What Is the ATK Stat in Genshin Impact?

ATK combines character and weapon base attack with percentage and flat bonuses, but damage also depends on ability scaling and other modifiers.

ATK is short for attack. In Genshin Impact, it is a stat used to calculate damage for attacks and abilities that scale from ATK. Your displayed total combines character and weapon base ATK, ATK% bonuses applied to that base, and flat ATK bonuses. ATK is only one part of a damage calculation, so it does not by itself predict every hit.

How the ATK total is calculated

The Genshin Impact Wiki’s ATK reference gives this formula:

ATK = [(character ATK + weapon ATK) × (1 + ATK% bonus)] + flat ATK bonus

Character ATK is the flat value from character leveling and ascension; weapon ATK is the weapon’s flat attack. Their sum is your base ATK. ATK% bonuses increase that base, while flat ATK bonuses are added afterward.

In the character Attributes menu, base ATK is shown in white and additional ATK in green, according to the same community reference. The exact formula is not confirmed here by current official game documentation, so treat it as a general explanation rather than a guarantee covering every effect or exception.

What contributes to ATK?

Base ATK

Base ATK is character base ATK plus weapon base ATK. A HoYoLAB character-leveling guide describes this sum as the base attack shown in white in the character’s stats. Effects that specifically refer to base ATK use this underlying sum rather than the full displayed total.

ATK% bonuses

ATK% raises base ATK rather than multiplying every point of flat ATK. Bonuses can come from sources such as artifacts, weapon passives, skills, and character ascension. The ATK reference distinguishes these stat bonuses from DMG% bonuses: ATK% changes the ATK value, while DMG% is a separate damage modifier.

Flat ATK bonuses

Flat ATK adds a fixed amount after ATK% is applied. The reference lists artifacts, skills, and food among possible sources. Because flat ATK is added after the percentage calculation, it does not itself receive the same ATK% increase in the formula.

Does ATK affect elemental attacks and catalyst users?

Elemental damage can still scale from ATK. The relevant question is not whether an attack is physical or elemental, or whether the character uses a catalyst; it is which stat the specific attack or ability uses. If an ability scales from ATK, increasing ATK can raise its damage before the other damage modifiers are applied. Check the character’s ability description for its scaling rather than assuming every ability uses ATK.

Why your damage is not the same as your ATK

ATK is an input to damage calculation, not a damage number. A HoYoLAB guide’s expected-damage example also accounts for an ability’s damage multiplier, damage bonuses, critical hits, enemy defense, and resistance. These factors help explain why two hits from characters with similar ATK can differ, and why a higher ATK total does not guarantee a proportionally higher final hit.

Reaction damage can also follow different scaling rules; the ATK reference notes that some reactions do not use ATK in the same way as ordinary attacks. The available references do not establish a complete, current list of exceptions, so consult the details for the specific ability or reaction when precision matters.

Should you build ATK or another damage stat?

There is no universal ATK-versus-CRIT rule. The better investment depends on the character and ability’s scaling, your existing stats, and the other factors affecting the hit. A high displayed ATK number alone is not enough to decide which upgrade will improve your damage most.
