Volatiles pairs wave-based action combat with a map you build as you play: each cleared wave earns a new tile, and every placement can change both your character and the shape of the next fight. What is Volatiles?
Volatiles is an action game built around roguelike runs. The protagonist wakes in a strange facility with little memory of how they arrived. Scientists say they are helping, but repeatedly place the character in a sensory deprivation tank, where they must fight monsters in their mind.
That premise leads into a run structure where surviving combat is only part of the challenge. The player also decides what the arena becomes, making each new section of the map part of the run’s tactical and character-building choices.
How does tile-by-tile map building work?
- Start with one tile. A run opens on a single piece of the map alongside an enemy wave.
- Clear the wave. Defeating the enemies lets the player add another tile next to the existing one.
- Choose the next tile. The addition expands the arena and can award a weapon or improve particular character stats.
- Fight in the expanded layout. The new tile brings another wave, and its position helps determine the geometry of the next encounter.
So, tile placement is not simply a way to reveal more rooms. A tile can affect what the character can do and where the player can move, take cover, or get cornered. The map grows over the course of a run rather than arriving as a fixed arena.

Why does the layout matter in combat?
Each placement is a trade-off between the benefits a tile offers and the terrain it creates. A maze-like layout might give the player useful angles or features to exploit, but its narrow passages can also become a trap. As lead software engineer Fritz Copes puts it, “You can decide to make a labyrinthine hellscape, at the risk of trapping yourself.”
Open spaces create a different problem: they may leave the player short of cover or escape routes. The layout therefore shapes the risk of each wave, not just the appearance of the map.

The reported choices include moving toward a point of interest, healing, or taking an ability that makes bullets bounce off walls. Environmental features such as autonomous turrets and exploding barrels are also examples of things a player might prioritize. These examples illustrate the kinds of decisions described for the game; they are not independent hands-on findings.
How do tiles connect the map to character growth?
Some tiles provide weapons or improve particular stats, so the player is developing a character while assembling an arena. The map’s physical form also changes how those improvements play out: a wall-bouncing bullet ability, for example, has an obvious connection to the walls and corridors the player has chosen to build.

What inspired Volatiles’ map-building mechanic?
Game director Ian Dovhan says the original idea came to him around March 2023 while he was playing Dorfromantik. “The inspiration for the map building originally came from playing Dorfromantik,” he said, adding that the team had not heard of Blue Prince at that point.

Dovhan summed up the design question this way: “What if you had an action-survivor-like game where you built the map yourself?” The answer in Volatiles is to make map construction part of an action run, where every new piece also changes the conditions for survival.

Volatiles uses player-built terrain within a solo combat run, and tiles can influence character development as well as the arena.
