A Steam game is yours to keep only when a specific offer says so. Headlines that pair a weekly count with “keep them forever” are common, but as of October 9, 2026, we could not confirm a dated Steam list of 12 free-to-keep games for any single week. Treat that number as unverified, and check each game’s own offer before you claim anything.
Three different things get called “free” on Steam
Most confusion comes from using one word for three different arrangements. The table below separates them. Where an offer’s length or terms are not stated in the source we reviewed, the cell says so rather than guessing.

| Arrangement | Do you keep the game? | Time limit | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Promotional free-to-keep claim | Yes, if the offer’s terms say so, and only after you claim it | Set by the individual offer; start and end times are not stated in general terms and must be read from that offer | Exact offer wording, claim deadline with time zone, eligibility and account conditions |
| Free weekend | No. It gives temporary access to play | Limited to the weekend period announced for that game | Start and end times, and whether progress carries over to a purchase |
| Free-to-play game | Not applicable. It has no purchase price to begin with | No expiry on the base game, though paid items or add-ons may exist | Whether a listing is the full game or a limited version |
| Demo event (for example, Steam Next Fest) | Not a game claim. Participation lets you try demos | Event period is multi-day, per Valve’s Steamworks documentation | Whether a demo is free to play, and whether the full game is sold separately |
What we could confirm
The one specific free-to-keep Steam offer our reporting could verify was Crystal Crisis. A secondary tracker reported it as free to keep on Steam from September 14 to 21, 2026. The same tracker later recorded the offer as expired. That is a third-party listing, not an official Steam offer page, so it shows how such promotions are described rather than establishing current availability.
Valve’s Steamworks documentation describes Next Fest as a multi-day event in which players try demos. Taking part in an event like that gives you temporary play access. It does not, on its own, add a permanent game to your library.

We did not find an official Steam store page or dated roundup naming twelve games in one week that were free to keep. Without those, we cannot say which titles the headline refers to, what they would keep for, or how long they would remain available.

How to check whether a game is really yours to keep
- Open the game’s Steam store page directly. Search for the exact title in the Steam store rather than relying on a headline or a tracker’s summary.
- Read the offer wording on the store page and any linked announcement. Confirm that it says the game can be kept after claiming. If it only mentions a weekend, a demo, or “play for free,” it is not a permanent claim.
- Write down the start and end times, including the time zone. A deadline stated in one time zone can close earlier than you expect in another.
- Note any eligibility or account conditions, such as region limits or requirements tied to a particular account or platform, as the offer lists them.
- Claim the game before the deadline, then confirm it appears in your Steam Library. If it does not, check the offer terms and your account before assuming the claim worked.
Common mistakes
- Treating a free weekend as ownership. Access ends when the weekend does.
- Assuming every game in a weekly list carries the same terms. Each offer has its own dates and conditions.
- Relying on a tracker or headline without opening the Steam store page for the offer.
- Missing a deadline because the time zone was not recorded.
