If it goes out, the Age of Fire ends and the Age of Dark begins, according to a fan-maintained lore reference. The title could also mean an ordinary candle, so the distinction matters: one is a fictional transition in the game’s world; the other is combustion stopping when a flame lacks enough fresh air.
What does the First Flame mean in Dark Souls?
The First Flame is a central force in Dark Souls’ fictional cosmology. A GDC-hosted narrative analysis discusses the flame’s fading alongside decay and the Undead Curse. That gives the game-lore context for the question, but it does not make the story a real-world prediction or settle every interpretation of the series’ cosmology. Read the GDC-hosted analysis.

What happens if it goes out?
In the lore summary on the fan-maintained Dark Souls Wiki, the First Flame going out marks the end of the Age of Fire and the beginning of the Age of Dark. See the First Flame entry.
That answer is the broad lore framing, not a complete account of what the Age of Dark looks like in every installment. The available sources do not establish that the world is destroyed or resolve all competing readings of the game’s cosmology.

If you mean an ordinary candle flame
A candle flame needs fresh air to keep combustion going. Michael Faraday’s historical lecture demonstrates a candle fading and going out in air altered by combustion. Read Faraday’s lecture on the candle.
Faraday also describes combustible vapor rising from a candle just after it is blown out. If that vapor remains warm and undisturbed, a nearby lit taper can ignite the vapor trail and relight the wick. This is a brief physical effect, not the same idea as the First Flame in the game.

- Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
- Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
- Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
- Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.

Why the wording can be read two ways
Capitalized “First Flame” points toward Dark Souls, and the exact phrase appears in a game-lore context. But the title by itself does not confirm that meaning; a literal question about a candle is also possible. The game answer concerns a fictional age transition, while the candle answer concerns combustion and air.
