There is no official public Minecraft APK that you should download from a mirror. Mojang directs Android users to Google Play. In the US storefront snapshot used for this guide, the base game was listed at $6.99 on both mobile stores, although prices vary by country, tax, platform and time.
What happened to Minecraft Pocket Edition?
Minecraft Pocket Edition is legacy branding. The mobile game evolved into the Bedrock version, and the current consumer download is listed as Minecraft or with a storefront-specific promotional title rather than as a separate Pocket Edition app. Mojang’s Bedrock Edition FAQ explains the relationship between the older world types and the modern Bedrock product.
If you search an app store for Minecraft Pocket Edition, select the Mojang listing for Minecraft. You do not need to find an old Pocket Edition package, and an old APK is not a safer or more official version.

Bedrock versus Java Edition
Android, iPhone and iPad run Bedrock Edition. Bedrock supports cross-play with other supported Bedrock platforms, such as consoles and Windows devices running Bedrock. It does not use the Java Edition multiplayer ecosystem.
Java Edition is the PC version for Windows, macOS and Linux. Java mods are not the same as Bedrock add-ons: Bedrock add-ons use resource packs and behavior packs and can work in supported single-player, multiplayer and Realms worlds. The two editions should not be treated as interchangeable.
Download Minecraft on Android
Use the official Minecraft Google Play listing. The listing identifies Mojang as the developer and uses the package identifier com.mojang.minecraftpe.
- Open the Google Play Store on the Android phone or tablet.
- Search for Minecraft.
- Open the Mojang listing and check the developer name and package identity. Be cautious with similarly named games.
- Tap the displayed price and complete the Google Play purchase with the Google Account you intend to use.
- Tap Install, then open Minecraft when the installation finishes.
- Sign in with a Microsoft account if you want mobile multiplayer, cross-play, Realms, Marketplace access or other connected features.
Google Play handles the purchase entitlement and installation. A Google Account is therefore needed for the store transaction, while a Microsoft account is a separate Minecraft account used for connected game features.
If the listing is missing, unavailable or has a gray installation button, Google Play may have determined that the device, Android version, hardware, screen configuration or location is not compatible. Google explains that app compatibility can depend on several developer- and device-defined factors in its Google Play compatibility guidance.
Download Minecraft on iPhone or iPad
Use the official Minecraft App Store listing. In the US storefront snapshot used for this article, it was titled Minecraft: Play with Friends! and identified Mojang as the developer. The same App Store product is used on compatible iPhones and iPads.
- Open the App Store.
- Search for Minecraft.
- Select the Mojang listing, checking the developer and screenshots before purchasing.
- Tap the price and authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID or your Apple Account password.
- Launch Minecraft after the download completes.
- Choose the Microsoft account sign-in option if you need cross-platform play, multiplayer or connected Minecraft content.
Apple uses the Apple Account for the App Store purchase and redownload history. That account is separate from the Microsoft account used inside Minecraft.
Is there an official Minecraft APK?
The official consumer Android download path is Google Play, not a public APK mirror. Mojang’s official mobile instructions direct Android users to Google Play and iOS users to the App Store.

Do not treat a website offering Minecraft Pocket Edition APK, Minecraft APK plus free Minecoins, mod APK, premium unlocked or an old version as an official Mojang source. Third-party APK files are not verified by Mojang. They may be outdated, altered, incompatible with the device architecture or game version, unsupported by Mojang, or missing the normal Google Play entitlement and update path. This does not require claiming that every APK mirror is malicious. The important point is that a mirror is not the official Minecraft distribution channel, and it creates avoidable risks around file integrity, licensing, updates and saved worlds. Do not use sideloading instructions to bypass Google Play licensing or obtain the paid game for free.
If your Android device has no Google Play Store
Do not assume that an APK from an unrelated site is an equivalent replacement. First check whether the device officially supports Google Play, whether its Android version meets Minecraft’s requirements and whether the manufacturer provides a supported store solution. If the device is reported as incompatible or has no supported store, contact Minecraft support and download resources or the device manufacturer rather than installing an unverified copy.
How much does Minecraft mobile cost?
The base Android and iOS apps are paid downloads. In the US store snapshot dated August 10, 2026, both official listings showed $6.99. That is a time- and region-specific observation, not a permanent worldwide price. Currency conversion, tax, regional pricing and future store changes can alter the amount. Trust the price shown on your own Google Play or App Store purchase screen.

- Base game: the one-time mobile app purchase.
- Marketplace content and Minecoins: optional purchases inside Bedrock.
- Realms and Realms Plus: optional subscription services.
- Minecraft Education: a separate product intended for schools and organizations, not the normal consumer replacement for Minecraft. Its Google Play listing describes that education-focused purpose.
Mojang’s free-trial page currently lists a Bedrock trial for Android, but does not list iOS among the Bedrock trial platforms. Do not promise an iPhone or iPad trial based on the Android offer.

Android requirements
Mojang’s current Android requirements material specifies the following baseline for supported updates:

See Mojang’s Android requirements and troubleshooting page for the supported baseline. These figures are eligibility and support thresholds, not a performance guarantee. A phone that technically qualifies may still have low frame rates, long loading times, crashes or multiplayer lag if its processor, graphics hardware, thermal performance or available storage is weak.
What happens on Android 8 or older?
An older device may continue to open existing worlds and access previously purchased Marketplace content after its final supported update, but it will stop receiving current game updates. Mojang also warns that older operating systems can lose compatibility with newer multiplayer devices and some servers. That is different from saying the game becomes instantly unusable the moment support ends.
There is also a practical difference between cannot install, can install but no longer updates, and runs poorly despite meeting the minimum. Google Play may block installation entirely when compatibility checks fail; an already-installed game on a sunset operating system may remain usable locally but fall behind the current Bedrock release.
iPhone and iPad requirements
The current US App Store listing says Minecraft requires iOS 13.0 or later and iPadOS 13.0 or later. The listing showed an app size of approximately 1.6 GB in the research snapshot, but the download size changes and does not represent all the free space needed for updates, worlds, cached files or Marketplace content.

There is an important support distinction: Mojang’s iOS operating-system guidance says iOS/iPadOS 14 and above are required to continue receiving Minecraft updates and playing online after the March 2025 support change. In other words, the App Store may allow installation on iOS/iPadOS 13, while iOS/iPadOS 14 or later is the safer threshold for current support and online play. Check both the live listing and Mojang’s support page before buying for an older Apple device.
Do you need a Microsoft account?
You need the platform store account to buy the app: a Google Account on Android or an Apple Account on iPhone and iPad. A Microsoft account is separate and is used for Minecraft’s connected features. Mojang’s account guidance indicates that mobile multiplayer and related advanced features require Microsoft account sign-in.

- Enter the Microsoft account credentials.
- Select Let’s Go.
- Wait a few seconds for the profile and previously purchased Marketplace content to load.
A Microsoft account can connect supported Minecraft features and Marketplace content across platforms. It does not automatically transfer the base mobile app purchase from Google Play to Apple’s App Store. The purchase entitlement remains controlled by the platform store account, so an Android-to-iPhone move should be treated as a separate store purchase unless the relevant store or Mojang support page explicitly confirms otherwise.
Can Android players play with iPhone users?
Yes, Android and iPhone/iPad players can play together when they are using compatible versions of Bedrock Edition and have the required account and multiplayer setup. Bedrock cross-play also extends to other supported Bedrock platforms.
A Java Edition player cannot simply join a normal mobile Bedrock world. Java and Bedrock are separate editions with different servers, mod systems and multiplayer compatibility. When playing with friends, confirm that everyone is using Bedrock and that the host’s privacy, account and multiplayer settings allow the connection.
The mobile game includes Survival and Creative modes, building, crafting, exploration and combat. It also supports Marketplace content, add-ons, community servers, Realms services and compatible controllers. Realms, Minecoins, Marketplace items and other optional purchases are not included in the base app price.

How to update Minecraft on mobile
Android
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your account profile icon.
- Tap Manage apps & devices.
- Open Updates available.
- Find Minecraft.
- Tap Update.
iPhone and iPad
- Open the App Store.
- Tap the account profile icon.
- Scroll to the pending updates list.
- Find Minecraft.
- Tap Update.
Mojang documents both procedures in its mobile update guide. To check the installed game version, open Minecraft and look at the bottom-right corner of the title screen. Do not rely on a single universal latest-version number: mobile releases can roll out at different times, and store pages can refresh or cache information differently. For example, the supplied August 10, 2026 snapshot showed version 26.40 on the App Store and 26.33 on Google Play. Compare the number in your game with the version shown in your own store listing.
What to do if Minecraft will not install on Android
Start with low-risk checks before removing any Minecraft files:
- Make sure the device has enough free storage for the app and its update process.
- Check whether Google Play labels the device as compatible.
- Update Android and Google Play services where updates are available.
- Restart the phone or tablet.
- Reopen Google Play and try the installation again.
- Confirm that the purchase was made with the Google Account currently active in Google Play.
- Do not switch to an unrelated APK site simply because the store installation failed.
Google’s Google Play installation guidance is the appropriate starting point for store, account and download errors.

Last-resort cleanup for partial or old Minecraft files
Mojang provides a more invasive Android procedure for installation errors caused by partial downloads or old Minecraft/Beta files. Back up your worlds before following it. Deleting Minecraft data can permanently remove locally stored worlds.
- Back up your worlds first.
- Connect the Android device to a computer with a USB cable.
- On the device, select File Transfer or MTP.
- Locate
Android/data/com.mojang.minecraftpe. - Delete the
com.mojang.minecraftpefolder. - Disconnect the device.
- Reinstall Minecraft from Google Play.
- If that folder is absent, check for older files under
/games/com.mojang/minecraftWorlds.
Follow the complete Mojang Android installation-error procedure rather than deleting random folders. Android’s scoped-storage rules can also restrict access to Android/data, so a normal file-manager app may not be able to see every path.
Back up or transfer Android worlds
Minecraft for Android has two relevant file-storage modes:
- Application: the default mode. Worlds are stored inside Minecraft’s application data and are not ordinarily available as files for manual computer backup.
- External: worlds are stored in an accessible location and can be backed up or transferred, subject to Android’s file-access restrictions.
To change the setting, open Minecraft and go to Settings > Storage > File Storage Location, then choose External if you need manual file access. Mojang identifies the external world path as:
Android/data/com.mojang.minecraftpe/files/games/com.mojang/minecraftWorldsChanging the setting does not automatically make every existing world appear in the new location. Back up worlds before uninstalling Minecraft, deleting app data, changing storage settings, joining a Beta or performing installation cleanup. Stable Minecraft, Android Beta and iOS Preview
The normal Google Play or App Store listing installs the stable consumer client. Development builds are optional and should not be used as a workaround for a blocked or incompatible stable installation.
Android Beta
- Open the Minecraft listing in Google Play.
- Scroll to the bottom of the listing.
- Select Join Beta.
- Confirm by selecting Join.
To leave, return to the same area and select Leave. Android Beta replaces the normal Minecraft client, and Mojang recommends backing up worlds before joining because development builds can be unstable.
iOS Preview
iPhone and iPad Preview builds are distributed through Apple’s TestFlight and have limited capacity. They are development versions and may contain bugs, crashes or compatibility problems. Mojang’s Preview installation guide covers the current enrollment process.
Family purchases and sharing
Do not promise that one purchase automatically covers every family member or every device. Google Play Family Library can share eligible purchased apps and games with up to five family members, but eligibility must be checked for the live listing and in the relevant region. In-app purchases are not shared through Google Play Family Library; that includes applicable Marketplace-related purchases.

Apple Family Sharing can share eligible apps, but developers decide whether an app supports it. Check the App Store listing’s Supports section and your family’s Apple Account and region settings. The Google Play Family Library guidance and Apple Family Sharing guidance describe the platform rules, which can change.

It can. Always back up local worlds before uninstalling, deleting the com.mojang.minecraftpe folder, clearing app data, switching storage modes or joining Beta. Worlds stored in Application mode may not be available as ordinary files, so review Mojang’s Android world-storage guidance first.
Is Minecraft Java Edition the version on phones?
No. Phones and tablets use Minecraft Bedrock Edition. Java Edition is the separate PC edition for Windows, macOS and Linux, with a different multiplayer and mod ecosystem.
