Malenia, Blade of Miquella is an optional endgame Shardbearer and remembrance boss at the bottom of Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree. The fight has two phases: Malenia, Blade of Miquella and Malenia, Goddess of Rot.
Quick answer: Reach Malenia through the Consecrated Snowfield, Ordina, Miquella’s Haligtree, and Elphael. Her most dangerous mechanic is Waterfowl Dance, and she heals whenever one of her attacks connects—even against a shield. Avoid trading blows, keep a reliable Waterfowl answer ready, and use bleed, frost, stance pressure, ranged attacks, or a summon if they fit your build.

Spoiler warning: This guide covers Malenia’s base-game story, her rewards, Millicent’s quest, and lore added or clarified by Shadow of the Erdtree.
Who is Malenia, Blade of Miquella?
Malenia is the daughter of Queen Marika and Radagon, the younger twin sister of Miquella, and one of the Empyreans. Both twins were born as potential successors to Marika, but each carried a different affliction: Malenia was born with Scarlet Rot, while Miquella was cursed with eternal childhood.

Malenia became Miquella’s sworn blade and protector. That role is the meaning of her title: Blade of Miquella is a position of loyalty, not a separate weapon or transformation. She is also called Malenia the Severed, the one-armed valkyrie, and, in the second phase of the boss fight, Malenia, Goddess of Rot.
Her prosthetic limbs and golden war prosthesis are central to both her appearance and her history. The descriptions of Valkyrie’s Prosthesis and related items connect her missing limbs, her combat identity, and the people who sought to exploit or imitate her image.
Miquella tried to create solutions for both twins’ curses. His Unalloyed Gold Needle could suppress the influence of the Outer God associated with Scarlet Rot, but it did not permanently cure Malenia. After Miquella was taken by Mohg, Malenia remained at the Haligtree awaiting his return. The Malenia item and dialogue descriptions provide the strongest in-game evidence for this relationship.
Malenia is not Melina. They are separate characters despite their similar names.

Malenia is at the end of Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree, the fortified lower section of Miquella’s Haligtree. Her arena is beyond the Haligtree Roots Site of Grace. You must first pass through Miquella’s Haligtree and defeat Loretta, Knight of the Haligtree before reaching Elphael.
She is an optional remembrance boss. You do not need to defeat her to complete the standard main story or reach the ordinary ending choices.
How to reach Malenia
- Obtain the Haligtree Secret Medallion (Right). Find Albus in the Village of the Albinaurics and obtain the right half. The medallion description identifies it as part of the hidden route at the Grand Lift of Rold.
- Obtain the Haligtree Secret Medallion (Left). Travel to Castle Sol, defeat Commander Niall, and collect the left half from the upper area beyond the boss.
- Use the secret medallion at the Grand Lift of Rold. At the lift, choose the option to hoist the secret medallion rather than the ordinary Rold Medallion. This opens the route to the Consecrated Snowfield.
- Cross the Consecrated Snowfield. Visibility is poor in the central blizzard, so use landmarks, map fragments, and Sites of Grace to orient yourself.
- Reach Ordina, Liturgical Town. Enter the Evergaol in Ordina and light the four required flames. The town becomes dangerous in the Evergaol, with invisible assassins and archers able to interrupt the route.
- Use Ordina’s unlocked portal. Once all four flames are lit, the portal at the north side of town opens and takes you to Miquella’s Haligtree.
- Traverse Miquella’s Haligtree. The early section is built around large branches and narrow platforms. Continue downward and defeat Loretta, Knight of the Haligtree.
- Descend into Elphael. Follow the fortress-city below the Haligtree until you reach the Haligtree Roots Site of Grace.
- Enter the boss chamber. The fog gate beyond Haligtree Roots leads to Malenia.
The Miquella’s Haligtree area information and Elphael layout are useful if you lose the route after Ordina. The most common mistake is finding the Grand Lift of Rold but trying to use the ordinary medallion option; the hidden Haligtree path requires both secret halves.

For current-version context, Bandai Namco’s official news index lists Version 1.16.1, released August 21, 2025, as the latest listed base-game patch as of August 10, 2026. Its notes describe bug fixes and do not list a Malenia-specific balance change. This guide therefore applies to the current official base-game version identified in the Version 1.16.1 patch notes, while practical behavior can still differ with Journey level, co-op scaling, multiplayer corrections, or a later regulation update. The phase 2 figure should not be read as a completely separate full health bar. Phase 2 begins after the first bar is depleted, displays a reduced starting health amount, and still interacts with Malenia’s healing mechanic. The published figures and defenses are summarized in the community boss data table.
The mechanic that makes Malenia different: healing on hit
Malenia regains HP whenever one of her attacks successfully connects with the player. This includes hits absorbed by a shield. Blocking can prevent immediate damage, but it does not prevent Malenia from recovering health.
This is why the fight punishes trading more severely than most Elden Ring bosses. If you block a long combo, Malenia may survive the exchange with much of the damage you dealt restored. A shield can still be useful against an individual attack or as an emergency buffer, but it is not a free answer to her pressure.

The practical rule is simple: avoid damage whenever possible, then punish reliable recovery windows. Do not measure a successful defense only by whether your HP went down. Also ask whether Malenia gained health.
How to prepare for the fight
There is no mandatory Malenia build. Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Faith, Arcane, shields, ranged weapons, parries, Spirit Ashes, status effects, and challenge-run setups can all work. The right preparation depends on whether your goal is a first clear, an efficient kill, a fair duel, or a restriction such as no summons or no status effects.

Useful preparation criteria
- Use a strongly upgraded weapon. Malenia is an endgame boss, so entering with an under-upgraded weapon makes every mistake more expensive.
- Prioritize Vigor. You should ideally survive at least one mistake, especially while learning Waterfowl Dance. The commonly quoted level range of 120–150 is community convention, not an in-game requirement.
- Keep a mobile equip load. Medium or light load is generally more comfortable for players who rely on rolling and sprinting. Heavy load makes distance management harder.
- Reserve stamina for emergencies. Waterfowl often requires a sustained sprint followed by several defensive actions. Do not spend your entire stamina bar attacking just before she rises.
- Prepare for Scarlet Rot. Carry Preserving Boluses or another reliable cleansing plan for phase 2. Rot resistance can reduce the danger, but it does not replace learning the attacks.
- Have a Waterfowl answer before entering the fog. This can be spacing, practiced close-range evasion, Bloodhound’s Step, Quickstep, Freezing Pots, a ranged interruption, or a strategy built around killing her before the move is likely to occur.
- Prefer bleed or frost over Poison or Scarlet Rot for status pressure. Malenia’s resistance to Poison and Rot is high, while bleed and frost are generally more practical. Neither status is mandatory.
- Consider fire carefully. The published table lists no fire damage negation. Fire can also reset Frostbite after it triggers, but this does not mean Malenia has a scripted fire weakness.
- Be cautious with slow weapons. Heavy attacks can deal excellent stance damage, but only use them in recovery windows you understand. A slow swing that trades with her is often a losing exchange.
Choose a strategy that matches your goal

Spirit Ashes and co-op
Spirit Ashes are allowed in this fight. A summon can draw Malenia’s attention and create safe attack or healing windows, but it can also make her change targets unpredictably. A summon that repeatedly stands in front of her and trades hits may restore a large amount of her HP.
For this reason, a summon that staggers, attacks from range, or avoids prolonged trades can be more useful than one that simply absorbs attention. Upgrade the Spirit Ash if you intend to rely on it, and watch whether it is actually creating openings or merely giving Malenia free healing.
Players also use the word solo inconsistently. Distinguish between no human co-op but Spirit Ash allowed, no summons of any kind, and no summons or status effects. Online co-op additionally changes boss scaling and can make Waterfowl targeting less predictable.
Phase 1 strategy
Phase 1 is primarily a fast sword duel. Malenia uses quick horizontal slashes, lunges, thrusts, a grab, a kick, delayed rapid-slash strings, jumping attacks, and Waterfowl Dance.
Do not attack every time she appears to pause. Some wind-ups can be staggered, but others have hyperarmor or cannot be safely challenged. Learn which attacks leave her committed and punish the recovery rather than trying to interrupt every animation.
Basic phase 1 rules
- Stay near the center when possible. Walls and corners remove the space needed to run from Waterfowl and make camera control less reliable.
- Do not chase every retreat. Malenia can turn a greedy approach into a lunge, grab, or sudden combo.
- React to the grab. When she reaches forward, evade rather than trying to win a trade.
- Treat delayed slashes as timing tests. Rolling on the first visual cue can leave you vulnerable to the delayed follow-up.
- Punish the end of strings. One or two safe hits are usually more valuable than a full combo that gives her a chance to retaliate.
- Use status or stance pressure deliberately. Bleed, frost, repeated heavy attacks, and coordinated attacks can create valuable openings, but do not pursue a proc through an unsafe animation.
Waterfowl Dance: how to survive Malenia’s signature attack
Waterfowl Dance is a sequence of rapid slashing bursts that tracks the player across the arena. The correct response depends heavily on the distance between you and Malenia when she starts. A dodge sequence that works from the opposite side of the arena may fail at point-blank range.

- Sprint directly away as soon as Malenia rises into the starting animation.
- Keep running through the first burst rather than panic-rolling immediately.
- Roll away or diagonally from the second burst as it reaches you.
- For the final burst, roll toward or through the attack instead of continuing to roll backward.
- Wait until the final hitbox has ended before approaching. The apparent recovery can still contain a dangerous slash.
This far-distance response works because sprinting denies the first burst enough contact time for the attack to catch you. Stamina management and arena position matter as much as the roll timing.
At midrange
Midrange is awkward because Malenia can cover the gap while the first burst begins. If you see the startup early, immediately create as much distance as possible and transition into the far-range response. If you are too close for that, do not assume that simply rolling backward will work; use a practiced close-range option or an emergency counter.
At close range
Point-blank Waterfowl is the least forgiving version. There is no single directional input that works in every camera angle, position, frame-rate condition, or patch behavior. Options include:
- Practice a close-range circling-and-roll technique that moves around Malenia during the opening burst, then roll through the later bursts.
- Use Bloodhound’s Step or Quickstep if your build permits it and you are comfortable spending the FP or stamina.
- Keep a Freezing Pot ready and throw it during the startup.
- Create distance before reaching the health range at which you expect her to use the attack.
- Stop attacking during uncertain recovery windows so you have stamina available to sprint or evade.
Close-range evasion is worth practicing separately from the rest of the fight. If you are learning it during an otherwise successful attempt, camera lock, wall placement, stamina, and Malenia’s target direction can make the result look random.

A Freezing Pot can interrupt Waterfowl Dance if it applies Frostbite during the attack’s startup. The recipe comes from Glintstone Craftsman’s Cookbook [6], found in Caria Manor. Each pot requires:
- 1 Empty Ritual Pot
- 2 Rimed Crystal Buds
The pot must hit early enough in the startup to trigger Frostbite. It is not an unlimited or permanently reliable counter: Malenia’s frost resistance rises after applications, and the technique becomes less dependable after repeated uses, in co-op, or under different Journey conditions. Fire damage can reset Frostbite, but repeatedly alternating fire and frost is not a guaranteed solution.
Use Freezing Pots as an emergency tool and part of a broader plan, not as a replacement for spacing. The Freezing Pot information covers the interruption behavior and crafting limitations.
Phase 2: Malenia, Goddess of Rot
After phase 1 is depleted, a cutscene plays and Malenia returns as Malenia, Goddess of Rot. The phase retains her healing mechanic, ordinary sword attacks, and Waterfowl Dance while adding Scarlet Rot buildup, Scarlet Aeonia, rot-based aerial attacks, and Scarlet Phantom projections.

Surviving the Scarlet Aeonia opener
The opening Scarlet Aeonia is scripted. When Malenia launches upward, sprint away or diagonally away from the descent. Avoid the impact and the expanding flower cloud; running directly into the bloom to reach her is usually a mistake.
After the flower forms, wait for the damaging cloud to clear enough for a safe approach. The long recovery afterward is one of the best opportunities in the fight for a ranged attack, spell, weapon skill, heal, or carefully timed approach. Do not spend the entire opening recovery standing in Scarlet Rot just to land one extra hit.
Scarlet Phantoms
During the phantom attack, Malenia hovers and releases projections that strike in sequence before the real Malenia dives. A useful response is:
- Run away from the initial projection.
- Watch the spacing between phantoms instead of rolling continuously.
- Dodge each phantom as it reaches you.
- Keep stamina for Malenia’s final real dive.
The visual effects make it difficult to identify the final attack. Treat the move as a sequence of timed threats rather than one large animation and avoid attacking until the real Malenia has finished.
What changes in phase 2?
- Scarlet Rot becomes a constant hazard. Rot buildup comes from several attacks and from the lingering flower cloud.
- Aerial attacks are more dangerous. Scarlet Plunge and related attacks cover space quickly and punish players who remain beneath her.
- Waterfowl remains available. Be prepared for it even after learning the phase 2 opener.
- Familiar sword strings are enhanced. Continue waiting for recoveries instead of assuming the phase transition creates a free melee turn.
- Distance management matters more. Phase 2 gives you more reasons to disengage, cleanse, and re-enter on your terms.
Damage types, status effects, and defensive choices
Malenia is not defined by one elemental weakness. Community data lists fire damage negation as 0, but that is best understood as a favorable damage matchup rather than a scripted weakness. Holy is heavily resisted at the reported value of 40, while magic and lightning are less favorable than physical or fire in the same table.
Bleed and Frost are generally effective because their burst damage and status pressure can shorten the number of neutral exchanges you need to win. Poison and Scarlet Rot are usually poor primary plans because Malenia has high resistance to both. It is possible to defeat her with them, but building around Rot specifically because she is the Goddess of Rot is inefficient.
Shields are a special case. They can help you survive a single attack, but every successful hit against the shield can still heal her. A shield-focused strategy must account for that exchange rather than assuming it has negated the mechanic.
Rewards for defeating Malenia
On a standard first Journey, Malenia awards:
- 480,000 Runes
- Malenia’s Great Rune
- Remembrance of the Rot Goddess
The victory also unlocks the hidden Shardbearer Malenia achievement or trophy: 30 Gamerscore on Xbox and a Silver trophy on PlayStation. See the achievement and trophy listing for the platform classification.
Malenia’s Great Rune
Restore the Great Rune at the Isolated Divine Tower. The tower is reached through the Sending Gate connected to the Divine Bridge in Leyndell; the Isolated Divine Tower guide explains the route.
Once restored and equipped with a Rune Arc, Malenia’s Great Rune:
- Reduces the healing received from Crimson Tears.
- Allows attacks made shortly after taking damage to recover part of your HP.
This is a specialized aggressive-play Great Rune. It can reward a player who consistently retaliates after getting hit, but the reduced Crimson Tears healing makes it a niche choice rather than a universally strong defensive rune.
Remembrance of the Rot Goddess
Take the Remembrance to Finger Reader Enia at Roundtable Hold. It can be exchanged for either Hand of Malenia or Scarlet Aeonia. You can also consume it for Runes or duplicate it through the appropriate Remembrance duplication system. The available exchange options are listed in the Remembrance of the Rot Goddess entry.
Hand of Malenia
Hand of Malenia is a unique katana with these important properties:
- Requires 16 Strength and 48 Dexterity.
- Has innate 50 Bleed buildup.
- Uses the unique Waterfowl Dance skill.
- Cannot be buffed with spells or consumables.
- Cannot have its skill or affinity changed.
It is primarily a Dexterity weapon and has strong thematic value even when another katana better suits your stats, ash-of-war preferences, or buff setup. The Hand of Malenia details cover its requirements and upgrade restrictions.

Scarlet Aeonia
Scarlet Aeonia is a remembrance incantation that:
- Requires 35 Faith.
- Costs 56 FP.
- Uses three memory slots.
- Creates a giant flower that explodes and inflicts Scarlet Rot.
Its large area and long casting commitment make positioning essential. A boss remembrance spell is not automatically powerful in every encounter, and Scarlet Aeonia can be difficult to use safely when enemies are mobile or aggressive. Its description says that the third bloom would make Malenia a true goddess, which is important both mechanically and for interpreting her story. The flower after the fight
A large Scarlet Aeonia remains in Malenia’s arena after victory. It does not automatically give you every post-fight reward. To interact with it, you must have completed the relevant part of Millicent’s quest, retrieved the Unalloyed Gold Needle, and defeated Malenia.

Scarlet Rot and the Outer God
Malenia’s Scarlet Rot is more than an ordinary status ailment. It is tied to an Outer God of Rot, and the rot has an almost agent-like role in her story: it seeks to bloom through Malenia and transform her into a goddess while Malenia and Miquella attempt to resist, suppress, or redirect that destiny.
The evidence includes the Blue Dancer and blind swordsman material, Scarlet Aeonia’s bloom prophecy, Malenia’s Great Rune, Miquella’s Unalloyed Gold Needle, the worship of the Kindred of Rot, and the Cleanrot Knights’ willingness to fight beside Malenia despite their bodies gradually putrefying. However, the game does not establish a simple mind-control explanation. It is safer to describe the Outer God as an influence and affliction that presses toward transformation, not as a force that directly controls every one of Malenia’s decisions. The Outer God of Rot material gathers the relevant evidence.
The blind swordsman
Before becoming the figure seen beneath the Haligtree, Malenia encountered a blind swordsman who had sealed away an Outer God of Rot. He taught her a flowing sword style associated with water and movement. This is an important contrast in her character: Malenia’s martial identity began as a form of resistance to the rot, not as an uncomplicated embrace of it.

Miquella’s plan and Malenia’s loyalty
Miquella’s Haligtree was intended as a refuge and an alternative to the Golden Order. Miquella also developed Unalloyed Gold to protect against divine and outer influences, including Malenia’s Scarlet Rot. His disappearance at Mohg’s hands left Malenia waiting at the Haligtree, where she remained loyal to the brother she had sworn to protect.
The story does not require Miquella to be wholly benevolent. His plans involve compassion, control, ambition, and unanswered questions. What is clear is that Malenia’s identity is inseparable from her role as Miquella’s blade and from the effort to resist the fate imposed on both twins.
The Battle of Aeonia
After the Shattering, Malenia and General Radahn fought in Caelid. The battle ended without a clear victor. At its climax, Malenia released Scarlet Rot through the Scarlet Aeonia, devastating Caelid and leaving Radahn infected, mentally degraded, and wandering the battlefield.
Finlay, one of Malenia’s Cleanrot Knights, carried her back to the Haligtree while she was in a coma. This explains the connection between the Swamp of Aeonia, Malenia’s absence from the battlefield, and her eventual presence beneath the Haligtree. The Cleanrot Knights continued to serve her even as the rot consumed them; their armor description preserves that loyalty in the game’s item text. The Cleanrot Armor entry provides the relevant evidence, while the Starscourge Radahn material covers the battle’s aftermath.
What the DLC adds about Radahn and Miquella
Shadow of the Erdtree adds an important clue in the description of Young Lion’s armor. It says that when Malenia caused the rot flower to bloom in Aeonia, Radahn heard a whisper:
“Miquella awaits thee, O promised consort.”
This confirms a connection between the battle at Aeonia and Miquella’s intended consort. It does not explicitly establish that:
- Radahn agreed to the arrangement.
- Malenia attacked Radahn specifically to force him to accept.
- Miquella directly ordered the battle.
- Radahn’s vow was voluntary.
- Malenia knew the complete plan.
Those points remain interpretations. The clue is substantial, but it is not a complete account of the battle or of Radahn’s consent. The relevant DLC item text is preserved in the Young Lion’s Greaves entry.
The three blooms and the Goddess of Rot
The game deliberately creates an unresolved tension around Malenia’s transformation. The Scarlet Aeonia description says the flower has bloomed twice, that each bloom advances Malenia’s rot, and that the third bloom will make her a true goddess.

Several events matter:
- The first major bloom is the one that devastated Caelid.
- A major Scarlet Aeonia appears during the phase 2 transition.
- A large flower remains in the arena after Malenia is defeated.
- The phase 2 boss title is already Malenia, Goddess of Rot.
The game does not unambiguously explain whether the post-fight flower counts as the third bloom, whether the phase 2 transformation is complete godhood, or whether the title describes a thematic or provisional state. It is accurate to say that Malenia becomes the Goddess of Rot in the phase title and that the lore strongly points toward an advancing transformation. It is not accurate to present the exact bloom count as settled fact.
Millicent and the Scarlet Valkyries
Millicent and her sisters are strongly associated with Malenia’s Scarlet Rot and are framed as Scarlet Valkyries or related offshoots. The game does not provide an ordinary biological-parentage explanation. They may be understood as manifestations, buds, or descendants of Malenia’s rot, but calling them definitively her biological daughters goes beyond what the text establishes.
This distinction matters because descriptions and dialogue use imagery such as daughters, buds, and offshoots in ways that support multiple readings. The Scarlet Valkyrie material is evidence for the association, not a definitive family tree.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Do not rely on blocking Waterfowl. Malenia heals from hits against shields.
- Do not treat bleed as mandatory. It is efficient, not required.
- Do not build around Scarlet Rot just because she uses it. Her high resistance makes it a poor primary plan.
- Do not use one Waterfowl dodge at every distance. Far, midrange, and point-blank starts require different responses.
- Do not assume phase 2 is a wholly separate full health bar. The transition follows phase 1 depletion and displays a reduced starting amount.
- Do not treat Goddess of Rot as an answer to the three-bloom question. The title and the item description create an intentional ambiguity.
- Do not treat the DLC clue as proof of every Radahn theory. It connects the characters but does not settle motive or consent.
- Do not expect Miquella’s Needle automatically. The Millicent quest steps, Unalloyed Gold Needle, Malenia’s defeat, and post-fight flower interaction are all relevant.
- Do not mistake community level advice for a requirement. Level 120–150 is a convention, not an official rule.

Is Malenia required to finish Elden Ring?
No. Malenia is an optional remembrance boss and Shardbearer. You can complete the standard main story and ending routes without defeating her.

Level 120–150 is a common community range for a first attempt, but it is not an official requirement. Weapon upgrade level, Vigor, stamina, build familiarity, and your Waterfowl strategy matter more than a fixed character level.
What is Malenia weak to?
Bleed and Frost are generally useful because she has lower resistance to them than to Poison and Scarlet Rot. The published standard-Journey data lists fire negation as 0, but that is not the same as a scripted elemental weakness. Holy is heavily resisted. Malenia can still be defeated with every major build category.
Does Malenia heal when you block?
Yes. Her attacks can restore HP when they connect with a shield. Blocking can prevent immediate damage, but repeatedly blocking her combos may give back much of the damage you inflicted.
Can Freezing Pots stop Waterfowl Dance?
A Freezing Pot can interrupt Waterfowl during its startup if it applies Frostbite early enough. Malenia’s frost resistance rises after applications, so the technique is a limited emergency counter rather than a guaranteed answer for the entire fight.
Can I use Spirit Ashes against Malenia?
Yes. Spirit Ashes can create openings by drawing aggro, but a summon that repeatedly trades hits may heal Malenia substantially. A ranged, stagger-focused, or less trade-heavy summon can be more useful than one that simply stands in front of her.
Which reward should I choose from Malenia’s Remembrance?
Choose Hand of Malenia if you want a Dexterity katana with innate bleed and Waterfowl Dance. Choose Scarlet Aeonia if you want a high-Faith, three-memory-slot Scarlet Rot incantation. You can also consume or duplicate the Remembrance, depending on your collection goals.
How do I get Miquella’s Needle?
Complete the relevant part of Millicent’s quest, retrieve the Unalloyed Gold Needle, defeat Malenia, and interact with the large Scarlet Aeonia that remains in her arena. The flower can also provide a Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone.

No. Malenia and Melina are separate characters. Their similar names are a common source of search confusion, but they have different identities, roles, and storylines.
Does Shadow of the Erdtree explain why Malenia fought Radahn?
