Quick answer: Windows and Linux users can install CS2 natively through Steam. Mac users need an unofficial workaround, an Intel Mac running Windows through Boot Camp, or another computer and a remote-play solution. The base game is free, but Prime Status is an optional paid upgrade with additional matchmaking and progression features.
Download Counter-Strike 2 safely from Steam
Steam is Counter-Strike 2’s official delivery platform. Start with Valve’s official Steam installation page, then follow these steps:
- Download and install Steam for your operating system.
- Open Steam and sign in to an existing account, or create a Steam account.
- Visit the official Counter-Strike 2 store page.
- Select Play Game. You can also add the game through the store page and then find it in Library.
- Choose a Steam Library drive with at least 85 GB of available space.
- Let Steam download, install, and update the game. The download progress appears on Steam’s Downloads page.
- Launch CS2 from your Steam Library after the installation and updates finish.
Steam games are associated with the account that owns or adds them. Do not download a supposed CS2 installer from a file-sharing site, torrent, software mirror, or third-party download page. A site offering a cracked installer or a separate Mac .dmg is not providing an official Valve release and may expose you to malware or account theft.

Is Counter-Strike 2 really free?
Yes. The base game is free to play on Steam, so you do not pay upfront to download or start playing. However, free-to-play does not mean that every feature is included without charge.
Prime Status is optional. The US Steam listing currently displays Prime Status at $14.99. The actual price can differ by country, currency, taxes, and future Steam pricing changes, so check the live Steam listing before buying.

Valve explains the distinction in its Prime Status FAQ. If Premier, XP, ratings, skill groups, or weekly rewards are unavailable after installation, that may be an account-feature limitation rather than a broken installation.
Windows requirements for CS2
Counter-Strike 2 has a native Windows version. Valve’s current requirements specify Windows 10 and limit support to 64-bit Windows. A 32-bit Windows installation is not an eligible supported platform.

The requirements above come from the official Steam listing. The listing explicitly names Windows 10; it does not present a separate Windows 11 minimum in the current requirements block. Many Windows 11 systems may be able to run the game, but it is more accurate to rely on the live Valve listing rather than claim that Valve has separately documented Windows 11 in that requirements text.
Meeting the minimum specification does not guarantee a particular frame rate, resolution, latency, or smooth competitive experience. Steam notes that minimum requirements are not necessarily a performance target. Update Windows, install current graphics drivers, and expect to adjust the game’s graphics settings if your hardware is close to the minimum.

Linux requirements and installation
Linux is an officially listed CS2 platform. The Steam store provides a separate SteamOS + Linux requirements section, so a standard Linux installation does not need to be described as a Proton-only workaround.

Ubuntu 20.04 is the Linux operating system named by Valve; the listing does not guarantee every Linux distribution or every driver combination. Other distributions may work, but results depend on the distribution, kernel, GPU driver, Vulkan stack, and Steam package. Before troubleshooting the game itself, confirm that Vulkan works correctly for your graphics card and that the system is using current drivers.
On a supported Linux setup, install Steam using your distribution’s normal Steam package or the official Steam route, sign in, open the CS2 listing, and select Play Game. Steam will select the available Linux build and manage future updates.
Does Counter-Strike 2 work on macOS?
No. There is no native macOS version of Counter-Strike 2. Valve’s Mac compatibility FAQ says CS2 is not available on Mac, and the current Steam listing has requirements for Windows and SteamOS + Linux but no macOS requirements section.
Steam does have a macOS client, but that only means the Steam application can run on a Mac. It does not mean that every game in the Steam catalog has a Mac build. A Mac user may be able to view the CS2 store page, but that does not make the game natively installable or playable in macOS.
Intel Mac: Boot Camp is a Windows route
Owners of a compatible Intel-based Mac can investigate Apple’s Boot Camp method for installing Windows 10. Apple documents Boot Camp for Intel Macs, not Apple-silicon Macs. After booting into Windows, the user would install Steam and CS2 inside Windows.
This is not macOS support. It requires a Windows installation, disk space for the Windows partition and game, rebooting between macOS and Windows, and hardware that can run the listed requirements. See Apple’s Boot Camp documentation and its supported Mac guidance before changing the drive.
Apple-silicon Mac: unofficial options only
Apple’s Boot Camp documentation does not support Apple-silicon Macs. Owners of M-series Macs must instead rely on unofficial options such as compatibility software, virtual machines, or remote play from another Windows or Linux computer. These methods can change or stop working after updates to CS2, Steam, macOS, drivers, or anti-cheat components.

Third-party services such as CrossOver publish compatibility information, but a compatibility report is not a Valve guarantee of stable CS2 play, matchmaking, or anti-cheat behavior. For example, CodeWeavers’ Counter-Strike compatibility entry concerns third-party compatibility information and should not be treated as official CS2 macOS support.
CS2 uses Valve Anti-Cheat, identified as VAC on the Steam listing. Do not assume that Wine, CrossOver, a virtual machine, or another translation layer will provide reliable VAC-enabled matchmaking. Do not disable security software or anti-cheat protections as a routine troubleshooting step.

Install CS2 on another Steam Library drive
If your system drive does not have 85 GB free, create or select another Steam Library location before starting the download:
- Open Steam and go to Steam > Settings > Storage.
- Use the + button to add another Library drive or folder.
- Return to the CS2 installation dialog and select the new Library location.
Leave additional room for updates instead of filling a drive to exactly 85 GB. Steam does not recommend installing the Steam client itself on an external drive because performance problems can result; use a suitable internal or properly configured fast drive where possible. Fix common CS2 installation and launch problems
Steam says the game is not available on your current platform
This message generally means Steam has detected an unsupported operating system or configuration. For CS2, check these likely causes:

- Steam is using an unexpected compatibility configuration.
- You have opened the wrong Counter-Strike entry or an old search result.
Steam recommends checking the game’s operating system and hardware requirements when this error appears. See its platform-unavailable troubleshooting page.
The download is slow, paused, or stuck
- Open Steam’s Downloads page and check whether the download is waiting for disk activity, an update, or another queued item.
- Go to Steam > Settings > Downloads and check whether a bandwidth limit is enabled.
- Confirm that the selected drive still has enough free space for the game and future patches.
- Restart Steam and, if necessary, restart the computer and network connection.
- Check whether other devices or applications are using the connection heavily.
Do not switch to a third-party mirror to solve a slow Steam download. Steam’s download and storage troubleshooting guidance is the safer route.

The game installs but will not launch
Work through these steps in order:
- Update the operating system.
- Install current graphics drivers for your GPU.
- Verify the installed game files using the procedure below.
- Close non-essential overlays and background software temporarily.
- Recheck the official requirements, especially 64-bit Windows, Linux Vulkan support, RAM, graphics compatibility, and free storage.
A computer that is close to the minimum may still experience launch failures or poor performance. Valve’s general game-launch troubleshooting provides additional steps.
Verify damaged or incomplete CS2 files
Use Steam’s file verification tool if CS2 crashes, has missing textures, or appears incomplete:

- Open Library, then right-click Counter-Strike 2. You can also open the game’s Library page and select the gear icon.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish and repair or reacquire files if necessary.
Steam warns that one or more files can fail verification because local configuration files are not replaced. That result can be normal and does not automatically mean the entire installation is corrupt. See the official file-verification instructions.
Steam cannot find CS2 after installation
If the game appears to be missing from your Library:
- Check that you are signed into the Steam account used to add or install the game.
- Search the Library and check whether Counter-Strike 2 has been hidden.
- Confirm that Steam has refreshed after the installation or account change.
- Look at your other Steam Library drives; the game may be installed somewhere else.

Native Linux support is not the same thing as a guaranteed Steam Deck experience. Steam uses separate Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown categories for Deck compatibility. Check the live compatibility badge on the CS2 Steam page and review the current Steam Deck compatibility information before buying or configuring a handheld.
Do not infer a fixed Deck status solely from the fact that the desktop Linux requirements list exists. Valve can change compatibility and game behavior through updates, and Steam Deck results can also depend on controls, display settings, performance targets, and anti-cheat behavior.

What the 2012 date on Steam means
Counter-Strike 2 replaced the main Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Steam listing when it launched as a free-to-play game on September 27, 2023. The current Steam page displays August 21, 2012 as the listing’s release date because it inherited the historical CS:GO app record. That 2012 date is not the CS2 launch date.
Similarly, older reviews and older articles may refer to CS:GO, speculate about future Mac support, or describe features that do not map directly to the current CS2 release. For the launch date, see Valve’s September 27, 2023 announcement. For current patches and changes, use the official Counter-Strike update log rather than relying on a hard-coded client version number.
