Locating the Ruined Homestead on the Blue Gate map
Open the Blue Gate interactive map and look at its southern section beside Olive Grove. The Ruined Homestead is a smaller, easy-to-miss location rather than a large marker, so if the label does not show at your current zoom level, zoom in before you search. Olive Grove is the reference point to navigate from: the homestead sits right beside it.
Guides published in 2026 describe the location in the same way, and the Blue Gate map lists both Olive Grove and Ruined Homestead as named locations. No exact grid coordinate or compass bearing has been published in the sources available at the time of writing, so the Olive Grove landmark is the most reliable way to orient yourself.
Getting the in-game camera before you deploy
The photo step cannot be finished by standing at the homestead alone. You need the in-game camera on you before you deploy. PC Gamer’s guide lists three routes to obtain it:

Which route is fastest depends on your save. If you already have the currency, buying from Shani is the simplest option. If you have been collecting Plastic Parts and Wire, crafting avoids the cost. Sources do not establish which route is quickest for every player, and the prices and recipe may change with updates.
Completing the Sheltered Retreat photo objective
The objective belongs to the Sheltered Retreat Project and asks you to photograph a farmland house in the Ruined Homestead area. Equip the camera, aim at a main farm building, and take the photo using the camera controls shown in the game.
You do not need to hunt for one uniquely named house. A current guide reports that any of the main farm buildings around the homestead should count, so photograph whichever main building is easiest to frame.
Troubleshooting if the photo does not register
- Confirm the camera is in your inventory before you deploy. A photo taken without it cannot complete the step.
- Check that the subject is a main farm building rather than a fence, shed, or outbuilding.
- Recheck the objective wording in your quest log. If a patch has changed the Sheltered Retreat Project, the wording in your log is the authority.
What is and is not established
The location, the Olive Grove landmark, the camera routes, and the farm-building rule come from secondary gaming guides and the interactive Blue Gate map. No official documentation from Embark Studios was found covering this objective. Exact coordinates, whether every camera variant behaves the same, and whether these details survive future updates are not established. If the map or objective wording changes, use the current in-game information over this guide.

Players search for this location using simple phrasing such as “Where are the ruined homestead?”, and the answer remains the same: it is in the southern part of Blue Gate beside Olive Grove.
