The Hunter Exam is a dangerous, multi-stage qualification, but passing its visible stages is not the whole story: VIZ’s summaries describe Nen mastery as a hidden final test that follows the exam. Gon and Killua learn Nen from Wing at Heaven’s Arena, after Gon has already been certified in the recap’s wording.
What is the Hunter Exam in Hunter x Hunter?
It is a demanding qualification for people seeking to become Hunters. VIZ describes a series of physical and mental trials that can include endurance tests, dangerous man-eating animals, puzzles and deadly contests. The applicants face serious risks, and only a small fraction succeed.
VIZ’s official series page says less than one in one hundred thousand can pass the qualification exam. That is a figure given for the fictional Hunter Exam by VIZ Media; the page does not state a publication year, and it is not a real-world pass rate or a current annual statistic. Why the characters take it
- Gon Freecss wants to find his father.
- Killua Zoldyck enters on a whim.
- Leorio wants money for medical school.
- Kurapika seeks justice related to the Kurta Clan.
Their different motives give the exam personal stakes beyond the challenge of surviving its stages. VIZ recounts these motivations in its January 24, 2018 series recap.

How do you unlock Nen?
In the story, Nen is control of the life energy—also called aura—that suffuses living things. Gon and Killua learn it from Wing at Heaven’s Arena, where they need Nen to advance. VIZ describes the setting as “a tower combat arena, where the victors ascend floors while the losers stay down below.” VIZ’s Heaven’s Arena Arc feature
Nen is not taught in the public-facing exam stages described in VIZ’s recap. Instead, the publisher’s volume 7 description connects Gon and Killua’s later study with Wing to a secret final test of the Hunter Exam. That makes Nen a story-specific, concealed requirement—not a real-world training method or a game mechanic.
Does Gon learn Nen during the Hunter Exam?
No: in VIZ’s account, Gon learns Nen after the visible exam, at Heaven’s Arena with Killua under Wing’s instruction. VIZ’s recap says Gon is certified after the exam, then says he cannot be officially recognized as a true Hunter until he learns and masters Nen. VIZ’s Heaven’s Arena feature also uses the recognition wording, while its description of Hunter x Hunter, Vol. 7 calls Nen lessons the secret final test.
Those publisher summaries use two stages of language: certification after the exam, followed by official recognition as a true Hunter once Nen is mastered. The safest reading is that Nen functions as a concealed or post-exam requirement in VIZ’s summaries; they do not say that the listed public stages teach Nen.

VIZ’s summaries distinguish passing the qualification exam from being officially recognized as a true Hunter. In the recap, Gon becomes certified after the exam but still needs to learn and master Nen for that recognition; the volume 7 description presents the Nen lessons as the secret final test. So, in the publisher’s account, passing the visible exam alone does not complete the full qualification.

Gon and Killua continue to Heaven’s Arena, where Wing teaches them Nen. That training advances their arena progress and, in VIZ’s volume 7 description, completes the exam’s hidden final test for Gon. The relevant English manga reading companion is Hunter x Hunter, Vol. 7 (ISBN 978-1-4215-0332-5), listed by VIZ as 192 pages and released March 7, 2006. Those are bibliographic details for that edition; the publisher page does not establish current retailer stock.
