What Layden said about buying a game
In remarks attributed to him by Decrypt, Layden put the issue this way: “It changes the conversation from: do you own a game to do you have access to a digital asset?” He also questioned the value of a purchase that cannot be resold: “If you can’t sell a thing, that means you don’t own a thing. If you don’t own it, what are you buying? If you’re buying access, that doesn’t sound quite as sexy,”
Decrypt reported that Layden made the comments in an interview with The Expansion Pass podcast. The quotations here are reproduced through that report; the original recording and interview date were not established in the available coverage. His argument is about how consumers may perceive ownership and resale, not a legal ruling defining what rights a game buyer has.
What Sony is reportedly planning—and what remains unclear
Decrypt reported on October 8, 2026, that Sony plans to stop producing physical discs for new games in 2028. Video Games Chronicle also reported on October 6 that Layden addressed a decision to stop making discs starting in 2028. Neither report establishes an official Sony announcement or spells out which games, publishers, regions, or console generations the plan would cover. Decrypt’s report and VGC’s coverage therefore support a narrower description: Sony reportedly plans to stop producing discs for new games in 2028.

That is not the same as discs disappearing immediately, every existing physical game becoming unavailable, or all future PlayStation releases necessarily going digital. Until Sony defines the plan, its practical reach remains uncertain.
Why the change matters to physical-game buyers
Layden’s criticism centers on the difference between having a physical copy that may be resold and buying access to a digital game. That difference matters to players who value collecting or resale, even as downloads offer convenience. The coverage describes physical buyers as a particularly dedicated group, but does not provide market data that quantifies their share.

Decrypt also reported that a petition had received more than 385,000 signatures. That figure is Decrypt’s reported count, not an independently verified measure of how players broadly feel about physical games.

A disc-drive accessory may be relevant to some PS5 owners, but compatibility depends on the exact console model. Check Sony’s current official compatibility guidance before buying a drive; a compatible accessory would address disc playback on that console, not resolve the reported 2028 production plan. iTechGuides’ discussion likewise cautions that compatibility is model-specific.
