NVIDIA’s DLSS 4.5 Came to Your Old GPU—Here’s What RTX 20/30 Cards Can Use

RTX 20- and 30-series GPUs can use DLSS 4 and 4.5's newer reconstruction models, DLAA and Ray Reconstruction, but not Frame Generation or Multi Frame Generation. Here is how to enable the upgrade, verify it, and choose between Presets K, M and L.

Yes—but only part of DLSS 4 and DLSS 4.5 came to older RTX graphics cards. GeForce RTX 20- and 30-series GPUs can use the newer DLSS Super Resolution models, Ray Reconstruction, and DLAA. They do not support official DLSS Frame Generation, Multi Frame Generation, Dynamic Multi Frame Generation, or 6X mode.

The important distinction is that DLSS is a collection of technologies, not one feature controlled by one switch. As of August 2026, the useful upgrade for an RTX 2060, RTX 3060, RTX 3080, or similar card is better AI image reconstruction—not the RTX 50-series frame-generation stack.

The short version

  • RTX 20 and RTX 30: DLSS Super Resolution, the first-generation transformer model, DLSS 4.5’s second-generation Super Resolution models, Ray Reconstruction, and DLAA.
  • RTX 20 and RTX 30 do not get: DLSS Frame Generation, Multi Frame Generation, Dynamic Multi Frame Generation, or 6X mode.
  • Best starting point for older cards: use Preset K. Test Preset M in Performance mode if you have GPU headroom and prefer image quality over frame rate. Use Preset L mainly for Ultra Performance at 4K.
  • How to enable it: open NVIDIA App, go to Graphics → Program Settings, select the game, then change DLSS Override – Model Presets under Driver Settings.
  • How to check it worked: open the NVIDIA overlay with Alt+Z and go to Statistics → Statistics View → DLSS.

If you saw older coverage saying that DLSS 4 was either entirely exclusive to RTX 50 or universally available to every RTX card, both versions leave out the feature-by-feature compatibility that matters.

DLSS 4 and 4.5 compatibility by GPU generation

This is the practical compatibility matrix. The entries describe the feature itself, not whether every game supports it. A game still needs a compatible DLSS integration, and some newer overrides are title-specific. NVIDIA maintains a current DLSS games and applications list showing where its overrides have been verified.

Ray Reconstruction updates can have a separate rollout from Super Resolution. NVIDIA announced a DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction rollout for August 2026, but availability can still depend on the title, driver, NVIDIA App version, and the status shown on its live compatibility list. Do not assume that every game with ordinary Ray Reconstruction automatically has the latest DLSS 4.5 version.

What DLSS 4 actually means

The name DLSS 4 covers several different systems:

  • Super Resolution: the game renders at a lower internal resolution, then DLSS reconstructs a higher-resolution image using motion data, previous frames, and a trained neural model. This is the part most RTX 20/30 owners will use.
  • DLAA: DLSS reconstruction at native resolution. It is aimed at improving anti-aliasing and image quality rather than increasing performance, so it generally does not provide the same frame-rate benefit as upscaling.
  • Ray Reconstruction: a neural replacement for conventional ray-tracing denoisers. It reconstructs noisy ray-traced lighting, reflections, and other effects from fewer samples.
  • Frame Generation: creates an additional synthetic frame between conventionally rendered frames. NVIDIA officially supports DLSS Frame Generation on RTX 40- and RTX 50-series GPUs, not RTX 20 or RTX 30.
  • Multi Frame Generation: DLSS 4 can generate up to three additional frames for each traditionally rendered frame. It is an RTX 50-series feature.
  • Dynamic Multi Frame Generation and 6X: these DLSS 4.5 frame-generation modes are also RTX 50-only.

That is why the statement that DLSS 4 works on all RTX cards is only accurate when it refers to Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction, and DLAA. It is not accurate for the complete DLSS 4 feature set.

What older RTX cards gained: the transformer model

The meaningful DLSS 4 upgrade for RTX 20 and 30-series owners is the move from older convolutional neural-network reconstruction models to transformer-based models. NVIDIA describes the newer architecture in its DLSS 4 research documentation as a model that processes spatial and temporal information differently from the older approach.

In games with a good implementation, the transformer model can improve:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Temporal stability during movement.
  • Ghosting behind moving objects.
  • Fine-detail retention in motion.
  • Thin edges and disocclusion—the areas revealed when an object or camera moves away.
  • Foliage, particles, hair, cloth, reflections, and other difficult temporal details.
  • Ray-traced image quality when the title’s Ray Reconstruction path is also working correctly.

The improvement is not guaranteed to look the same in every game. DLSS has to work with the motion vectors, depth data, exposure handling, anti-aliasing, and other information supplied by each title. A model override can improve an old integration, but it cannot repair every game-specific artifact.

You may see older references to DLSS 4’s first transformer model using different internal preset labels, including J or K. The current practical choice exposed through NVIDIA App is usually K for the first-generation transformer model, with M and L representing the newer DLSS 4.5 second-generation Super Resolution options.

What DLSS 4.5 changes for RTX 20/30

DLSS 4.5 adds a second-generation transformer model for Super Resolution, an updated Frame Generation model, Dynamic Multi Frame Generation, and 6X mode. Only the second-generation Super Resolution model is relevant to RTX 20/30 owners.

The catch is performance. NVIDIA says RTX 40- and RTX 50-series GPUs benefit from native FP8 support, while RTX 20- and RTX 30-series cards do not. As a result, DLSS 4.5 Models M and L can require substantially more GPU work on an older card. NVIDIA specifically says RTX 20/30 users may prefer Model K for the best balance of image quality and performance. See NVIDIA’s DLSS 4.5 model and preset guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In other words, DLSS 4.5 is not automatically a free upgrade. It can produce a cleaner or more stable image in a particular scene, but its reconstruction cost can consume some—or all—of the performance benefit gained by rendering at a lower resolution.

Which DLSS preset should an RTX 20/30 owner use?

GPU and mode Recommended starting point What to watch for
RTX 20/30 with DLAA Preset K Compare image stability and frame time; DLAA is quality-focused rather than an upscaling performance mode.
RTX 20/30 with Quality or Balanced Preset K M may look different, but the extra cost is usually difficult to justify when the game is already GPU-limited.
RTX 20/30 with Performance Start with K; test M M can improve fine detail and motion stability, but keep it only if the visual improvement is worth the FPS and frame-time cost.
RTX 20/30 with Ultra Performance at 4K Compare K and L L is intended mainly for the very low internal resolution used by Ultra Performance and can carry a substantial overhead on older cards.
RTX 40/50 with Quality or Balanced Recommended, then test NVIDIA’s Recommended mapping generally retains K for these modes, though the exact available choices depend on the title.
RTX 40/50 with Performance Recommended or M NVIDIA maps Recommended to M for Performance mode.
Any RTX GPU with Ultra Performance Recommended or L NVIDIA maps Recommended to L for Ultra Performance, but benchmarking K and L can still be worthwhile.

NVIDIA’s current Recommended mapping is M for Performance, L for Ultra Performance, and K for the remaining modes. Recommended does not mean that every mode is forced to DLSS 4.5; on Quality, Balanced, and DLAA it can retain Preset K.

A simple rule for older cards

Use K as your baseline. Test M when you are using Performance mode, playing at a high resolution, and have enough GPU headroom to absorb the extra inference cost. Treat L as a specialist option for Ultra Performance at 4K, not as the universally superior preset.

How to enable the newer DLSS model in NVIDIA App

The NVIDIA App override updates a compatible game’s existing DLSS integration. It does not add DLSS to a game that only supports AMD FSR, Intel XeSS, or no temporal upscaler at all.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install the latest version of NVIDIA App.
  2. Install the latest GeForce Game Ready or Studio driver.
  3. Close the game. Closing it before changing the override is the safest procedure, even if a newer App version appears to apply some settings while a game is open.
  4. Open NVIDIA App.
  5. Open Graphics.
  6. Choose Program Settings to configure one game, or Global Settings to apply the setting to compatible games generally.
  7. Select the game. If it is not shown, use the option to add or locate the installed program manually.
  8. Scroll to Driver Settings.
  9. Find DLSS Override – Model Presets.
  10. Choose Recommended, or manually select K, M, or L when those choices are available.
  11. Click Apply.
  12. Launch or relaunch the game.
  13. In the game’s own graphics settings, enable DLSS Super Resolution, DLAA, or Ray Reconstruction as appropriate.

The in-game menu may continue to show only DLSS Quality, Balanced, or Performance. Those labels control the internal rendering scale. The NVIDIA App preset override selects the reconstruction model separately.

How to force DLAA, Ultra Performance, or a custom scale

Some compatible games expose DLSS Super Resolution but omit one or more modes from their graphics menu. NVIDIA App can provide a Super Resolution mode override where the title supports it.

  1. Enable DLSS Super Resolution in the game first.
  2. Exit the game.
  3. In NVIDIA App, go to Graphics → Program Settings and select the title.
  4. Under Driver Settings, find DLSS Override – Super Resolution Mode, or the similarly named Super Resolution override. The exact label can vary between NVIDIA App releases.
  5. Select DLAA, Ultra Performance, or a custom scale if the option is available.
  6. Apply the setting and relaunch the game.

NVIDIA’s custom scaling controls can range from 33% to 100% of the display resolution:

  • 100%: DLAA-style native-resolution reconstruction.
  • Approximately 67%: DLSS Quality.
  • 50%: DLSS Performance.
  • 33%: DLSS Ultra Performance.

These percentages describe the internal render scale, not a guaranteed frame-rate multiplier. The actual result varies with resolution, ray tracing, game engine, and whether the processor or graphics card is the limiting component. NVIDIA documents the override and custom-scaling process in its DLSS override support instructions.

How to verify which model is active

  1. Launch the game with the override applied.
  2. Press Alt+Z to open the NVIDIA overlay.
  3. Go to Statistics.
  4. Open Statistics View.
  5. Find the DLSS entry.

The overlay should identify the active DLSS model or preset. This check matters because the game’s menu can still say DLSS Quality even when NVIDIA App has selected a different reconstruction model behind the scenes.

Why RTX 20/30 cards do not get Frame Generation

No official DLSS Frame Generation on RTX 20/30

RTX 20- and RTX 30-series cards do not receive NVIDIA’s DLSS Frame Generation simply by installing a newer driver or replacing a DLSS file. NVIDIA’s current compatibility information limits official DLSS Frame Generation to RTX 40 and RTX 50, while Multi Frame Generation, Dynamic Multi Frame Generation, and 6X are RTX 50-only.

This is a feature-support boundary, not an App setting that an old RTX owner has failed to find. Do not infer that Frame Generation must work on RTX 20/30 merely because those cards have Tensor Cores or because a newer Super Resolution model runs on them. NVIDIA’s supported-feature table still separates the reconstruction features from the frame-generation features.

Is DLSS 4.5 worth using on an RTX 20 or 30?

Sometimes—but the answer depends on whether you value the visual improvement more than the additional reconstruction cost.

Independent testing on an RTX 3090 found that DLSS 4.5 could be slower than DLSS 4.0 in the same mode:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Game and test condition DLSS 4.5 result versus DLSS 4.0
Cyberpunk 2077, 4K Quality 19% slower
Cyberpunk 2077, 4K Balanced and Performance 15% slower
Mafia: The Old Country, 4K 10–17% slower, depending on mode
Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, 4K 17–26% slower, depending on mode

In one tested configuration, DLSS 4.5 Quality was even slower than native rendering. These are results from a particular RTX 3090, game build, resolution, and settings—not a fixed penalty for every RTX 20/30 GPU. However, they demonstrate why the older-card recommendation should begin with K rather than blindly choosing the newest model. See the detailed DLSS 4.5 testing; additional RTX 20/30 community testing has also reported meaningful performance losses in some comparisons, as summarized by Tom’s Hardware.

What to compare when testing

Do not judge the choice from one paused screenshot or from average FPS alone. Compare K and M in the same game scene while moving the camera, then check:

  • Average FPS and, more importantly, frame-time consistency.
  • Foliage, grass, hair, cloth, and thin geometry.
  • Metal grates, wires, fences, and distant detail.
  • Reflections, neon signs, and bright highlights.
  • Particles and smoke.
  • Ghosting behind moving objects.
  • Shimmering, moiré patterns, highlight flicker, and oversharpening.
  • Input response and perceived smoothness.

DLSS 4 testing found substantial image-quality improvements in many scenes, but the outcome varies by game and mode. DLSS 4.5 testing also found cases with more visible moiré, flicker, oversharpening, or worse fine-detail stability. A sharper still image is not necessarily a better moving image.

Ray Reconstruction can change the answer

Ray Reconstruction is a separate DLSS feature from Super Resolution. In a ray-traced game, changing the Super Resolution preset does not necessarily produce the same result as changing the ray-tracing denoiser.

Early DLSS 4.5 testing found that the second-generation Super Resolution path was not always combined with the existing Ray Reconstruction path in the same way as DLSS 4. In some ray-traced games, retaining Ray Reconstruction alongside the DLSS 4-level upscaling model produced a better overall result than using DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution without the relevant reconstruction path.

NVIDIA announced a separate DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction update for an August 2026 rollout. Because that rollout can change the interaction, check the title’s current behavior and NVIDIA’s latest Ray Reconstruction announcement and compatibility information before treating early test results as permanent.

What to do if the override is missing

If DLSS Override – Model Presets does not appear, that does not necessarily indicate a graphics-card problem. NVIDIA App overrides are compatible-game and feature dependent.

  1. Check the title: consult NVIDIA’s live DLSS games and apps list. NVIDIA expands verified support as titles are tested.
  2. Confirm native DLSS support: an FSR-only, XeSS-only, or non-DLSS game cannot receive a DLSS model override through NVIDIA App.
  3. Update everything: install the latest NVIDIA App, driver, and game update.
  4. Restart NVIDIA App: close it completely and reopen it after installing updates.
  5. Use Program Settings: a title may not be available under the global view, or it may need to be located manually.
  6. Close the game: apply the override while the game is not running, then launch it again.
  7. Remove conflicts: temporarily disable third-party DLSS DLL replacement tools or mods. They can override the file or model that NVIDIA App is trying to select.
  8. Revert if necessary: choose Use the 3D application setting to return control to the game.

NVIDIA App does not promise that every DLSS title exposes every model, scaling mode, or feature. Compatibility is specific to the game’s integration and the override that NVIDIA has verified.

If the new model lowers your FPS

A performance regression is plausible on RTX 20/30, particularly with DLSS 4.5 Model M or L. The transformer reconstruction pass uses GPU resources, and on older architectures its cost can offset the performance gained by lowering the internal render resolution.

Use this recovery sequence:

  1. Switch from M or L back to K.
  2. Measure frame time as well as average FPS.
  3. Test with and without Ray Reconstruction in a ray-traced game.
  4. Check whether the game is CPU-limited. DLSS reduces GPU rendering work, so it cannot deliver much additional performance when the processor is already the bottleneck.
  5. If performance is still too low, reduce the in-game DLSS mode by one step or lower another GPU-heavy setting.
  6. Keep the model that delivers the best moving image at a stable frame rate, not the one with the newest label.

The same logic applies if the image looks sharper but shimmers more: compare K and M during camera movement around foliage, reflections, thin geometry, particles, hair, and bright signs. If M’s artifacts are more distracting, K is the better setting even if M looks more detailed in a still frame.

Desktop, laptop, and Linux caveats

Laptop RTX GPUs

The feature is supported by the relevant GPU architecture, but a laptop RTX 2060, 3060, or 3070 can perform very differently from a desktop card with the same series number. Power limits, cooling, memory configuration, and the laptop manufacturer’s settings affect both the benefit and the cost of the transformer model. Do not treat an RTX 3090 benchmark as a promise for every RTX 30-series laptop.

Linux and Steam Proton

The NVIDIA App click path applies to Windows. Linux and Steam Proton use a separate driver and API path. Whether DLSS options appear depends on the NVIDIA driver, Proton release, game, and whether the necessary NVIDIA API support is exposed. NVIDIA’s Linux gaming driver guide documents the relevant game-specific caveats.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the game has no DLSS?

Use the game’s native reconstruction option first. If the title supports DLSS, its own implementation is usually the cleanest starting point; NVIDIA App overrides are most useful for replacing an older model, exposing an additional mode, or selecting a verified newer preset.

Games without DLSS may offer AMD FSR or Intel XeSS. Those are separate reconstruction technologies and cannot receive NVIDIA’s DLSS transformer models through NVIDIA App. NVIDIA Image Scaling is another fallback: it is a more broadly usable spatial upscaler, but it is not equivalent to DLSS Super Resolution and generally makes less use of temporal information. See NVIDIA’s Image Scaling overview.

Third-party tools such as Lossless Scaling can provide frame-generation-like interpolation in some games, but they are separate software products with their own artifacts, latency, compatibility limits, and changing pricing or availability. They are not a way to turn an RTX 20/30 card into an official DLSS Frame Generation or Multi Frame Generation device.

Do not confuse this with DLSS 5

NVIDIA has announced DLSS 5 for fall 2026, but the cited announcement does not establish compatibility with older RTX GPUs. DLSS 5 should therefore be treated as a separate future technology, not as evidence that RTX 20/30 cards will receive any additional frame-generation capability. Check NVIDIA’s official DLSS 5 announcement for confirmed hardware support when that information is published.

Bottom line for each RTX generation

  • RTX 20/30: use DLSS 4’s transformer Super Resolution, DLAA, and Ray Reconstruction where supported. DLSS 4.5’s second-generation Super Resolution is available through NVIDIA App, but start with K because M and L can be expensive on these GPUs.
  • RTX 40: you get the transformer reconstruction features and official Frame Generation, including its newer model. You do not get Multi Frame Generation, Dynamic Multi Frame Generation, or 6X mode.
  • RTX 50: you get the complete DLSS 4/4.5 feature stack, including Frame Generation, Multi Frame Generation, Dynamic Multi Frame Generation, and 6X mode.

If you own an RTX 2060 or RTX 3060, the right conclusion is not that your card received every part of DLSS 4. It is that NVIDIA delivered the newer reconstruction models to your existing DLSS-capable games, while keeping the frame-generation features tied to newer GPU generations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does an RTX 3060 support DLSS 4.5?

Yes, an RTX 3060 can use DLSS 4.5’s second-generation Super Resolution model through NVIDIA App in compatible games. It can also use DLSS Super Resolution, DLAA, and Ray Reconstruction. It does not support official DLSS Frame Generation, Multi Frame Generation, Dynamic Multi Frame Generation, or 6X mode.

Can NVIDIA App add DLSS to a game that only supports FSR or XeSS?

No. NVIDIA App overrides upgrade compatible DLSS integrations or expose additional modes in supported games; they do not universally add DLSS to titles without a compatible DLSS implementation.

Which DLSS preset is best for an RTX 20- or 30-series card?

Start with Preset K. Test Preset M in Performance mode if image quality is more important than maximum FPS and you have enough GPU headroom. Use Preset L mainly for Ultra Performance at 4K, and benchmark it because it can be particularly costly on older GPUs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why did DLSS 4.5 reduce my FPS?

The newer transformer model requires additional GPU work. RTX 20/30 cards lack native FP8 support, so Models M and L can have a larger performance cost on those architectures. Switch back to K, compare frame times, and test Ray Reconstruction separately if the game uses ray tracing.

The Bottom Line

For RTX 20/30 owners, DLSS 4 and 4.5 mean better reconstruction—not frame generation. Install the latest NVIDIA App and driver, apply the override to a compatible DLSS game, start with Preset K, and test M or L only when the image-quality gain is worth the performance cost. Official DLSS Frame Generation remains RTX 40/50-only, while Multi Frame Generation and its Dynamic and 6X modes remain RTX 50-only.
