Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Impossible Creatures is the cult classic this headline points to: a PC real-time strategy game from Relic Entertainment and Microsoft built around making combat units by combining animal traits. It is an intriguing candidate for a revival, but there is no confirmed Xbox revival announcement in the available evidence. The comparison with Gears of War: E-Day is about contrasting a return to a franchise’s origins with the chance to bring back an older, unusually inventive game—not a documented similarity in their mechanics.
What is Impossible Creatures?
Released for PC, Impossible Creatures is a real-time strategy game associated with developer Relic Entertainment and publisher Microsoft. Its distinctive idea is creature construction: players collect animal DNA and combine traits to create mutant units, then command those units in battles. The Washington Post’s 2003 review describes this animal-combination system and a story set in the 1930s, involving a laboratory and an adversarial scientist. The Washington Post’s 2003 review.

That premise gives the game an identity beyond its setting or period. Its central appeal is the ability to shape an army from combinations of animal characteristics—a creative hook that makes it easy to understand why someone would want the game reconsidered today.
What did the original game include?
A 2002 GameSpot report on Microsoft and Relic’s announcement described the following launch-era specifications. These are historical figures, not a measure of current multiplayer activity or an independent reassessment of the game.

Why does Gears of War: E-Day bring this game to mind?
Gears of War: E-Day is presented in the available coverage as a third-person shooter returning to the origins of its series. Impossible Creatures, by contrast, is a PC strategy game organized around building creatures and directing them in combat. That difference matters: the case for reviving Impossible Creatures is not that it plays like Gears, but that a current return to a familiar franchise can prompt a broader question about which older games deserve renewed attention.
Rank #2
- Thousands of units: “Impossible Creatures” has more than 50 animals that can be combined to create a vast number of mutant creatures, the results of which are limited only by players’ creativity.
- Explore rich 3-D worlds – The highly detailed, fully 3-D dynamic world allows players to battle in four richly detailed environments, each with special flora and fauna.
- Fully remastered to work with modern systems
The animal-trait system gives Impossible Creatures a clear foundation for a second chance. Its original concept can be explained in a sentence, yet it leaves room for players to experiment with their own combinations. That makes it more than a nostalgia pick: it has a distinctive gameplay idea at its core.
Has Xbox announced a revival?
No revival announcement is established by the available sources. They document the original game and its historical features, but do not confirm that Microsoft or Xbox is developing, publishing, or planning a new Impossible Creatures. The same evidence does not establish the current rights owner or whether the original game is currently available to buy. A revival is therefore a wish, not a confirmed project.
What could a second chance mean?
The idea of a revival does not have to mean a particular format. A return could take the form of a modern re-release or a new game, but the available evidence does not indicate that either is planned. What makes the prospect compelling is the underlying design: a strategy game where the units themselves are assembled from animal traits, rather than selected from a conventional roster.
