There is no single best N64 emulator for every game. For most people starting from scratch, Gopher64 is the best modern standalone choice. Choose Rosalie’s Mupen GUI for a polished Mupen64Plus-based desktop interface, RetroArch for a multi-system setup, Project64 for a familiar Windows-only experience, and ares for accuracy-focused emulation, preservation, and Nintendo 64DD support.

This list reflects project status, platform availability, usability, compatibility goals, enhancements, controller and accessory support, and current maintenance as of August 10, 2026. It is an editorial guide rather than a claim that one emulator runs every N64 game best.

Quick comparison

Emulator Best for Latest verified status Platforms Main limitation
Gopher64 Most users wanting a modern standalone emulator v1.1.34, July 9, 2026 Windows, macOS ARM64, Linux, Android Newer project; Android is less mature
Rosalie’s Mupen GUI A polished Mupen64Plus desktop interface v0.9.0, June 14, 2026 Windows, Linux No official macOS release; netplay requires self-hosting or tunneling
RetroArch Multi-system libraries and portable configurations v1.22.2 listed as the latest official release Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, consoles and handhelds More complicated setup and core-specific behavior
Project64 A familiar Windows-first N64 interface Project64 3.0.1 public package Windows Windows-only and less current than several alternatives
ares Accuracy, preservation, development, and N64DD v148, May 30, 2026 Windows, macOS, Linux/BSD builds Trades some speed and convenience for accuracy-oriented design

Short version: Start with Gopher64 unless you already have a reason to use another option. RetroArch is the better choice if your N64 games are part of a larger multi-console library, while ares is the more interesting choice for preservation and unusual hardware.

How these N64 emulators were chosen

Nintendo 64 emulation is unusually dependent on the individual game, renderer, timing behavior, graphics microcode, audio implementation, controller accessories, and operating system. “Best” therefore means a combination of:

  • Safety and sustainability: official downloads, current releases, code signing, and whether a project has been archived or superseded.

The shortlist deliberately does not treat Mupen64Plus as a sixth beginner-friendly emulator. Mupen64Plus is an important emulator engine with modular plugins and a command-line frontend, but RMG and RetroArch are generally better user-facing ways to access that ecosystem.

1. Gopher64 — best modern standalone N64 emulator

Gopher64 is the best starting point for most people who want a dedicated N64 application. It is actively developed, cross-platform, and includes many of the features that users otherwise have to assemble through plugins, cores, or third-party tools.

The project’s official feature list includes upscaling, CRT shaders, CPU overclocking emulation, cheats, save states, homebrew support, built-in peer-to-peer netplay, and RetroAchievements. Its current v1.1.34 release provides downloads for Windows x86-64, macOS ARM64, Linux x86-64, Flatpak, and Android through the official releases page.

Why Gopher64 is the best general recommendation

  • It is a dedicated N64 emulator rather than a general-purpose frontend.
  • It supports Windows, Linux, Apple Silicon Macs, and Android.
  • Its interface is easier to approach than a manually configured plugin-based emulator.
  • It includes modern enhancement and convenience features.
  • It is a natural current successor to Simple64, whose official repository is archived and directs future development toward Gopher64.

Gopher64 is especially attractive for homebrew players, users who want built-in netplay, and anyone who does not want to manage RetroArch cores.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Useful setup details

Gopher64 supports a portable mode. Create an empty file named portable.txt beside the emulator executable, and the application will keep its game data in the application folder. That can be useful when moving the emulator between computers or keeping a self-contained installation.

The official Flatpak documentation gives this example for launching a legally obtained ROM:

flatpak run --filesystem=host:ro io.github.gopher64.gopher64 /path/to/rom.z64

When launching a source-built copy, the project documents:

./target/release/gopher64 /path/to/rom.z64

The v1.1.34 release changed input profiles to allow two bindings per N64 button. Existing profiles may need to be recreated after updating, so export or note your controller configuration before upgrading if you have a carefully tuned setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Important limitations

  • Do not call Gopher64 the most accurate emulator without a defined test matrix. The project describes itself as highly compatible, but that is not the same as a published, reproducible accuracy ranking.
  • The macOS package is for Apple Silicon ARM64. Do not assume that the official package is a native Intel Mac build.
  • Android is less mature than the desktop releases. An earlier Android release described Android 13 or newer as an early beta and required a controller, with no on-screen touch controller. Check the current release notes before choosing it for a phone or tablet.
  • Netplay is not automatically rollback netcode. Gopher64’s newer GGRS-based netplay does not currently use rollback, despite GGRS supporting that feature.
  • Online features have privacy implications. The project says netplay servers log IP addresses and basic session information, while RetroAchievements communicates with RetroAchievements systems.

Choose Gopher64 if: you want the easiest current standalone option on Windows or Linux, or you want a modern N64 application with netplay and RetroAchievements built in.

2. Rosalie’s Mupen GUI — best Mupen64Plus-based GUI

Rosalie’s Mupen GUI, usually abbreviated RMG, is the best polished desktop interface for the Mupen64Plus ecosystem. It gives users a conventional graphical launcher and configuration experience without requiring them to operate Mupen64Plus from the command line.

RMG’s official project describes it as a graphical frontend for Mupen64Plus. Its current release integrates components including the Mupen64Plus core, GLideN64, SDL, Vulkan, and controller libraries. The latest listed release is v0.9.0, released June 14, 2026, with official Windows downloads and Linux AppImage and Flatpak packages on the release page.

Why use RMG?

  • It has a familiar, dedicated desktop GUI.
  • It exposes detailed graphics, input, audio, and plugin-related settings.
  • It uses the mature Mupen64Plus ecosystem while hiding much of its command-line complexity.
  • It is a strong option for Windows and Linux users who want more control than a minimal emulator provides.
  • It supports cheats, controller configuration, save states, and multiple graphics paths, including GLideN64 and ParaLLEl-related options where available.

RMG is a particularly good fit for readers following older Project64 or Mupen64Plus configuration guides, because it offers a dedicated N64 workflow while remaining more actively maintained than many legacy frontends.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Netplay has changed

RMG’s current netplay arrangement needs a prominent qualification. Version 0.9.0 removed dispatcher-server support because the previously hosted servers became incompatible. The project now documents either self-hosting an rmg-netplay-server with the necessary port forwarding or using a tunneling service such as Radmin VPN. It is not a simple public matchmaking service.

Hyperkin "Captain" Premium Controller for N64 (Turquoise) - Nintendo 64
  • Compatible with all N64 models
  • 10 ft. Cable
  • Ergonomic, Premium build
  • Analog Joysticks

Limitations

  • There is currently no official macOS release documented by the project.
  • Compatibility depends partly on the selected Mupen64Plus video, audio, RSP, and input components.
  • No graphics plugin is universally best. GLideN64, ParaLLEl-RDP, and other backends can behave differently from game to game.
  • Some options are best saved as per-game settings rather than applied globally.

RMG’s recent release history also includes fixes related to Linux audio, screenshots, and Pokémon Stadium’s Game Boy Tower functionality. That does not guarantee perfect Transfer Pak behavior for every accessory-heavy setup, but it illustrates why current release notes matter more than old compatibility lists.

Choose RMG if: you use Windows or Linux, want a standalone application, and prefer a detailed Mupen64Plus-based GUI over RetroArch’s broader frontend.

3. RetroArch — best for multi-system libraries

RetroArch is the best choice when N64 games are one part of a larger multi-console setup. It is not itself an N64 emulator in the narrow sense. RetroArch is a frontend that loads emulator cores, such as Mupen64Plus-Next and ParaLLEl N64.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This distinction matters. The frontend controls playlists, controller profiles, shaders, save paths, achievements, and many global behaviors, while the selected core controls much of the actual N64 emulation. RetroArch explains this architecture in its official core documentation.

Basic N64 setup

  1. Install RetroArch from its official platform page or a trusted official distribution channel.
  2. Open Main Menu → Online Updater → Update Core Info Files if your installation needs updated metadata.
  3. Open Main Menu → Online Updater → Core Downloader or Update Cores, depending on the platform and current interface.
  4. Install Mupen64Plus-Next.
  5. Use Main Menu → Load Core and select Mupen64Plus-Next.
  6. Use Main Menu → Load Content and choose a legally obtained N64 ROM.
  7. If a game has graphics problems, open Quick Menu → Core Options while the game is running and test the available renderer or RSP settings.
  8. Save a per-game or per-core override only after confirming that the setting works for that particular title.

Menu wording can vary slightly by operating system, theme, and build, but Load Core, Load Content, and Online Updater are the key paths.

Mupen64Plus-Next versus ParaLLEl N64

Start with Mupen64Plus-Next for general use. Its Libretro documentation says it incorporates upstream Mupen64Plus accuracy improvements, GLideN64 enhancements, and ParaLLEl-RDP and ParaLLEl-RSP developments. It supports common N64 extensions such as .n64, .v64, and .z64, as well as additional formats used for particular functions, including .ndd and .gb.

ParaLLEl-based options can be worth testing for particular games or hardware behavior, especially when a Vulkan-capable graphics device is available. Do not assume that every core exposes identical features on every platform.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

RetroArch’s advantages

  • One controller configuration can cover many consoles.
  • It provides shaders, playlists, achievements, rewind, remapping, save states, and per-game overrides.
  • It is available on desktop, mobile, console, and handheld platforms.
  • It is a natural fit for Steam Deck and other Linux-based handhelds.
  • It can keep an entire retro library under one interface.

Why it can be frustrating

RetroArch’s flexibility creates its main weakness. Frontend settings and core settings can conflict, and a global video driver, shader, controller profile, or override can affect one game while fixing another. N64 core behavior also varies by platform and renderer.

For Mupen64Plus-Next, the Libretro documentation identifies cartridge saves such as content-name.srm in RetroArch’s Save directory and save states such as content-name.state# in the State directory. High-resolution texture packs may require .htc files in the Mupen64plus/cache directory plus matching core settings.

That same documentation lists RetroArch-level support for saves, save states, rewind, cheats, remapping, rumble, and achievements, but its feature table does not list netplay support for Mupen64Plus-Next. Do not promise that every RetroArch N64 core supports netplay simply because RetroArch itself has netplay features.

Choose RetroArch if: you already use it for other systems, want a portable multi-system configuration, or value shaders, playlists, rewind, achievements, and unified controller profiles more than the simplest N64-only setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Project64 — best familiar Windows-first option

Project64 remains a sensible choice for Windows users who want a traditional N64-specific interface. It is not the most current or cross-platform recommendation, but its long history, plugin ecosystem, save states, controller support, and large body of existing Windows-focused documentation keep it relevant.

The official public-download page lists Project64 3.0.1 Installer and Zip packages. The project’s official repository describes support for Nintendo 64 cartridge games and Nintendo 64 Disk Drive emulation, along with fullscreen play, save and load states, controller support, debugging tools, language support, and multiple graphics plugins.

  • 🎮Third party controller, not original N64 controller(non-USB edition). The best gift for your families or friends, that will bring back those childhood memories when you are playing these classic N64 games.

Strengths

  • N64-specific interface rather than a multi-system frontend.
  • Familiar workflow for long-time Windows users.
  • Save states and controller support are built in.
  • Plugin choices can help with games that behave differently across graphics backends.
  • Support for N64DD in addition to standard cartridge software.

What to know before installing

Project64 is officially Windows-only. Its repository lists 64-bit Windows 10 and 11, a 1 GHz-or-faster Intel or AMD processor with SSE2, and at least 2 GB of RAM among its requirements. It also lists graphics support ranging from DirectX 8 through OpenGL 3.3 and Vulkan 1.1 depending on the selected plugin, while warning that Intel integrated graphics can have issues.

There is an inconsistency in the current documentation: the requirements mention 64-bit Windows, while the repository also says that 64-bit builds are experimental and not currently supported. Treat the official 3.0.1 public package as the reference point rather than assuming that every experimental build has the same support status.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Project64’s latest public stable package is older than the current releases of Gopher64, RMG, and ares. That does not make it unusable, but it means you should not describe it as the universal current winner. A particular game, ROM hack, or old configuration guide may still make it the most convenient option for you.

Download it from the official Project64 release page, not from unofficial “optimized” or repacked download sites.

Choose Project64 if: you use Windows, prefer a familiar N64-only interface, or need compatibility with a title or mod built around older Project64 configurations.

5. ares — best for accuracy and preservation

ares is the strongest choice for readers who care about preservation, unusual hardware, development, and Nintendo 64DD support. It is a cross-platform, open-source multi-system emulator whose design prioritizes accuracy and code clarity, even when that costs some performance or convenience.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The project supports Nintendo 64 and Nintendo 64DD. Its latest listed release is v148, released May 30, 2026. The release notes mention N64 CPU and RSP JIT improvements, additional N64 implementation and accuracy work, Cubivore support, EEPROM timing and status-flag changes, initial Emux extension support, and VR4300 reverse-endian mode. See the official v148 release notes for the complete list.

Why ares stands out

  • It has a clear accuracy- and preservation-oriented philosophy.
  • It supports N64DD, an area many general-purpose recommendations omit.
  • It includes a built-in graphical interface while also providing useful command-line controls.
  • Its N64 compatibility database gives users a way to investigate individual titles.
  • It is valuable for homebrew developers and people testing hardware behavior rather than merely seeking the highest frame rate.

Ares documents the command-line form:

ares [options] game(s)

Useful documented options include:

--fullscreen
--pseudofullscreen
--kiosk
--system system
--shader shader
--setting name=value
--dump-all-settings
--no-file-prompt
--settings-file path
--save-state slot

--no-file-prompt can be useful when suppressing prompts for additional files, such as an optional 64DD disk. Ares’ documentation makes clear that some N64DD workflows involve more than selecting one cartridge file.

Limitations and warnings

  • Ares is not a cycle-accurate emulator. It is accuracy-focused, but it uses JIT and performance-oriented techniques. Do not use “cycle accurate” as a blanket description.
  • It trades speed for code clarity. Ares’ project documentation explicitly describes that design choice, and Windows can incur additional performance costs because of its ABI.
  • The current Windows release is unsigned. The v148 release notes say the signing certificate expired. Windows SmartScreen or other security checks may therefore show an additional warning. Download only from the official website or GitHub release page and verify that you obtained the intended file.
  • Transfer Pak support has limitations. A public Ares issue identifies support as currently limited to controller port 1, which matters for setups involving multiple Transfer Paks, such as Pokémon Stadium configurations.
  • It is not necessarily the easiest casual option. Its strengths are accuracy-oriented behavior, preservation, and special hardware—not the fewest clicks.

Choose ares if: you are interested in N64DD, preservation, homebrew development, or testing behavior where a project’s accuracy goals matter more than maximum convenience.

Which N64 emulator should you choose?

  • I want the easiest modern standalone option: Gopher64.
  • I want a polished Mupen64Plus GUI: RMG.
  • I already use RetroArch for other consoles: RetroArch with Mupen64Plus-Next first.
  • I use only Windows and prefer a familiar N64 interface: Project64.
  • I care most about accuracy, preservation, or N64DD: ares.
  • I want TAS tools and frame-by-frame experimentation: consider BizHawk instead of the general-purpose five. It focuses on recording, playback, debugging, frame stepping, rewinding, Lua and C# control, and tool-assisted speedruns.
  • I want cycle-accurate research rather than convenient gameplay: investigate CEN64. It aims to emulate the N64 down to register-transfer level, but it is an enthusiast and development project rather than the easiest everyday emulator.
  • I was considering Simple64: use Gopher64 unless you specifically need a legacy feature. Simple64’s official repository says development has stopped and future work moved to Gopher64.

What an N64 emulator is doing

An emulator reproduces a console’s hardware in software. The N64 is difficult to emulate well because its Reality Co-Processor, graphics pipeline, timing, memory behavior, custom microcode, audio processing, and accessories produce many game-specific edge cases.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The choice is not simply “fast versus accurate.” N64 projects commonly use a mixture of:

  • HLE, or high-level emulation: replacing some hardware behavior with a faster software approximation.
  • LLE, or low-level emulation: reproducing more hardware-level behavior, usually at a higher performance cost.
  • Hybrid approaches: combining high-level components with low-level graphics or RSP implementations.

This is why a game can display correctly in one emulator but show missing geometry, incorrect effects, audio problems, or timing issues in another. A project’s general reputation cannot replace testing the specific game, region, ROM revision, renderer, and accessory configuration you intend to use.

Setup basics

1. Download from the project’s official page

Use the official release pages linked above whenever possible. Avoid download portals that bundle emulators with installers, advertising software, modified executables, or old builds. Pay attention to whether you are downloading a stable release, nightly build, Windows package, Linux package, Apple Silicon Mac package, or Android APK.

2. Use game files you are legally entitled to use

Emulator software and game files are separate legal questions. Nintendo states that downloading unauthorized copies of its games is illegal, including copies commonly called ROMs. In the United States, the Copyright Office’s preservation exemptions are limited to defined circumstances involving eligible libraries, archives, museums, or qualifying restoration situations; they should not be reduced to “owning a cartridge makes downloading any ROM legal.” See Nintendo’s legal information and the U.S. Copyright Office exemptions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use emulators with game files you are legally entitled to use. Laws vary by country, and owning an original cartridge does not automatically make downloading a third-party ROM lawful. This is general information, not legal advice.

3. Check the ROM format

Common N64 ROM extensions include:

  • .z64
  • .n64
  • .v64

RetroArch’s Mupen64Plus-Next documentation also lists .bin, .u1, .ndd, and .gb for specific functionality. The extension alone does not prove that a file is a valid dump. Byte order, a damaged header, an incomplete dump, an unsupported archive, or a patched ROM hack can all prevent a game from loading.

Keep clean cartridge dumps separate from patched ROM hacks. If an emulator does not open a compressed archive, extract the actual ROM first. A 64DD disk image is not the same thing as an ordinary cartridge ROM.

4. Do you need a BIOS?

Most ordinary N64 cartridge games do not require you to hunt down a separate BIOS file. However, that is not a universal rule for every N64-related workflow. N64DD emulation may require IPL or firmware data and a disk image, depending on the emulator. CEN64 explicitly documents a required pifdata.bin, and its N64DD instructions require 64ddipl.bin plus a .ndd disk image. Ares likewise documents optional additional 64DD media prompts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not download random BIOS files from unofficial sites. Check the specific emulator’s documentation for the exact firmware name, region, format, and placement requirements.

5. Configure the controller before enabling enhancements

You can use a USB N64-style controller, a Bluetooth controller, a modern Xbox or PlayStation controller, or an original N64 controller connected through a compatible adapter. Map the N64 layout deliberately:

  • analog stick;
  • the four C buttons;
  • Z trigger;
  • A and B;
  • Start;
  • left and right shoulder buttons;
  • rumble, if the controller and adapter support it.

Adjust the analog dead zone and sensitivity if the stick drifts or feels too slow. Create per-game profiles when a title needs an unusual layout. An adapter that passes ordinary button input does not necessarily support rumble, Controller Pak, Memory Pak, Transfer Pak, or other accessories.

6. Start at native resolution

First confirm that the game runs correctly at its default or native internal resolution. Then enable internal-resolution scaling, widescreen options, texture packs, CRT shaders, and other enhancements one at a time. If a game breaks, you will know which change caused it.

Accessories, 64DD, and unusual games

Standard gamepad support is not the same as complete N64 hardware emulation. Before choosing an emulator for a specific title, consider whether you need:

  • Transfer Pak: important for Pokémon Stadium and Pokémon Stadium 2 when connecting Game Boy game data.
  • Controller Pak or Memory Pak: save and accessory behavior can vary by emulator and controller backend.
  • Rumble Pak: requires support from both the emulator and the physical controller or adapter.
  • N64 Mouse or VRU: unusual input devices may require special configuration.
  • Nintendo 64DD: requires disk images and, with some emulators, IPL or firmware data.

For accessory-heavy games, check current compatibility notes rather than selecting an emulator solely by its general reputation. The Ares compatibility database is useful for title-specific research, although Ares warns that some entries may still contain missed issues. RMG’s release notes also show why game-specific fixes matter: its current release includes work related to Pokémon Stadium’s Game Boy Tower.

Can saves move between emulators?

Sometimes, but not everything is equally portable.

  • In-game cartridge saves: often have the best chance of being converted or reused, provided the ROM filename, region, revision, save type, and format match.
  • Save states: generally are not portable between unrelated emulators or different core versions.
  • Controller Pak and Memory Pak data: may be stored separately and use emulator-specific formats.
  • Transfer Pak and Game Boy data: can require special handling and should not be assumed to transfer cleanly.
  • Configuration files: are usually specific to the emulator and installation.

Before switching:

  1. Stop playing and back up the entire save directory.
  2. Keep the original files untouched.
  3. Prefer in-game saves for long-term portability.
  4. Keep separate copies when testing another emulator.
  5. Never overwrite a working save with an experimental conversion.

If a save appears to disappear, check whether you changed the ROM filename, region, or revision. Also check whether a Flatpak sandbox, portable mode, or a different emulator changed the save location. Search backups and installation folders for extensions such as .srm, .eep, .fla, .mpk, and .sav, but do not rename files blindly.

Common problems and fixes

The game does not load

  1. Confirm that the file is an actual N64 ROM, not an incorrectly renamed archive.
  2. Extract it if the emulator does not support the archive format.
  3. Try a supported byte-order format such as .z64, .n64, or .v64.
  4. Check whether it is actually a 64DD disk image.
  5. Test a clean dump instead of a patched ROM hack.
  6. Verify that the file is not corrupted.
  7. Try another emulator before changing a large number of settings.

Black screen or missing geometry

Return to native resolution, disable shaders and texture packs, and test the default graphics renderer. Then try another graphics backend or RSP option, restart the emulator, update GPU drivers, and test a clean ROM. ROM hacks can depend on particular renderer behavior and may not work with the same settings as the original game.

Audio crackling can indicate that the emulator is not maintaining full speed, that the audio buffer is too small, or that synchronization or the audio backend is unsuitable. Increase the buffer where the emulator provides that option, return timing and synchronization settings to their defaults, disable demanding enhancements, and test another audio backend or emulator.

Controller buttons are wrong

Check the N64 layout rather than relying on Xbox or PlayStation button labels. Verify the analog axes, C buttons, Z trigger, dead zone, profile scope, and whether the configuration was saved globally or per game. Gopher64 provides default keyboard and Xbox-style mappings, while RMG provides a dedicated input configuration interface. An original controller adapter may expose only basic input and not its accessory features.

A save disappeared

Stop using the emulator and back up every save directory you can find. Check for a different ROM filename, region, revision, save directory, Flatpak sandbox path, or save-state location. Distinguish an in-game cartridge save from a save state. Restore from a backup before attempting conversion.

Other projects worth knowing

Mupen64Plus: the underlying modular emulator project remains important, but its official distribution is primarily a command-line frontend with plugins. Beginners will usually have an easier time with RMG or RetroArch.

BizHawk: a strong alternative for tool-assisted speedruns, frame stepping, recording, playback, debugging, rewinding, and Lua or C# control. It is not included in the five because its main purpose is broader emulation and TAS work rather than the simplest everyday N64 setup.

CEN64: an enthusiast and development project that aims to emulate the N64 down to register-transfer level. Its BIOS, 64DD, save-type, and command-line requirements make it better suited to research than casual play.

Simple64: treat it as legacy software. Its official repository says development has stopped and that the maintainer moved future work to Gopher64.

Final recommendation

For a new N64 setup, install Gopher64 first and test your legally obtained games at default settings. Use RMG if you prefer a detailed Mupen64Plus GUI, RetroArch if you want one frontend for many systems, and Project64 if you are committed to a familiar Windows workflow. Choose ares when N64DD, preservation, development, or accuracy-oriented behavior matters more than having the quickest casual setup.

Keep backups of your saves, change one graphics setting at a time, and check title-specific compatibility before concluding that an N64 game is broken. On this platform, the best emulator is often the one that matches the particular game, accessory, operating system, and level of configuration you actually need.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the easiest N64 emulator to use in 2026?

Gopher64 is the best general starting point for a modern standalone N64 emulator. It supports Windows, Linux, macOS ARM64, and Android, and includes features such as upscaling, shaders, cheats, save states, homebrew support, netplay, and RetroAchievements.

Which RetroArch core should I use for Nintendo 64 games?

Start with Mupen64Plus-Next. It incorporates Mupen64Plus, GLideN64, and ParaLLEl development work and is the most practical first choice for general use. Test ParaLLEl-based options when a particular game or renderer behaves better with them.

Do N64 emulators need a BIOS file?

Most ordinary N64 cartridge games do not require a separate BIOS file. N64DD and some preservation or accessory workflows can require additional IPL, firmware, or disk data. Check the official documentation for the emulator you choose.

Can I use the same N64 save with every emulator?

Ordinary cartridge saves are sometimes transferable, but save states usually are not. Transfer Pak data, Controller Pak data, filenames, regions, and save directories can also cause problems. Back up all saves and prefer in-game saves when moving between emulators.

Which N64 emulator is best for 64DD games?

ares is the strongest preservation-oriented choice because it supports Nintendo 64DD and documents the additional media involved. Project64 also supports N64DD. You may need a disk image and IPL or firmware data, so ordinary cartridge setup instructions do not necessarily apply.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Gopher64 is the best modern standalone choice for most players, RMG is the best Mupen64Plus GUI, RetroArch is the most flexible multi-system frontend, Project64 remains useful for Windows-focused users, and ares is the specialist choice for accuracy, preservation, and N64DD. Match the emulator to your platform and the game’s hardware requirements rather than expecting one universal winner.
