RTSS 7.3.7 is a free Windows utility for in-game FPS and frametime overlays, per-game frame-rate limits, statistics display, screenshots, and capture. The safest download route is the RTSS 7.3.7 Final page on Guru3D, which Guru3D identifies as its official hosting route. As of August 10, 2026, 7.3.7 is the latest publicly verifiable final release; it was listed on September 30, 2025.

RTSS is standalone software. It is not the same as MSI Afterburner, the older classic RivaTuner utility, or a GPU overclocking tool. RTSS supplies the overlay, frame limiter, application profiles, and related hook infrastructure, while MSI Afterburner can provide GPU and CPU sensor data for RTSS to display.

  • Version: 7.3.7 Final
  • Release/listing date: September 30, 2025
  • License: Freeware
  • Platform: Windows, with publisher-listed x86 and x64 support
  • Developer context: Guru3D / Unwinder

Do not download an installer from a search result that merely uses RivaTuner or RTSS in its name. Guru3D warns about spoofed and unrelated download sites. Use the Guru3D page above, or use the optional Windows Package Manager command below if you already trust and use WinGet.

What RTSS does

RivaTuner Statistics Server is best understood as an in-game presentation and statistics layer. It can:

  • Apply global or per-application frame-rate limits.
  • Maintain profiles for individual game executables.
  • Work with DirectX, OpenGL, and Vulkan applications, although compatibility varies by game, driver, launcher, overlay, and anti-cheat system.
  • Provide infrastructure for monitoring clients such as MSI Afterburner and other applications that send data to RTSS.
  • Support desktop and in-game screenshots and real-time video capture.
  • Offer advanced overlay layout and data-display features for benchmarking and custom overlays.

RTSS does not automatically expose every temperature, clock, voltage, or utilization sensor simply because it is installed. For detailed hardware readings, it normally receives data from a monitoring client such as MSI Afterburner or another supported provider.

RTSS versus MSI Afterburner versus classic RivaTuner

Software Primary role Is it required?
RTSS On-screen overlays, FPS and frametime statistics, per-game frame limiting, profiles, capture, and application hooks Required for RTSS features; standalone installation is possible
MSI Afterburner GPU overclocking, undervolting, fan curves, power and temperature limits, and hardware monitoring Not required for RTSS itself; commonly paired with it for sensor data
Classic RivaTuner An older NVIDIA graphics-card tweaking utility It is not the same product as modern RTSS

Confusion comes from RTSS having originated as a helper component for RivaTuner-based graphics utilities. Modern RTSS is primarily the statistics-server and overlay component. GPU tuning is chiefly an MSI Afterburner function, not an RTSS function. MSI’s Afterburner documentation explains that RTSS must be installed and running for Afterburner’s in-game hardware-monitoring OSD.

What changed in RTSS 7.3.7

The 7.3.7 release is more than a basic version-number update. Its most relevant changes fall into four groups.

Compatibility and rendering

  • Improved Vulkan hooking for applications that dynamically load vulkan-1.dll.
  • Improved handling of multiple third-party Vulkan layers.
  • Additional compatibility work for NVIDIA Smooth Motion frame generation, including alternate Direct3D 12 command-queue detection.
  • Improved handling of presentation calls from invisible windows.
  • A workaround for an EA App launcher issue affecting some older games, including Battlefield I and Battlefield V.
  • Improved Direct3D 11 compatibility with NVIDIA Reflex latency-marker injection.
  • More informative API labels for Vulkan and OpenGL applications using DXGI interoperability.

Overlay and OverlayEditor improvements

  • Sub-pixel-width bar-range graph rendering.
  • Rounded-corner bar rendering through the <B> hypertext tag.
  • The <FNT> hypertext tag for specifying fonts, sizes, and zoom behavior.
  • Horizontal and vertical overlay-centering options.
  • OverlayEditor selection shortcuts, layout merging, and a dark editor workspace option.
  • A Lock user settings option for overlay configurations.
  • Updated bundled DesktopOverlayHost components.
  • Built-in profiles for Counter-Strike 2 and Doom: The Dark Ages.

PresentMon, Reflex, and hardware-provider changes

These additions are most useful to benchmarkers and advanced overlay creators rather than someone who only wants a simple FPS counter:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • PresentMon V2 service and console support.
  • PresentMon V2 metrics and compatibility reconstruction for many earlier metrics.
  • Bundled custom PresentMon 2.3.1 console support for certain DLSS 4 and flip-metering scenarios.
  • New presentmonlatency() and presentmontimespan() functions.
  • New reflexlatency(), reflextimespan(), and reflextime() functions.
  • A new LibreHardwareMonitor data provider and string output support for external data sources.
  • Experimental monitoring support for AMD Ryzen 9000-series and Intel Arrow Lake CPUs.
  • Quad-fan monitoring for reference NVIDIA RTX 50-series graphics cards.

These features do not guarantee that every metric will be available on every game, GPU, driver, CPU, laptop, or graphics API. For dedicated frame-time capture and analysis, see PresentMon or a graphical tool such as CapFrameX.

Package details and optional verification

The current Microsoft WinGet manifest identifies the package as Guru3D.RTSS, version 7.3.7. It names the archive [Guru3D]-RTSSSetup737Build28314.zip and the installer inside it RTSSSetup737.exe. The installer is an NSIS/Nullsoft executable contained in a ZIP archive.

If you download that exact archive and want to compare its SHA-256 value with the manifest, open PowerShell in the download folder and run:

Get-FileHash '[Guru3D]-RTSSSetup737Build28314.zip' -Algorithm SHA256

The expected archive hash listed in the WinGet installer manifest is:

This is the hash for that specific ZIP archive in the WinGet manifest. It is not a universal hash for every extracted file, mirror, repack, or archive with a different name. Guru3D lists the download size as 15 MB, while secondary listings can show different archive or extracted-installer sizes, so file size alone is not an authenticity test.

Optional WinGet installation

Users who already have Windows Package Manager can request the exact package ID and version:

winget install --id Guru3D.RTSS --exact --version 7.3.7

The Microsoft WinGet manifest directory records the RTSS 7.3.7 package and release date. WinGet is convenient, but the Guru3D download page is the more transparent user-facing route because it takes you directly to the publisher’s listed download page rather than relying on a package-manager resolution.

Requirements and compatibility

Guru3D lists RTSS for Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10, and 11, with full administrative rights and a DirectX-, Vulkan-, or OpenGL-compatible graphics card. The older operating systems are the publisher’s listed compatibility range, not a recommendation to use obsolete or unsupported Windows versions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a current gaming PC, Windows 10 or Windows 11 is the practical target. RTSS is a Windows utility; it is not a native macOS or Linux application. Whether a particular overlay or sensor works depends on the game API, GPU vendor, graphics driver, laptop firmware, monitoring client, launch method, frame-generation technology, and anti-cheat software.

How to install RTSS 7.3.7 by itself

  1. Open the official Guru3D RTSS download page and choose the package identified as 7.3.7 Final.
  2. If the download is a ZIP file, extract it to a temporary folder. Do not try to run the installer from inside the compressed archive.
  3. Run RTSSSetup737.exe.
  4. Approve the Windows User Account Control prompt.
  5. Follow the installer prompts. The default installation folder is suitable for most users.
  6. Launch RTSS from the Start menu or let it remain available in the Windows system tray.

RTSS can be installed and used without MSI Afterburner. If you want an overlay containing GPU temperature, GPU utilization, GPU clock, CPU temperature, or similar sensor values, install and run a compatible monitoring client as well.

Installing it with MSI Afterburner

Choose this route if you also need GPU tuning, undervolting, power limits, fan curves, or Afterburner’s hardware-monitoring interface.

  1. Download Afterburner from MSI’s official Afterburner page or its Guru3D listing. MSI warns users about fake Afterburner websites.
  2. Start the Afterburner installer.
  3. Keep the RivaTuner Statistics Server component selected.
  4. Finish the installation and launch both Afterburner and RTSS.

Installing Afterburner does not turn RTSS into an overclocking tool. The two applications are complementary: Afterburner gathers or controls hardware settings, while RTSS commonly renders the resulting monitoring information in-game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to set up an in-game monitoring OSD

The following workflow uses MSI Afterburner as the sensor provider and RTSS as the OSD renderer:

  1. Open MSI Afterburner.
  2. Click Settings.
  3. Open the Monitoring tab.
  4. Select a metric, such as GPU temperature, GPU usage, GPU clock, GPU memory usage, CPU usage, CPU temperature, framerate, or frametime.
  5. Enable Show in On-Screen Display for that metric.
  6. Repeat for each value you want to see, then click Apply.
  7. Open RTSS to adjust the overlay position, appearance, and application-specific behavior.
  8. Start the game and check for the OSD.

Both applications need to remain running for an Afterburner-powered OSD. Sensor availability is not identical across desktop GPUs, laptops, drivers, firmware, and permissions.

FPS versus frametime

FPS is the number of frames delivered per second. Frametime is the duration of each frame, usually expressed in milliseconds. Average FPS can look healthy while frame delivery remains uneven, so a frametime readout or graph is often more useful when diagnosing hitching or stutter.

Remember that an overlay is software instrumentation. It can report useful render and presentation timing, but it is not the same as measuring total display latency with an external high-speed camera or dedicated latency equipment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to limit FPS with RTSS

RTSS can apply a global cap or a cap for one game. Per-game profiles are usually safer because they avoid changing unrelated applications.

  1. Open RTSS.
  2. Use the global profile for a system-wide limit, or click Add to create a profile.
  3. Browse to the game’s actual executable file, not merely its launcher. For a store game, this may require locating the installed game folder.
  4. Select the game profile in RTSS.
  5. Enter the target value in Framerate limit.
  6. Apply the setting.
  7. Restart the game if it was already running.

The exact layout and wording can vary slightly between RTSS builds and profile states. The important sequence is to select the correct executable, set the profile’s frame limit, and restart the application.

What an RTSS cap can and cannot do

A cap is useful when a game has no reliable limiter, when you want different limits for different executables, or when reducing excess GPU load, heat, fan noise, and power use matters. It may also improve frame pacing in some configurations.

It cannot automatically eliminate tearing, stutter, or input latency. The result depends on the game’s own limiter, V-Sync, variable-refresh-rate settings, driver behavior, display mode, frame-generation technology, and the selected cap. A built-in game limiter or driver-level limiter may be more compatible with a particular title or anti-cheat system.

Troubleshooting RTSS

The overlay does not appear

  1. Check that RTSS is running in the system tray.
  2. If the OSD uses Afterburner sensors, confirm that MSI Afterburner is also running.
  3. In Afterburner’s Monitoring tab, confirm each desired metric has Show in On-Screen Display enabled.
  4. In RTSS, confirm that the correct game executable has been added and selected.
  5. Check that OSD support has not been disabled for that profile.
  6. Temporarily turn off other overlays, monitoring tools, capture tools, and chat overlays.
  7. Restart the game after changing the profile.
  8. Test with a simple DirectX game before diagnosing a protected, unusual, Vulkan, or launcher-heavy title.

Choosing the launcher executable instead of the game executable is a common cause of a profile appearing to have no effect.

Another overlay conflicts with RTSS

RTSS can conflict with other OSD, monitoring, capture, chat, or injection tools. Guru3D documents incompatibilities with some third-party software, including examples such as XFire and Steam in-game chat.

Exit or disable competing overlays, test with only RTSS enabled, then restore tools one at a time. If the game works only without a global hook, use a per-application profile or leave RTSS disabled for that title.

The game crashes, stutters, or refuses to connect

  1. Exit RTSS completely from its system-tray menu.
  2. Run the game without RTSS and compare the result.
  3. If the problem disappears, disable the RTSS profile for that game.
  4. Re-enable only the FPS limiter or only the OSD to identify which feature triggers the problem.
  5. Avoid enabling experimental monitoring or overlay features globally when you do not need them.
  6. Check the game or anti-cheat vendor’s current overlay policy.

Some online games and anti-cheat systems restrict overlays or may refuse a connection while RTSS is active. This is title- and version-specific; it is not evidence that RTSS is universally unsafe or banned. Do not attempt to bypass anti-cheat protections. If the game works normally with RTSS closed, leave RTSS disabled for that game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Vulkan, DirectX 12, and frame-generation issues

Version 7.3.7 improves Vulkan hooking, DirectX 12 handling, EA App behavior, NVIDIA Smooth Motion compatibility, and Reflex marker support. Those are compatibility improvements, not universal guarantees. Multiple Vulkan layers, protected games, injected overlays, unusual launchers, and frame-generation systems can still prevent an OSD or limiter from working correctly.

When testing, use the simplest configuration first: disable competing overlays, test the game without frame generation, and enable RTSS features one at a time. Restore the original configuration after identifying the incompatible component.

Clean reinstall after an update breaks the overlay

Back up any profiles or custom overlay layouts before removing software. Then uninstall RTSS and, if relevant, MSI Afterburner, reboot Windows, and install the current packages again. Guru3D recommends a full uninstall that includes profile removal when an update has left the overlay broken, but deleting profiles can erase custom settings, so treat that as a recovery step rather than the first troubleshooting action.

RTSS alternatives and when to use them

Need Most suitable starting point
Just a basic FPS display The game’s built-in overlay, Steam overlay, NVIDIA software, AMD software, or RTSS
Custom OSD and per-game frame limits RTSS
GPU overclocking, undervolting, power limits, or fan curves MSI Afterburner, often used together with RTSS
Detailed frame-time and latency capture PresentMon, CapFrameX, NVIDIA FrameView, or a similar analysis tool
Driver-level AMD frame-rate targeting AMD Frame Rate Target Control, where supported
Avoiding third-party injection in an online game The game’s own limiter or a supported driver-level limiter

PresentMon is designed to capture and analyze CPU, GPU, display-frame durations, and latency across DirectX, OpenGL, and Vulkan on Windows. CapFrameX provides a graphical capture and analysis workflow built around PresentMon-based functionality.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AMD’s documented Frame Rate Target Control is a separate driver-level option for supported Radeon hardware. AMD currently documents support for RX 6000- and RX 7000-series GPUs, DirectX 9/10/11/12 and Vulkan titles, exclusive fullscreen mode, and a 30–200 FPS target range. Those details apply to AMD’s implementation and should not be treated as RTSS requirements or capabilities.

Why older download listings can be misleading

Secondary download sites can be useful for metadata, but they should not override the current Guru3D listing. TechSpot’s page reproduces much of the 7.3.7 information, yet its file-size information differs from Guru3D’s, which is one reason size alone should not be used to authenticate a package.

The SourceForge RivaTuner listing still identifies RTSSSetup736.exe as its latest file and shows a March 8, 2025 modification date. It is not evidence that 7.3.6 is the current final release. The current publicly verifiable final build is 7.3.7, listed by Guru3D and represented in the Microsoft WinGet manifest.

How to uninstall RTSS

  1. Close games and exit RTSS from the system tray.
  2. In Windows, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps or Apps & features on older Windows 10 builds.
  3. Find RivaTuner Statistics Server and choose Uninstall.
  4. If MSI Afterburner is also causing the problem, uninstall it separately; removing RTSS does not necessarily remove Afterburner.
  5. Restart Windows before reinstalling or testing the game again.

Back up profiles and custom overlay layouts before uninstalling if you may want to restore them later. If the goal is only to stop a conflict, disabling the RTSS profile for one game is less destructive than removing the entire installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is RTSS 7.3.7 free?

Yes. Guru3D lists RivaTuner Statistics Server 7.3.7 as freeware for Windows. It is not a paid trial, although users should download the unmodified package from Guru3D or use the matching WinGet package rather than an unknown repack.

Is RTSS the same as MSI Afterburner?

No. RTSS handles overlays, frame limiting, profiles, statistics, and related application hooks. MSI Afterburner handles GPU tuning and hardware monitoring. Afterburner can send sensor values to RTSS, but RTSS can be installed and used by itself.

Can RTSS show CPU and GPU temperatures without MSI Afterburner?

RTSS is primarily the display and statistics layer, so it does not automatically provide every sensor. MSI Afterburner or another compatible monitoring provider is normally needed for CPU and GPU temperature data. Available sensors vary by hardware, driver, firmware, and provider.

Does RTSS work with AMD and Intel graphics?

RTSS is intended for Windows applications using DirectX, Vulkan, and OpenGL, rather than being limited to one GPU brand. Actual overlay, limiter, and sensor behavior varies by GPU, driver, API, game, laptop configuration, and anti-cheat software, so compatibility should be tested per title.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does RTSS work with Vulkan and DirectX 12?

RTSS 7.3.7 includes compatibility improvements for Vulkan and DirectX 12, including work related to NVIDIA Smooth Motion and other presentation behavior. These improvements are not a guarantee that every Vulkan or DirectX 12 game, overlay combination, or frame-generation mode will work.

Why is the RTSS overlay missing?

Confirm that RTSS is running, that MSI Afterburner is running if it supplies the sensor data, and that each metric is marked Show in On-Screen Display under Afterburner’s Monitoring tab. Then check the correct game executable, profile OSD settings, competing overlays, and whether the game needs to be restarted.

Can RTSS cause anti-cheat problems?

Some games or anti-cheat systems may restrict overlays or refuse a connection while RTSS is active. This is specific to the title and anti-cheat version. Test the game with RTSS fully closed, disable the profile if necessary, and never try to bypass anti-cheat protections.

Is 7.3.7 the latest RTSS version?

As of August 10, 2026, 7.3.7 is the latest publicly verifiable final or stable release found in the Guru3D listing and Microsoft WinGet manifest. That statement does not rule out private, preview, or unreleased development builds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I download RTSS from SourceForge or another third-party website?

Use the Guru3D RTSS download page as the primary route. The current SourceForge listing still points to RTSS 7.3.6, and unrelated sites using RivaTuner branding may be spoofed or distribute tampered files. If you use the exact WinGet archive, its manifest also provides a SHA-256 value for comparison.

Can I install RTSS without MSI Afterburner?

Yes. Download the standalone RTSS package, extract it if necessary, run RTSSSetup737.exe, and complete the installer. Add MSI Afterburner or another monitoring client only if you need additional hardware sensor data or GPU tuning.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: RTSS 7.3.7 is the latest publicly verifiable final build as of August 10, 2026, and it remains a useful free Windows tool for custom in-game overlays and per-game FPS limits. Download it from Guru3D’s RTSS page, pair it with MSI Afterburner when you need hardware sensors, and disable it for games or anti-cheat systems that do not tolerate third-party overlays.
