The event was announced in 2024 with a planned inaugural edition in Saudi Arabia, but the IOC’s later reporting moved that plan to 2027, and an IOC social media post dated 30 October 2025 reported that the partnership with the Saudi Olympic and Paralympic Committee had ended. No replacement host, date, or game list has been identified. Titles that often get mentioned in this context come from the 2023 Asian Games, which is a different event.
What the official record shows
The event’s history is short, and its status has changed more than once. The table below lists each dated development and what the source actually establishes about it.
| Date | What was reported | Status today |
|---|---|---|
| 14 October 2023 | IOC President Thomas Bach announced that the IOC was exploring the creation of an Olympic Esports Games. | Exploratory announcement only; no format or games named. |
| July 2024 | The IOC announced the event and an original plan for an inaugural edition in Saudi Arabia in 2025, in partnership with the Saudi Olympic and Paralympic Committee. | Superseded. The 2025 date did not hold. |
| 2025 | The IOC athlete workbook described the inaugural event as set for 2027. | A revised historical plan, not a current schedule. |
| 30 October 2025 | An official IOC social media post reported that cooperation with the Saudi Olympic and Paralympic Committee had ended. | No replacement host, date, or lineup was identified in the material reviewed. |
The gap between these entries matters for anyone looking for a list of games. A 2027 date appearing in a 2025 document does not mean the event is still scheduled for 2027 in Saudi Arabia, because the later IOC post describes the Saudi arrangement as over. Any article that still presents Riyadh 2027 as the confirmed plan is working from outdated material.
The seven titles from the 2023 Asian Games

These titles are a record of what was played at the Asian Games. The IOC material does not say that any of them were chosen for the Olympic Esports Games, so they should not be read as a preview of its lineup.
The same workbook also reports the scale of that Asian Games event, with the figures attributed to the IOC athlete workbook (publication year not stated in the version reviewed):

What the IOC has said about the format
The IOC’s July 2024 announcement described the intent behind the initiative with this line: “The Olympic Esports Games will be a new, regular event in the Olympic Movement.” That statement describes the original plan. It was not a guarantee of a specific date, host, or game list, and it should be read as the IOC’s stated intent at the time of the 2024 announcement.

If the IOC or an organising body announces a lineup, check it against the following points before treating it as settled:
Rank #4
- Designed for pro-level performance, the Gen-2 TMR sticks still use magnetic technology to eliminate physical contact, delivering long-lasting anti-stick drift reliability. At the same time, they offer smoother, more linear control and ultra-low power consumption, providing precise and responsive gameplay for competitive gamers.
- The Tarantula 8K PC features dual-mode trigger stops, letting you switch effortlessly between Hall Effect analog triggers and Micro switch triggers. Precision-tuned Hall Effect analog triggers deliver smooth, linear input for accurate control, while clicky Micro switch triggers provide instant response.
- With an 8000Hz polling rate over wired connection, the Tarantula 8K PC delivers smoother control and instant response, ensuring every input is registered with esports-grade precision.
- Built-in 6-axis gyroscope enhances aiming accuracy and fine control, offering greater flexibility for competitive and immersive gameplay.
- Including two lockable back buttons, two mini bumpers and five extra front buttons, each supports up to 32-step macro recording, giving gamers advanced customization and faster in-game execution.
- Exact title and version. Confirm the specific game and edition, such as a regional or Asian Games version, rather than a franchise name.
- Platform and ruleset. Note whether the announcement specifies the platform and the competitive rules used.
- Qualification route. Look for how athletes and national teams would qualify, which determines who can actually compete.
- Category. Establish whether each title is a traditional esport or a simulation or virtual sport, since the two categories are treated differently.
- Source. Prefer an IOC newsroom release or an official announcement from the organiser over social posts or secondary reporting.
Popularity, existing Olympic sport analogues, or a title’s presence at the Asian Games should not be used to predict inclusion. None of these factors is an established selection criterion in the material reviewed.

Limits of the current evidence
- The IOC social media post is the strongest available evidence for the end of the Saudi cooperation, but a formal IOC newsroom statement on that change, with replacement plans, was not located.
- The workbook’s publication year is not stated in the version reviewed, so the 2027 date should be treated as a dated plan, not a current schedule.
- Any development after the October 2025 post is outside the evidence used for this article.
