The legitimate way to use scripts in Roblox is through Roblox Studio. You insert a script into your experience’s Explorer hierarchy, write code in Luau—Roblox’s programming language derived from Lua 5.1—and test it in Studio. The script’s type, location, enabled state, and run context determine whether it runs on the server, on a player’s client, or only when another script loads it.

This guide covers scripting for experiences you own or are authorized to edit. It does not explain executors, injected code, or cheating in someone else’s game. Roblox says exploiting violates its rules, and warns that exploit downloads are commonly used to spread malware, keyloggers, phishing, and account-stealing software. See Roblox’s cheating and exploiting guidance instead of downloading an alleged script executor.

For the quickest successful test: open a Baseplate in Studio, insert a Script under ServerScriptService, enter print('Hello from Roblox!'), press F5, and look for the message in the Output window.

What a Roblox script does

A script is a container for Luau source code that adds dynamic behavior to an experience. Building a map with Parts creates a static scene; scripting makes that scene respond to players and events.

Scripts can open doors, react when a player touches an object, create leaderboards, handle keyboard or controller input, update interfaces, spawn enemies, control non-player characters, save player data, and coordinate multiplayer gameplay. Roblox’s scripting documentation describes scripting as the way creators trigger events, respond to input, save data, create leaderboards, spawn enemies, and control NPC behavior.

Experience
The overall Roblox game, including its places and published configuration.
Place
A map or scene within an experience. A single experience can contain multiple places.
Instance
An object in Roblox’s Explorer hierarchy, such as a Part, Folder, Script, RemoteEvent, or service.
Server
The authoritative multiplayer simulation. It should make final decisions about rules, rewards, damage, currency, inventory, and other important game state.
Client
One player’s copy of the experience. It handles that player’s input, camera, interface, and many presentation effects.
Luau
The language used by Roblox scripts. It is derived from Lua 5.1 but includes Roblox-specific APIs and Luau features, so a general Lua tutorial is useful but is not the complete Roblox scripting reference.

What you need before writing a script

You need a Roblox account, a Windows or Mac computer, and Roblox Studio. The regular Roblox player application is for playing experiences; it is not the normal editor for creating and testing game scripts.

Roblox Studio is free. Roblox’s current Studio setup requirements list Windows 10 or macOS 10.14 as minimum operating systems, with Windows 11 and macOS 14 or later recommended. The listed memory requirements are 3 GB minimum and 8 GB recommended, with a recommended resolution of 1600×900 or higher.

Requirement Current guidance
Application Roblox Studio
Operating systems Windows and Mac
Minimum operating system Windows 10 or macOS 10.14
Recommended operating system Windows 11 or macOS 14+
Memory 3 GB minimum; 8 GB recommended
Display 1600×900 or higher recommended

Studio and its menus change as Roblox updates the engine. If a button is not exactly where described, look for the same window or function in the current Creator Hub documentation. Keeping Studio updated is important because experiences use the latest engine version and current APIs.

Find the four Studio windows you will use

Open a template such as Baseplate. Before writing code, make sure these panels are visible. You can open them from Studio’s Window menu or the relevant Home toolbar controls.

Explorer

Explorer displays the place’s data model as a hierarchy. It contains services such as Workspace, ServerScriptService, ReplicatedStorage, and StarterGui, along with the objects inside them.

Explorer determines where a script lives, which is often just as important as the code inside it. Hover over a parent object and click the + button to insert an Instance, then select the object type. You can also use Ctrl+I on Windows or Command+I on Mac. Rename objects carefully: Roblox names are case-sensitive.

See the official Explorer documentation for the current interface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Properties

The Properties window shows settings for the selected Instance. A Part’s properties include Anchored, CanCollide, Transparency, and Color. A script has properties such as Enabled and, where applicable, RunContext.

If a script appears correct but does nothing, checking its Enabled property and its parent in Explorer should be among your first troubleshooting steps. The Properties documentation explains the window in more detail.

Script Editor

The Script Editor opens when you create a script or double-click an existing one. It provides syntax highlighting, autocomplete, documentation lookup, navigation, linting, and real-time feedback. Red underlines and messages often reveal a syntax or type problem before you even press Play. Roblox documents the editor and Luau tooling in its Script Editor guide and Luau documentation.

Output

The Output window displays print() messages, warn() messages, script errors, and Roblox engine messages. It can also identify whether output came from the client or server and show the source script and line number when the context and source options are enabled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Output is a developer console, not text that automatically appears on the player’s screen. To show a message in the game, you would use a GUI and the appropriate client-side code. Read more in Roblox’s Output documentation.

Create and run your first Roblox script

Start with a message rather than a complicated mechanic. This confirms that Studio is open, the script is in a valid server location, playtesting is working, and you know where errors appear.

  1. Open a place in Roblox Studio, preferably a new Baseplate for testing.
  2. In Explorer, find ServerScriptService.
  3. Hover over ServerScriptService and click +.
  4. Select Script.
  5. Rename the new script HelloScript.
  6. Double-click it to open the Script Editor.
  7. Delete the template code and enter:
print('Hello from Roblox!')
  1. Open the Output window if it is hidden.
  2. Press F5 to start a Test session.
  3. Confirm that Output contains Hello from Roblox!.
  4. Press Shift+F5 to stop testing.

The official scripting introduction uses a server script in ServerScriptService and verifies it through Output.

What this code means

  • print() writes a debugging message to Output.
  • The text inside the quotation marks is a string.
  • The script runs automatically during a test because it is a normal server-side Script in an appropriate service.
  • The message is not visible to players in the published game. It is a Studio/developer message.

If you see no message, do not immediately rewrite the code. Check whether you pressed F5, whether the script is enabled, whether it is actually under ServerScriptService, and whether Output reports a syntax error.

Script, LocalScript, and ModuleScript: what is the difference?

Roblox has three script containers beginners encounter most often. Choosing the wrong one, or putting the right one in the wrong location, is the most common reason a correct-looking script appears not to run.

Type Where it runs Typical uses Does it run automatically?
Script Usually the server when placed in a server container; its behavior can also be affected by RunContext Game rules, damage, rewards, currency, inventory, NPCs, data saving, and world changes Usually, when its location and run context allow it
LocalScript One player’s client Input, camera, interface behavior, local effects, and client presentation Yes, but only in supported client locations
ModuleScript Whichever Luau environment requires it Reusable functions and organized systems No; another script normally has to call require()

Normal server Scripts

Use a normal server Script for anything that must be authoritative or visible consistently to all players:

  • Rules for a round or match.
  • Damage and health decisions.
  • Rewards, currency, inventory, and purchases.
  • Leaderboards and persistent player data.
  • NPC behavior and enemy spawning.
  • Changes to shared world objects.

ServerScriptService is the recommended home for major server systems. A Script can also be placed under a world object in Workspace when it directly controls that object, such as a door or platform.

LocalScripts

A LocalScript runs only for one player. It is the appropriate place to read that player’s keyboard, mouse, touch, or gamepad input, update their UI, control their camera, or run a client-only visual effect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common supported locations include:

  • StarterPlayer > StarterPlayerScripts for general client code copied to each player.
  • StarterPlayer > StarterCharacterScripts for client code copied when a character spawns.
  • StarterGui for interface-related LocalScripts.
  • StarterPack for Tools and their client behavior.
  • ReplicatedFirst for minimal client-side loading code.

A LocalScript in an ordinary location such as ReplicatedStorage will not simply start. Move it to a supported client container.

ModuleScripts

A ModuleScript is normally a reusable code library. It does not automatically execute just because it exists in Explorer. Another script loads it with require(), and the module returns exactly one value, commonly a table containing functions.

For example, create a ModuleScript named HelloModule in ReplicatedStorage:

local module = {}

function module.sayHello()
	print('Hello from a module!')
end

return module

A separate server Script can load and use it:

local ReplicatedStorage = game:GetService('ReplicatedStorage')
local HelloModule = require(ReplicatedStorage:WaitForChild('HelloModule'))

HelloModule.sayHello()

A module runs once per Luau environment and returns the same value on later require() calls in that environment. The server and each client have separate environments, so requiring the same module on the server and client does not create one shared state table. Roblox’s ModuleScript reference covers this behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is RunContext?

A normal newly created Script generally uses the legacy placement model: its location determines whether it runs on the server. Roblox also supports explicit RunContext values for Scripts, which can allow code to run in contexts beyond the conventional locations.

For a first project, learn the conventional arrangement first: server Scripts in ServerScriptService or under suitable Workspace objects, LocalScripts in supported Starter containers, and shared ModuleScripts or RemoteEvents in ReplicatedStorage. Explicit RunContext is useful for advanced organization, but changing it is not a substitute for understanding client/server execution. See Roblox’s current script types and locations guide.

Where should scripts go?

Use this table as a practical placement guide:

Location Appropriate use
Workspace Server Scripts attached directly to world objects, such as a door, platform, or trigger.
ServerScriptService Main server gameplay systems and scripts.
ServerStorage Server-only objects and ModuleScripts. Scripts placed here do not run directly.
ReplicatedFirst Minimal client-side loading code.
ReplicatedStorage RemoteEvents, shared objects, and shared ModuleScripts. A legacy Script or LocalScript does not automatically run here.
StarterPlayer > StarterPlayerScripts General-purpose LocalScripts copied to each player.
StarterPlayer > StarterCharacterScripts LocalScripts copied when a player’s character spawns.
StarterGui UI objects and LocalScripts for interface behavior.
StarterPack Tools and LocalScripts related to a player’s starting inventory.

The basic rule is simple: put server authority in server-only services, client presentation in supported client containers, and shared communication objects in a location both sides can access. A syntactically perfect script can still appear broken when it is in the wrong container.

How scripts interact with Roblox objects

Most beginner scripts combine three patterns: getting a reference to an object, getting a Roblox service, and listening for an event.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use script.Parent

If a Script is a child of a Part, script.Parent refers to that Part:

local part = script.Parent
part.Transparency = 0.5

This makes an object-specific script reusable. If you move the same script beneath another Part, it controls the new parent. Make sure the parent really has the property or event your code expects.

Get services with game:GetService()

Roblox provides services for common systems. Use game:GetService() to obtain them:

local Players = game:GetService('Players')
local ReplicatedStorage = game:GetService('ReplicatedStorage')

Services include Players, Workspace, ReplicatedStorage, UserInputService, and DataStoreService. A service may have different access rules depending on whether the code runs on the server or client.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Listen for events with :Connect()

Roblox gameplay is event-driven. Rather than repeatedly asking whether something happened, connect a function to an event:

local part = script.Parent

part.Touched:Connect(function(hit)
	print(hit.Name, 'touched the part')
end)

When the event fires, Roblox calls the function and supplies event information such as the object that touched the Part. Other common events include Players.PlayerAdded, button activation events, and input events.

Touched can fire more than once because several body parts or physical contacts may touch an object. A real mechanic usually validates the touching object and uses a debounce. For systems that should only respond once, Roblox also provides Once(); a connection returned by Connect() can be stopped with Disconnect() when a long-running system no longer needs it. See the official events documentation.

First gameplay project: make a disappearing platform

This small project demonstrates variables, functions, properties, events, conditions, early returns, and a debounce without requiring a complete game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set up the object

  1. Insert a Part into Workspace.
  2. Rename it DisappearingPlatform.
  3. In Properties, set Anchored to true so physics does not move it.
  4. Hover over the Part in Explorer, click +, and insert a normal Script as its child.
  5. Replace the script with the following code:
local platform = script.Parent
local busy = false

platform.Touched:Connect(function(hit)
	if busy then
		return
	end

	local character = hit.Parent
	local humanoid = character and character:FindFirstChildOfClass('Humanoid')

	if not humanoid then
		return
	end

	busy = true
	platform.Transparency = 1
	platform.CanCollide = false

	task.wait(2)

	platform.Transparency = 0
	platform.CanCollide = true
	busy = false
end)

Press F5, walk onto the platform, and expect this sequence:

  1. The character touches the platform.
  2. The platform becomes invisible.
  3. CanCollide becomes false, so players cannot stand on it.
  4. After two seconds, the platform becomes visible and solid again.

What each part teaches

  • local platform = script.Parent stores the Part controlled by the script.
  • local busy = false creates a debounce state.
  • :Connect(function(hit) tells Roblox what to do when Touched fires.
  • if busy then return end prevents overlapping activations.
  • FindFirstChildOfClass('Humanoid') filters out touches from ordinary loose Parts and looks for a character.
  • Transparency and CanCollide change visible and physical properties.
  • task.wait(2) pauses this function for two seconds before restoring the platform.

Without the debounce, several body parts could start several overlapping waits. Without the Humanoid check, an unrelated physics object could activate the platform. If the Part is unanchored, it may move before the script’s behavior is easy to observe. If nothing happens, check the script’s location, Enabled property, and Output.

Roblox’s introductory scripting tutorial uses a disappearing-platform exercise because it introduces these same core ideas.

Server Scripts versus LocalScripts

The platform example belongs on the server because the platform is shared world state. Every player should receive the result. Input and interface work, however, normally begins on the client.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Choice Strengths Limitations
Server Script Authoritative, replicated to players, suitable for rules and persistent state Does not directly handle every client-only input or UI object; may need client/server communication
LocalScript Responsive input, UI, camera behavior, and local visual effects Runs for only one player and cannot be trusted with important game decisions
RemoteEvent Provides explicit client/server communication Requests must be validated and sensibly rate-limited
ModuleScript Encourages reusable, organized code Does not run automatically, and server/client state is separate

A client can request an action, but the server should decide whether that action is allowed. Never let a LocalScript be the authority for currency, damage, purchases, inventory, rewards, unlocks, permission-sensitive teleports, admin actions, or anti-cheat decisions. Client code can be inspected or modified by a determined attacker. Moving important logic into a LocalScript does not protect it.

Roblox describes this model in its client-server runtime documentation and its client-server security guidance: the server should act as a gatekeeper and validate client-supplied data rather than blindly relaying requests.

Connect a client to the server with a RemoteEvent

Use a RemoteEvent for one-way communication between a client and server. This example lets the player press C to request a color change. It teaches the communication pattern; a production game would add meaningful permission, target, distance, cooldown, and gameplay checks.

Create the RemoteEvent

  1. In Explorer, find ReplicatedStorage.
  2. Insert a RemoteEvent.
  3. Rename it RequestColorChange.
  4. Place a LocalScript in StarterPlayer > StarterPlayerScripts.
  5. Place a normal server Script in ServerScriptService.

Client code

Put this in the LocalScript:

local UserInputService = game:GetService('UserInputService')
local ReplicatedStorage = game:GetService('ReplicatedStorage')

local requestColorChange =
	ReplicatedStorage:WaitForChild('RequestColorChange')

UserInputService.InputBegan:Connect(function(input, gameProcessed)
	if gameProcessed then
		return
	end

	if input.KeyCode == Enum.KeyCode.C then
		requestColorChange:FireServer()
	end
end)

The client listens for input. When the player presses C, FireServer() sends a request to the server. The client does not directly change the shared character state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Server code

Put this in the Script under ServerScriptService:

local ReplicatedStorage = game:GetService('ReplicatedStorage')

local requestColorChange =
	ReplicatedStorage:WaitForChild('RequestColorChange')

requestColorChange.OnServerEvent:Connect(function(player)
	local character = player.Character
	local rootPart = character and character:FindFirstChild('HumanoidRootPart')

	if rootPart then
		rootPart.Color = Color3.fromRGB(255, 80, 80)
	end
end)

When the server receives the event, Roblox supplies the requesting player as the first argument. The server finds that player’s character and changes its root part. Because the change is server-side, it can replicate to the other clients.

RemoteEvent API at a glance

Direction Method or event
Client to server RemoteEvent:FireServer(...)
Server receives RemoteEvent.OnServerEvent
Server to one client RemoteEvent:FireClient(player, ...)
Server to every client RemoteEvent:FireAllClients(...)
Client receives RemoteEvent.OnClientEvent

RemoteEvents normally belong in ReplicatedStorage so the relevant client and server code can find them. Roblox documents these methods in its remote events guide and RemoteEvent reference.

Validate every client request

A malicious client can call a RemoteEvent without using your intended button or key. The server must independently check:

  • Whether the player is allowed to perform the action.
  • Whether the requested target belongs to that player.
  • Whether the player is close enough.
  • Whether the player owns the necessary item or has enough currency.
  • Whether the request is being sent too frequently.
  • Whether numeric values, item names, and other arguments are within acceptable limits.

A RemoteEvent is a communication mechanism, not a security system. Roblox documents an approximate client-to-server rate limit of 500 requests per second per client, but that is not a target for game code. Add a mechanic-specific cooldown and reject unreasonable requests well before any platform limit.

Reuse code with ModuleScripts

Once a project has several scripts, copying the same function into each file makes bugs and updates harder to manage. A ModuleScript lets you define reusable behavior once.

For example, a shared pickup helper could look like this:

local PickupManager = {}

function PickupManager.isValidPickup(instance)
	return instance:IsA('BasePart')
		and instance:GetAttribute('Pickup') == true
end

return PickupManager

Another Script can call PickupManager.isValidPickup(someObject) after requiring the module. Modules are useful for inventory systems, round management, pickup handling, configuration, and shared utility functions.

A ModuleScript in ReplicatedStorage can be required by both server and client code, but anything replicated there should be treated as visible to clients. Do not put passwords, private keys, secret algorithms, server-only permissions, or sensitive data in a shared module. Server-only modules belong in ServerStorage or another server-only location. Roblox’s code reuse guide explains how to organize modules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A useful beginner organization might look like this:

ReplicatedStorage
├── Remotes
│   └── RequestColorChange
└── Shared
    └── PickupManager

ServerScriptService
├── Main.server.lua
└── Data.server.lua

StarterPlayer
└── StarterPlayerScripts
    └── Input.client.lua

ServerStorage
└── ServerOnlyModules

The names are a convention, not a requirement. The important distinction is which code is server-only, client-only, or deliberately shared.

Test scripts correctly in Studio

Running a script in the editor is not the same as publishing it. Studio has several playtesting modes:

Mode Shortcut What it does
Test F5 Starts the game and inserts an avatar at a SpawnLocation, or approximately (0, 100, 0) if no suitable SpawnLocation is used.
Test Here No fixed shortcut listed here Starts the game in front of the current camera position.
Run F8 Simulates the game without inserting an avatar.

Stop any session with Shift+F5. During a solo Test or Test Here session, Studio can switch between Client and Server views. Output identifies client and server messages separately, which is especially useful when a LocalScript and server Script are supposed to work together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use this testing progression:

  1. Test the smallest behavior first, such as a print() message.
  2. Confirm the expected result in Output or in the 3D view.
  3. Test the server-side code separately from the client-side code.
  4. Use the Server & Clients mode for multiplayer behavior.
  5. Use the Device Emulator to test layouts and controls on mobile, controller, and other target devices.
  6. Use Network Simulation to add delay, jitter, and packet loss to remote-event gameplay.
  7. Publish privately and test the published experience before making it available to players.

Studio normally uses no network latency during playtesting. A mechanic that works perfectly in a local solo session can still fail when real clients experience delay or packet loss. Roblox’s testing modes documentation covers Server & Clients, Device Emulator, and network simulation.

Remember that runtime changes are generally temporary. When you stop a playtest, Studio resets Instances to their pre-test state. If you change a Part during a test and want that change to remain, stop the session, edit the source place, save it, and publish the updated version.

Debug a Roblox script that does nothing

Use this order instead of guessing:

  1. Confirm the play mode. Press F5 or F8 as appropriate. A script will not produce runtime output while you are merely editing.
  2. Check the script type. Is it a Script, LocalScript, or ModuleScript? A ModuleScript will not run until another script calls require().
  3. Check the location. A LocalScript must be in a supported client container. A legacy Script in ReplicatedStorage or ServerStorage does not automatically run.
  4. Check Enabled. A disabled script cannot execute.
  5. Read Output. Look for a red error, file name, and line number. Enable the context and source filters if they are hidden.
  6. Check spelling and capitalization. RequestColorChange, requestColorChange, and Requestcolorchange are different names.
  7. Check object paths. The object may not be where the code expects it to be, or it may not exist yet.
  8. Check the execution side. A server Script cannot directly access a player’s client-only GUI object, and a LocalScript cannot perform server-only operations.
  9. Check replication. A RemoteEvent must exist in a place visible to both sides, usually ReplicatedStorage.

Add temporary diagnostics

Place a message at the top of a script to confirm that execution begins:

print('Script started')

local part = script.Parent
print('Parent is', part:GetFullName())

Use warn() for a diagnostic that should stand out:

warn('Expected a Humanoid but none was found')

For an assumption that must be true, use an assertion while developing:

Remove noisy diagnostics once the system works. For deeper problems, use Studio breakpoints to pause execution and inspect variables, the call stack, and the next line. Roblox’s debugging documentation covers breakpoints, the Breakpoints window, and the Developer Console.

Use the Developer Console

During testing or gameplay, open the Developer Console with F9 or by entering /console in chat. It provides client and server output along with memory and network performance information. This can reveal a problem that is not obvious from the 3D view.

Common script problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause Recovery
No Output message You are not playtesting, the script is disabled, it is in the wrong location, or it contains a syntax error. Press F5, check Enabled, confirm the type and location, and read Output.
A LocalScript does nothing It is not in a supported client container. Move it to StarterPlayerScripts, StarterGui, StarterPack, StarterCharacterScripts, or ReplicatedFirst.
A Script in ReplicatedStorage does nothing A default legacy Script does not run there. Move it to ServerScriptService, or use an intentional RunContext arrangement only after understanding it.
The server cannot find a GUI object The GUI exists on the client under PlayerGui. Use a RemoteEvent, or keep the server’s state in a server-owned object and let a LocalScript update the interface.
Only one player sees a change The change was made locally. Make the server authoritative and replicate the result.
A RemoteEvent error appears The event is missing, misnamed, or not visible to both sides. Put it in ReplicatedStorage, check capitalization, and use WaitForChild() where appropriate.
It works in solo testing but fails with several players The code assumes client/server behavior or replication that is not true in multiplayer. Use Server & Clients testing and inspect both client and server Output.
DataStore calls fail in Studio API access is disabled, or the call is being made from a client. Use a server Script and enable Studio API access only in a separate test version.
A platform reacts repeatedly Touched fires more than once. Add a debounce and check that the touching object belongs to a character with a Humanoid.
The code runs but nothing looks different It only prints to Output or changes an object/property that is not visible to the player. Use a GUI, a visible world object, or a replicated server-side change as appropriate.
Script changes vanish The changes were made during a playtest. Stop testing, edit the source script or object, save, and publish.

Use Creator Store models and scripts safely

Free models and Creator Store assets can save time, but they can also contain Scripts, LocalScripts, and ModuleScripts that do much more than their description suggests. Roblox identifies third-party assets as a common source of backdoors and recommends inspecting them.

Before adding an unfamiliar asset to a real project:

  1. Save or publish a backup of your current place.
  2. Insert the asset into a disposable test place, not directly into your main experience.
  3. Expand the model completely in Explorer.
  4. Search Explorer for every Script, LocalScript, and ModuleScript.
  5. Open and read each script.
  6. Use the Creator Store’s script-disabling option when examining an asset, or disable its scripts in Properties before testing its geometry.
  7. Look for obfuscated code, unexplained remote calls, asset IDs, permission checks, or code unrelated to what the model claims to do.
  8. Be especially cautious with code that dynamically loads modules or assets, including unexplained require(assetId), loadstring(), or remote asset-loading behavior.
  9. Remove an asset if you cannot explain what its code does.

A model can look like a harmless house, vehicle, or decoration while containing a backdoor. Roblox moderation does not guarantee that every unwanted script has been removed. See Roblox’s Creator Store documentation and its guidance on third-party asset vulnerabilities.

Saving player data: an important server-only case

Persistent data is a common next step after basic scripting. DataStoreService stores information between play sessions, but it is server-only. Calling it from a LocalScript causes an error, and all data operations are network calls that can fail.

Use a server Script, protect calls with pcall(), and consider UpdateAsync() when concurrent servers could otherwise overwrite one another’s changes. Do not casually test live player data from Studio. Roblox says Studio API access must be enabled before Studio can access data stores, and warns that Studio can access the same data stores as the live client application. Use a separate test experience or isolated test version for data-store development. Read the current DataStoreService documentation before adding persistence.

Publish a tested experience

Running a place locally does not publish it. Publishing uploads the place data model—including its scripts—to Roblox. New published experiences are private by default, which makes private testing the safer next step.

  1. In Studio, select File > Publish to Roblox.
  2. Enter an experience name and description.
  3. Choose the creator or group.
  4. Choose the supported devices.
  5. Click Create.
  6. Keep the experience private while you test.
  7. When it is ready, configure audience and permissions through Creator Dashboard.

Before making an experience public, test with multiple clients, review every RemoteEvent, remove diagnostic output, inspect third-party assets, and confirm that no secrets are stored in replicated code. Roblox’s current publishing guide contains the current labels and publishing workflow.

When to use an external editor

Studio’s built-in Script Editor is the best place to begin because it is already connected to Explorer, autocomplete, documentation, linting, type checking, and Studio’s debugger.

Larger projects may use Script Sync to synchronize Roblox scripts with local files, or a third-party workflow such as Rojo for source control and external editing. These tools can improve organization and version control, but they add setup and do not replace Studio testing. Script Sync does not control Studio’s debugger. See Roblox’s Script Sync documentation before adopting an external workflow.

What to learn next

After the first script and disappearing platform, learn these ideas in roughly this order:

  1. Variables, values, and Roblox Instances.
  2. Properties and object paths.
  3. Functions and return values.
  4. Conditionals and early returns.
  5. Loops and timers.
  6. Tables and arrays.
  7. Events and connection cleanup.
  8. ModuleScripts and reusable systems.
  9. RemoteEvents and server validation.
  10. UI scripting, raycasting, animation, pathfinding, and data stores.

Roblox’s structured coding fundamentals curriculum is a better next step than copying increasingly complex snippets without learning where they run.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use scripts in the normal Roblox app?

Not as a general-purpose game editor. Create, place, and test legitimate Roblox scripts in Roblox Studio on Windows or Mac. The regular Roblox app is primarily for playing published experiences.

Why does my Roblox script do nothing?

Check that you are playtesting, the script is enabled, its type matches its location, and Output contains no error. A LocalScript must be in a supported client container, a legacy Script in ReplicatedStorage or ServerStorage does not automatically run, and a ModuleScript needs another script to call require().

Should I put my Roblox script in Workspace or ServerScriptService?

Use ServerScriptService for general server systems. Put a Script under a Workspace object when it directly controls that object, such as a door or platform. The script’s type and run context still matter.

Are Roblox free models safe to use?

They are not automatically safe. Inspect every Script, LocalScript, and ModuleScript in an asset, test it in a disposable place, disable scripts while examining it, and remove code you cannot explain. Third-party assets can contain backdoors.

The Bottom Line

To use Roblox scripts correctly, think in three parts: Luau code, Explorer placement, and execution context. Start with a server Script in ServerScriptService, verify it with Output, then add LocalScripts for input and UI, RemoteEvents for client/server requests, and ModuleScripts for reusable code. Keep important decisions on the server, inspect free models before trusting them, test with multiple clients, and publish only after the experience behaves correctly.
