Master.
Master: a challenge for the most experienced stalkers
GSC introduced Master in its Update 1.7 Expedition showcase, published November 17, 2025, and described it in these words: “We’ve introduced a new difficulty level, Master Difficulty, to the game – a true challenge for the most experienced stalkers.” According to the same description, Master makes:
Rank #2
- Battle against over 50 players simultaneously in a massive multiplayer playground—over 20 players on Xbox One.
- Compete in an all-out mass start race—collide, grind, and fight your way to the finish
- Customize your character to show off your style to your friends or show up the competition.
- Bike, ski, snowboard, or wingsuit through a seamless open world in Career mode or multiplayer events.
- Go wild on the heights of iconic US national parks like Yosemite, Zion, and Bryce Canyon.
- NPCs and mutants much deadlier;
- anomalies potentially lethal;
- radiation, hunger, sleepiness and other effects more painful;
- resources scarcer, equipment less durable and traders less favorable.
Choose Master only if you want that combination and are prepared to accept a run that punishes mistakes heavily. Master also carries the save restriction described in the sections below.

Expedition is not a combat difficulty in its own right. GSC described it as keeping the Master-style progress-save system while allowing other difficulty levels to be paired with it. That makes it the way to add save pressure without committing to Master’s full level of danger.
The Expedition showcase, also dated November 17, 2025, said that Master and Expedition required starting a new campaign and could not be activated or deactivated from campaign settings. Read that as the rule at the time of Update 1.7. The later manual-save change described below modifies one part of it.

Custom Rules: tune the pressure yourself
Update 2.0, announced August 14, 2026, introduced the Custom Rules difficulty. GSC’s announcement reads: “With this update, we’re introducing a ‘Custom Rules’ difficulty — tune the settings yourself to craft your ideal experience.” The official site says it arrived alongside the Cost of Hope expansion on August 20, 2026.
The clearest use case in GSC’s framing is a player who wants harder fights but a less punishing economy, or who finds one survival system harder than another. Custom Rules is the right choice if a single preset feels too uniform for the way you play. The official sources do not list every adjustable setting, so check the Custom Rules screen to see what your build lets you change.
Manual saves on Master and Expedition
A later patch-notes entry for Stories Untold, linked below, added an option to enable manual saves after starting a game on Master or on a difficulty with Expedition enabled. The notes say the choice is one-time and permanent for that playthrough, so it cannot be reversed mid-run.
This matters if you read the 2025 rule as current. If you start a Master or Expedition run, decide early whether you want the restricted save system or manual saves, because enabling manual saves is a commitment for that playthrough.

The table below groups each option by the three kinds of pressure GSC’s descriptions point to. Cells marked “not stated” mean GSC’s official pages we checked do not describe that setting for the option.
| Option | Combat and survival pressure | Economy and equipment | Save behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rookie | Lowest placement on the ladder (our ordering); exact values not stated | Not stated | Not stated |
| Stalker | Intended survival pressure (our recommendation); exact values not stated | Not stated | Not stated |
| Veteran | Tougher than Stalker (our ordering); exact values not stated | Not stated | Not stated |
| Master | Much deadlier NPCs and mutants; anomalies potentially lethal; more painful radiation, hunger and sleepiness | Fewer resources, less durable equipment, less favorable traders | Restricted progress saving; manual saves can be enabled later for that playthrough |
| Expedition (modifier) | Set by the difficulty you pair it with | Set by the difficulty you pair it with | Master-style progress saving, with other difficulty levels allowed |
| Custom Rules | Tuned by you (for example, harder fights) | Tuned by you (for example, a less punishing economy) | Not stated |
Can you change difficulty mid-campaign?
The official material we checked confirms the restriction for Master and Expedition at the time of Update 1.7: they are chosen when you start a new campaign. The sources do not give a full, current policy for switching ordinary presets during a campaign, so do not assume you can change them freely. Check the campaign settings in your build before relying on a switch.

Quick Recap
Choosing your difficulty step by step
- Decide whether you want standard survival pressure (Stalker), a gentler start (Rookie) or more resistance (Veteran).
- If you want severe combat, economy and survival pressure, consider Master, and accept that it is designed for experienced stalkers.
- If you want restricted saving without the full Master experience, pair Expedition with another difficulty level when you start the campaign.
- If one kind of pressure is the problem, use Custom Rules from Update 2.0 to adjust fights or the economy separately.
- If you start a Master or Expedition run, decide early whether to enable manual saves, since that choice is permanent for the playthrough.
