The studio is not stripping away the game’s wuxia identity: Soulframe describes cultural influence as its spiritual core, while human emotions provide the story’s most accessible entry point. That is a creative goal, not proof of how Western audiences will respond.
How S-Game says it makes the story accessible
In an interview with Insider Gaming published October 9, 2026, director Soulframe described the intended balance: the central story should make sense even to players who do not know the cultural traditions behind its setting. He characterized the story in familiar emotional terms—revenge and bonds between fellow disciples—and said Chinese elements add flavor and authenticity without becoming a barrier to understanding.

“We don’t want anything culturally heavy, like an obstacle to block your understanding of the world and the story,” Soulframe said. He added: “We just want to make it cool and understandable for everyone, with this revenge and fellow disciple kind of story.”
That framing separates two things that can coexist: a story’s emotional and narrative entry points, and the cultural influences that give its world a distinct identity. Soulframe said the team does not want cultural elements to “cover the main, human emotions.” He called those influences the game’s spiritual core and described the goal as balance, not removal.

What the 5% and 95% figures mean
Soulframe estimated that deeper cultural elements account for 5% of the experience, with universal experiences and emotions accounting for the other 95%. Those are his estimates as reported by Insider Gaming, not measured audience data or the result of an independent study. They describe how the director presents the design priority; they do not quantify how much of the finished game a player will understand.
Soulframe also explained that S-Game’s developers grew up influenced by Western and Japanese entertainment, particularly Hollywood and anime. That is his account of the team’s perspective—not a universal formula for making a culturally specific game accessible abroad.

How Soulframe compares the approach with Black Myth: Wukong
In the interview, Soulframe contrasted the goal for Phantom Blade Zero with his view of Black Myth: Wukong. He suggested that players without relevant cultural background could miss “almost half” of what that game’s developers wanted to deliver. This is Soulframe’s comparison, not an independently verified assessment of either game or its audiences.
The distinction he is drawing is about two different design priorities: how much prior cultural knowledge a player needs to follow a central story, and how strongly cultural specificity shapes a game’s identity. The available statements establish S-Game’s intended position on those questions, but not a rigorous comparison between the games or evidence of Western players’ reactions.

What the game’s setting and premise bring to that goal
PlayStation describes Phantom Blade Zero as a dark wuxia action RPG powered by Unreal Engine 5. Its official materials introduce Soul, a swordsman with 66 days left to live who is framed for murdering his master and pursued through the Wulin. That premise gives players a concrete route into the story—an accusation, a limited time to live, and a pursuit—within a world shaped by wuxia influences.
PlayStation’s August 2026 State of Play feature also describes side quests that can open story paths, weapon upgrades and reforging, summons, and selectable difficulties ranging from Wayfarer through Hellwalker and Sixty-Six Days. PlayStation identifies Donnie Yen as a creative consultant and performer for Mó Yuan through facial and motion capture. These are details from PlayStation and S-Game’s promotional materials, not independent assessments of how the systems or performance work in play.
