In the Story Mode campaign, get oil by establishing the Old Dreadnought colony, frostbreaking to its oil deposits, and building Extraction Districts on them. Then connect the colony to New London and set an oil transfer. New London’s Generator cannot burn oil until you research and install a compatible Generator upgrade.
How to get oil in Story Mode
- Open a route to the Old Dreadnought. Build a Logistics District at an Old Waystation and send scouts toward the Desolate Coast. The Chapter 1 route described by Prima Games also uses Frozen Bay to connect the colony back toward New London.
- Establish the colony and expose the deposits. After settling the Old Dreadnought, frostbreak toward the oil deposits. Build an Extraction District over each accessible deposit to begin extracting oil. A Chapter 2 guide describes three deposits at the site, though the number you can access may depend on the map and objective context (Gamer Guides).
- Connect the colony to New London. Build a trail or connect the colony to an existing supply network. Establishing a route does not, by itself, set how much oil the city receives.
- Set the oil transfer. Open the Old Dreadnought colony’s resource-transfer controls using its colony icon, then allocate oil to New London. Oil has to be extracted, routed, and explicitly transferred for it to reach the city (Gamepressure; Prima Games).
- Upgrade New London’s Generator. Research and install a Generator upgrade that can use oil. Until then, the campaign Generator is coal-only.
How much oil does the Chapter 1 objective require?
For the Chapter 1 “Black Gold” objective, Prima Games reports that the supply line must send at least 75 Oil output to New London. This is the threshold for that objective—not a stockpile target or a universal production rate. Check the objective’s progress after setting the transfer to confirm the supply line is meeting its requirement.

How to increase oil production
If the Old Dreadnought is not producing enough, expand its Extraction Districts and research and build Pumpjacks where available. These can increase extraction, but also require workers and raise heat demand. Maintain the colony’s food and other essential support as you expand; oil production competes for resources and workforce (Gamer Guides).
For a later Chapter 2 choice, Gamer Guides describes an optional Wanderers demand of 30,000 Oil within 48 weeks. That figure applies to that specific story choice, not to the Chapter 1 objective or oil production generally (Gamer Guides, 2024).

Choose a Generator upgrade: fuel flexibility or oil efficiency

Gamer Guides characterizes the route choice as permanent, so consider your supply before committing to the oil-only option. It also links the broader progression paths to different Chapter 2 consequences: Progress/Oil Pumps unlocks Deep Melting Drills, while Adaptation unlocks unlimited-output Frostland settlements. Those are progression tradeoffs, not extra oil-extraction steps (Gamer Guides).

The Old Dreadnought is the immediate oil source in the relevant Story Mode sequence, but it is not the only possible source across all modes and maps. The community-maintained Frostpunk 2 Wiki and Guides lists deposits worked by Extraction Districts, Pumpjacks that raise extraction, some Frostland outposts and upgradable settlements, occasional one-time shipments, and Coal Liquefactors that convert coal to oil. Some Utopia Builder maps may generate deep oil deposits; availability depends on the map and mode. If a source does not appear in your scenario, use the resources and objectives available on that map rather than assuming every playthrough has the same deposits.
