No: Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is not planned to have fewer minigames than Rebirth. Director Naoki Hamaguchi said the team heard varied feedback about the number of minigames, but its response is to make them feel more optional—with clearer rewards and less reliance on them for character growth—not to cut their count.
What the director said about minigame criticism
In a June 6, 2026 interview with GameSpot, series director Naoki Hamaguchi acknowledged that the team had heard a range of reactions to Rebirth’s minigames and how many there were. He described the challenge as finding the right way to deliver minigames to players today, rather than simply increasing or decreasing their number.
Hamaguchi said the remake series is intended as a homage to the original Final Fantasy 7. He said reducing the minigame count was not the team’s intent for Revelation. The headline’s “doesn’t want to hear your discourse” is comic framing, not a quote: his comments acknowledge the feedback while defending the design goal of including minigames.
How Revelation is meant to make minigames feel optional
The distinction is between how many activities exist and how much players need to do them. GameSpot reported that most minigames would be optional and reward players with character customization rather than combat buffs. Hamaguchi’s reasoning was that an activity can feel compulsory if players must complete it to improve a character, even when it is technically labeled optional.

Push Square’s June 10, 2026 report adds that the team planned to make rewards clear before players take part, offer options to adjust minigame difficulty, and let players skip a minigame. Hamaguchi also told Push Square, “We won’t reduce the number of minigames, but we will continue making every effort to ensure as many players as possible can embrace them.” These are reported plans, not features independently verified through a finished game.
Rebirth and Revelation: what is changing
| Design question | Rebirth | Revelation plan reported in 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Minigame count | Feedback about the quantity was acknowledged by Hamaguchi. | No reduction planned, according to Hamaguchi. |
| Participation and progression | Hamaguchi said that tying optional activities heavily to character growth can make them feel less optional. | GameSpot reported that most minigames would be optional and give customization rewards rather than combat buffs. |
| Reward information | No directly comparable disclosure change is established in the cited reporting. | Push Square reported that rewards would be made clear before participation. |
| Difficulty and skipping | No directly comparable changes are established in the cited reporting. | Push Square reported planned difficulty adjustments and an option to skip. |
The reporting therefore points to a change in how minigames fit into progression and choice, not a smaller activity list. Whether those changes make individual activities less frustrating will depend on how they work in the released game.
