In Australia, you can request annual leave to play Grand Theft Auto VI, but there is no special GTA 6 leave entitlement—and your employer does not have to approve the launch dates automatically. Annual leave timing must be agreed, and a refusal must be reasonable. A Fair Work Ombudsman social post reportedly used the game to illustrate ordinary leave options; the original post’s wording and full contents have not been verified.
Can you take annual leave to play GTA 6?
Yes. Annual leave is paid time off and is not limited to particular personal activities, so you can request it for a game’s launch. You need to make the request before taking the leave, following any notice or process set by your award, registered agreement, employment contract or workplace policy.
Under section 88 of the Fair Work Act 2009, paid annual leave may be taken for a period agreed between the employee and employer, and an employer must not unreasonably refuse a request. The Fair Work Ombudsman puts it plainly: “An employer can only refuse an employee’s request for annual leave if the refusal is reasonable.” Fair Work Ombudsman: Taking annual leave · Fair Work Act 2009, section 88
That rule does not guarantee approval for a particular release date. Make the request as early as practical, specify the dates, and check your workplace’s applicable rules. If the dates are important to you, ask before making plans that depend on being off work.

Who gets paid annual leave in Australia?
Fair Work Ombudsman guidance says full-time and part-time employees generally receive four weeks of paid annual leave for each year of service. Casual employees do not receive paid annual leave under the general rules. Check the official annual leave guidance for how the entitlement applies to your employment arrangement.
What if your annual leave request is refused?
An employer may refuse a request if the refusal is reasonable; whether it is reasonable depends on the circumstances and applicable workplace arrangements. The law does not establish that a game launch makes a request automatically more important than staffing or operational needs. You can ask why the dates cannot be approved and whether different dates or a shorter period would work.

Can you use sick leave or unpaid leave instead?

What the reported GTA 6 post does—and does not—mean
A secondary report dated 7 October 2026 described a Fair Work Ombudsman social post that used Grand Theft Auto VI as a humorous frame for explaining ordinary leave options. The original post was not available to verify its exact wording or all the options it listed, so it should not be treated as a new government entitlement, an endorsement of taking leave to play, or a promise that an employer will approve a request.
