“Matchmaking cancelled” means Fortnite did not complete the attempt to place you into a match. Epic’s published support articles do not define this exact wording. The explanations Epic gives for related matchmaking errors point to two broad causes: a problem on Epic’s servers or a problem with your network connection. Treat those as the branches to check, not as a confirmed diagnosis of your particular message.
What the message does and does not tell you
The message describes a failed placement, not a penalty. Epic’s support material does not link this wording to a specific numbered error, a ban, or an account restriction, so do not assume any of those from the text alone. If the message appears once and then disappears, a temporary service or connection problem is the more likely explanation.
The two likely causes
A server-side matchmaking problem
Epic’s explanation for Matchmaking Error #5 and #7 is that the problem “is usually caused by a server issue or a network connection problem.” [Epic Games Player Support] That article covers those numbered errors, not the “cancelled” wording, but it is the closest official description of the same stage of the process. When Epic’s matchmaking service is affected, the fix is on Epic’s side and waiting is the right response.
A problem on your network or device
The second branch is your own connection or machine. Epic’s guidance for related numbered matchmaking errors includes checking your connection and the local settings that can interfere with it (listed below). This branch is more likely when the status page shows no issue and the message keeps returning on your connection while other players are matching normally.

Steps to try, in order
- Check the status page. Open the Fortnite Status page at fortnite.statuspage.io and look at the matchmaking component. If Epic reports matchmaking as affected, wait for it to be resolved and then try again. Status pages change over time, so check it when you are about to play rather than relying on an earlier reading.
- Restart Fortnite. If the status page shows no issue, close the game completely, relaunch it, and try matchmaking again.
- Check your connection. Follow Epic’s connection troubleshooting for related matchmaking errors, starting with the checks in the list below. Epic’s article on numbered matchmaking errors is at this page.
- Report it if it persists. If the message continues after these checks, report it through Fortnite’s in-game bug-report process or contact Epic support, depending on your mode and platform.
Other checks Epic lists for related errors
Epic’s numbered-error guidance includes these checks. None is guaranteed to clear the “cancelled” message, but each addresses a local condition that can interrupt matchmaking:
- Restart your modem and router.
- Synchronize your device’s clock.
- Clear the device cache.
- Disable any proxy you have enabled.
- Check firewall settings and close background applications that use the network.
- Review your network configuration.

Creative-specific guidance: region and DNS
For a related Fortnite Creative error, the message “We were unable to begin the match due to an error,” Epic recommends trying an alternative matchmaking region and switching DNS servers. [Epic Games Player Support] These are troubleshooting steps for that Creative error. They are not confirmed fixes for every “matchmaking cancelled” message, and they should not be applied to the standard mode without a reason.

Weighing a region change
Matchmaking can select different servers within a region, and Epic says subregions may be used to balance ping, queue times, and fairness. [Epic Games Player Support] A different region can shorten or lengthen queues and change latency, so it is a trade-off rather than an upgrade. If you switch regions to test the message, switch back afterward if the new region produces worse ping for your location.
Keep in mind that the status page reflects conditions at the time you check it. Use it as a live check on the day you play.
