Official God of War material reviewed does not confirm whether Kratos was Black before the ashes covered his skin. Santa Monica Studio has described an earlier Greek-era depiction as “whiter” and more uniform than the later Norse-era design, but that is a comment about how the character was rendered—not a statement of his natural complexion or racial identity.
What does the official material say about Kratos’s skin?
Santa Monica Studio’s Valhalla design discussion compares Kratos’s Greek-era appearance with his look in God of War Ragnarök. It describes the earlier design as more stylized, with skin that is “whiter” and more uniform in color; the scar and tattoo were also treated to read as redder.

That passage is about a particular visual design. It does not say what Kratos’s complexion was before the ashes, nor does it identify his race. A character model’s appearance in a game or illustration is not, by itself, an official biography.
Do the other design and story sources settle it?
No. A 2022 PlayStation Blog interview with Santa Monica Studio art director Raf Grassetti discusses the visual development of Kratos and Atreus for God of War Ragnarök, including elements carried over from Kratos’s Greek outfit and tattoo. It does not specify his racial identity or a precise pre-ashes complexion.

Santa Monica Studio’s retrospective on the 2018 game explains the Norse-era Kratos in relation to the violence, distrust, and deception of his past with the Greek pantheon. That supplies character and story context, not an answer about his natural skin tone.
Why the ash-white appearance is not proof of his earlier complexion
Kratos’s pale, ash-covered appearance is a defining part of his design, but the studio’s comparison concerns how different games depict him. His rendered complexion can also vary with art direction, lighting, and scene. Those visual differences may invite interpretation, but they do not establish a definitive racial identity or reveal what he looked like before the ashes.

- Physical combat over the shoulder free camera brings the action closer than ever combat in God of war is up close frenetic and unflinching. Kratos' Axes powerful, magic and multi faceted is a brutal weapon as well as a versatile tool for exploration
- Midgard and beyond: Set within the untamed forests, mountains, and realms of Norse lore, God of war features a distinctly new setting with its own pantheon of creatures, monsters, and gods
- Vicious, physical combat with an over the shoulder free camera that brings the player closer to the action than ever before
So two questions need to stay separate: how a particular game depicts Kratos, and whether official canon specifies his natural pre-ashes complexion or race. The cited design material informs the first; it does not resolve the second.

Based on the official sources cited here, it is not confirmed that Kratos was Black before the ashes—and those sources do not establish that he was not Black, either. They describe visual design choices without making a direct claim about his pre-ashes appearance or racial identity. A categorical yes or no would go beyond what they say.
