The Road of Dust and Sorrow is scheduled to launch on December 3, 2026, according to its developer, Painted Black Games. The developer’s Steam Community announcement is titled “The Road of Dust and Sorrow Launches December 3, 2026!” It states that the game “will officially launch on 3rd of December this year.” The post is dated October 2026 and is the source of the date. A date set months in advance can move. Developers commonly shift launch dates after announcement when a game needs more testing, when a platform certification takes longer than planned, or when a storefront review is delayed. The same sources do not state regional availability, pricing, preorder status, or whether a physical edition will exist. What kind of game it is
The developer describes The Road of Dust and Sorrow as a story-driven, pixel-art survival-horror game inspired by 1990s classics. Its demo announcement names Resident Evil and Silent Hill as reference points. These are the developer’s own descriptions of intent, not independent reviews, so they indicate tone and style rather than how the finished game plays.

Premise
According to the developer’s demo announcement, a cure intended to end famine turned out to be a failed experiment that transformed people into feral creatures called Dusters. Katherine and her daughter Ava travel through the remnants of civilization looking for a safer future. A Preacher and his cult become a second threat. The developer’s own line, quoted from the game description, sums up the emotional core: “Protect Ava at all cost. The world can die but she must live.”
Gameplay as described
The official description lists story-driven linear gameplay, dystopian survival, exploration and puzzles, and pixel art. The announcement also mentions abandoned streets, decaying buildings, environmental puzzles, hidden paths, and encounters that can be either fought or avoided. The developer has not published details on combat systems, save structure, or length in the material available, so those points are open until the store page or a playable build covers them.

Wishlists, demo, and events
The developer reports that the game reached 150,000 wishlists at the time of the release-date announcement. This is the developer’s own figure; it has not been independently verified, and it reflects wishlists on Steam rather than sales.
A demo is already available. The developer’s Steam news post is titled “The Road Of Dust And Sorrow Demo OUT NOW.” The release-date announcement says a new demo version is coming soon, but gives no date for it, so check the Steam page for the updated build.

The announcement also lists appearances at the Harvest of Terror: A Horror Game Award Halloween Showcase and the Convergence Games Showcase. It says the game was scheduled to appear at Cozy After Dark on October 12, 2026. These are dated items from the developer’s announcement; check the event organizers’ schedules for current timing.
