Yes—Xbox Game Bar can usually be uninstalled from Windows 11. If the Uninstall button is missing in Settings, remove its Microsoft Store/AppX package with PowerShell. The standard command removes Game Bar for the current user only; use the all-user command only when you deliberately want to remove it from every existing account.
Xbox Game Bar is separate from the Xbox app, Gaming Services, Xbox Identity Provider, Xbox TCUI, and other Xbox components. The instructions below target Game Bar only.
Before uninstalling Xbox Game Bar
Windows may display the app as Xbox Game Bar or simply Game Bar. Its common AppX package name is Microsoft.XboxGamingOverlay, and its Microsoft Store product ID is 9NZKPSTSNW4P. You can verify the Store listing at Microsoft’s Xbox Game Bar page.
Removing the package disables Game Bar features for the user or users from whom it is removed, including:

Game Bar recordings are normally stored in Videos\Captures. These features are documented by Microsoft’s Game Bar shortcut and recording guidance.
Uninstalling Game Bar does not automatically uninstall the Xbox app, Gaming Services, Xbox accounts, or PC Game Pass components. Do not use broad commands such as Get-AppxPackage *xbox* | Remove-AppxPackage or Get-AppxPackage *gaming* | Remove-AppxPackage unless you intentionally want to remove several unrelated packages.
Choose between uninstalling and disabling
| Your goal | Best option |
|---|---|
| Remove Game Bar from your account | Use the current-user PowerShell command. |
| Remove it from every existing account | Use the elevated PowerShell command with -AllUsers. |
| Stop a controller from opening Game Bar | Turn off the controller shortcut in Settings. |
| Stop background activity while keeping the app | Set background permissions to Never and terminate the app, where those controls are available. |
| Keep recording and overlay features | Leave Game Bar installed and use its settings, repair, or reset options. |
| Prevent installation for future users on managed PCs | Use Microsoft’s supported policy-based removal feature on eligible Enterprise or Education devices. |
Method 1: Uninstall Xbox Game Bar from Settings
Try the graphical method first:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Xbox Game Bar or Game Bar.
- Select the three-dot menu next to the app.
- Choose Uninstall, if the option is available.
Microsoft’s Windows uninstall guidance notes that some apps cannot be uninstalled through Settings. Game Bar may therefore appear in the list without an active Uninstall button.
On some newer Windows 11 builds, Game Bar is also listed under Settings > System > System components. That page is useful for Advanced options, repair, reset, background permissions, and termination, but its presence does not guarantee that Windows will offer package removal there. The location and labels can vary by Windows 11 build.
Method 2: Uninstall Game Bar with PowerShell
PowerShell is the most consistent method when Settings does not provide an Uninstall button. The following command removes the Game Bar package for the currently signed-in user:
Get-AppxPackage -Name '*Microsoft.XboxGamingOverlay*' | Remove-AppxPackage
Steps
- Right-click Start.
- Open Terminal (Admin) or PowerShell (Admin). Administrator access is not normally required for a current-user removal, but using an elevated terminal is convenient if you may need the later all-user or provisioning commands.
- Paste the command and press Enter.
- Close any open Game Bar overlay. If it was running, sign out and back in or restart Windows before testing.
Get-AppxPackage searches the installed AppX packages for the current account. Remove-AppxPackage then removes the matching package from that account. Microsoft documents this user-scoped behavior in the Remove-AppxPackage reference.
Verify the removal
Run this command:
Get-AppxPackage -Name '*Microsoft.XboxGamingOverlay*'
If PowerShell returns no package information, Game Bar is no longer installed for the current user. No output from this verification command is normally a successful result, not an error.
If the package is installed as a bundle and the first command does not find it, inspect bundle packages with:

Get-AppxPackage -PackageTypeFilter Bundle | Where-Object Name -like '*XboxGamingOverlay*'
Only use the bundle-removal form if that query returns a matching package:
Get-AppxPackage -PackageTypeFilter Bundle | Where-Object Name -like '*XboxGamingOverlay*' | Remove-AppxPackage
Package type and Windows build can affect which query returns a result. Do not repeatedly run increasingly broad commands against every package containing xbox or gaming.
Remove Game Bar for every existing user
The regular PowerShell command does not remove copies installed in other user profiles. To remove Game Bar for all existing user accounts, open Terminal (Admin) and run:
Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers -Name '*Microsoft.XboxGamingOverlay*' | Remove-AppxPackage -AllUsers
This is a device-wide operation and requires administrator permissions. It is broader than the normal current-user command, so it is usually unnecessary on a personal PC with only one account.
If Windows reports a package-type or package-selection error, identify the exact package first:
Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers | Where-Object Name -like '*XboxGamingOverlay*' | Select-Object Name, PackageFullName, PackageFamilyName
Then remove the exact PackageFullName returned by that command:
Remove-AppxPackage -Package '<PackageFullName returned above>' -AllUsers
Do not change ownership of the WindowsApps folder or delete package folders manually. That can damage package registration and creates problems that the supported AppX commands avoid.
Stop Game Bar from being provisioned for future users
Windows has a separate concept called an AppX provisioned package. Provisioning controls whether an app is automatically added when a new user profile is created. It is different from packages already installed in existing profiles.

First check whether Game Bar is provisioned in the Windows image:
Get-AppxProvisionedPackage -Online | Where-Object DisplayName -like '*XboxGamingOverlay*'
If the command returns a matching package, remove it from the provisioning list with an elevated PowerShell window:
Get-AppxProvisionedPackage -Online | Where-Object DisplayName -like '*XboxGamingOverlay*' | Remove-AppxProvisionedPackage -Online
Alternatively, note the returned package name and remove that exact package:
Remove-AppxProvisionedPackage -Online -PackageName '<PackageName returned above>'
Important: removing a provisioned package does not remove Game Bar from existing user profiles. You may need both operations:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Use
Remove-AppxPackagefor installed copies in the current or existing accounts. - Use
Remove-AppxProvisionedPackage -Onlineto stop automatic installation for newly created users.
This is an advanced, image-level change and is not normally needed for a single-user home computer. See Microsoft’s Remove-AppxProvisionedPackage documentation for the distinction between provisioning and installed user packages.
Use WinGet instead
WinGet can uninstall Game Bar when the Microsoft Store source is available. The Store product ID is 9NZKPSTSNW4P. Search for the exact listing first:
winget search --id 9NZKPSTSNW4P --source msstore --exact
If the search identifies Xbox Game Bar, uninstall it with:
winget uninstall --id 9NZKPSTSNW4P --source msstore --exact
WinGet supports filtering by product ID, source, and exact match. Microsoft also documents that WinGet can uninstall packages that were not originally installed through WinGet. The relevant references are WinGet search and WinGet uninstall.

PowerShell is the better fallback if:
wingetis not recognized;- the Microsoft Store source is unavailable or stale;
- WinGet asks for source agreements and cannot complete them; or
- the search returns multiple or unexpected results.
If you specifically want to repair WinGet, Microsoft’s WinGet troubleshooting guidance covers App Installer and source maintenance.
If you only want Game Bar to stop opening
Uninstalling is unnecessary if the problem is an accidental controller launch or background activity.
Disable the controller shortcut
- Open Settings > Gaming > Xbox Game Bar.
- Turn off Open Xbox Game Bar using this button on a controller.
This keeps Game Bar available for recording and the Win + G shortcut while preventing the controller button from launching it. The setting is described in Microsoft’s Game Bar documentation.
Stop background operation
Where your Windows 11 build exposes Game Bar as a system component:
- Open Settings > System > System components.
- Find Game Bar.
- Open Advanced options.
- Set Background component permissions to Never.
- Select Terminate.
This is a lower-risk alternative to uninstalling. It may stop background activity, but it does not necessarily prevent every activation—especially Win + G or an application that invokes Game Bar directly.
Disable capture without removing the package
For advanced users, Windows exposes Game Bar and Game DVR settings through registry values. Microsoft’s Windows 11 settings reference documents the relevant Game Bar and Game DVR settings. Community troubleshooting commonly uses these per-user DWORD values:
| Registry location | Value | Data |
|---|---|---|
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\GameDVR |
AppCaptureEnabled |
0 |
HKCU\System\GameConfigStore |
GameDVR_Enabled |
0 |
These values are a disablement workaround, not an uninstall method. They can disable capture/Game DVR behavior while leaving the AppX package installed. Before editing the registry, create a restore point or export the affected keys. If you do not need capture disabled specifically, the Settings controls are safer and easier to reverse.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| There is no Uninstall button in Settings. | That Windows build treats Game Bar as a packaged or system-component app that Settings cannot remove. | Use the current-user PowerShell command or the WinGet product ID method. |
| PowerShell returns no output. | Game Bar may already be absent for the current user, the package name may differ, or it may exist only for another account or in provisioning. | Run the current-user, all-user, and provisioned-package checks separately:
|
| Access is denied. | An all-user or provisioned-package operation needs elevation. | Close the terminal, right-click Start, open Terminal (Admin), and rerun the command. |
winget is not recognized. |
WinGet or its App Installer component is unavailable or damaged. | Use PowerShell instead, or follow Microsoft’s WinGet troubleshooting steps. |
| Windows says, “Get an app to open this ms-gamingoverlay link.” | A controller, game, or Windows component is still trying to invoke Game Bar through its URI scheme. The same situation can involve ms-gamebar. |
If you intended to remove Game Bar, turn off the controller shortcut and remove the application trigger. If you need the overlay, reinstall Game Bar from the Microsoft Store. Reinstalling only the Xbox app is not guaranteed to restore Game Bar. |
| The command fails because Game Bar is open. | The package may be in use. | Close the overlay and related Xbox processes, then retry. If necessary, restart Windows and run the command again from an elevated terminal. |
| Game Bar returns later. | Availability can change through Store installation, user provisioning, Windows recovery or reset, servicing, or organizational management. | Remove installed copies and, where appropriate, the provisioned package. Managed Enterprise and Education devices can use Microsoft’s policy-based removal feature. |
Fixing the ms-gamingoverlay prompt
The ms-gamingoverlay and ms-gamebar addresses are URI schemes used to call Game Bar. Uninstalling the package does not automatically remove every shortcut, controller setting, game setting, or third-party tool that tries to use those addresses. Windows then has no installed handler and displays the prompt.

Choose the fix based on your goal:
- You do not want Game Bar: disable the controller toggle and stop the application or controller action that invokes the URI.
- You want Game Bar recording or overlays: reinstall it from the Microsoft Store listing.
- You only want capture disabled: leave the package installed and use the Game Bar settings or the advanced Game DVR controls described above.
How to reinstall Xbox Game Bar
Uninstallation is reversible. Open the official Xbox Game Bar Microsoft Store listing and select Install. You can also check Microsoft Store > Library for the app.
After installation, sign out and back in or restart Windows if Win + G still produces an error. If the app is installed but malfunctioning, open its Advanced options from Installed apps or System components and try Repair first, followed by Reset if necessary. Microsoft’s Microsoft Store app troubleshooting guidance covers additional repair steps.
For managed Enterprise and Education PCs
Microsoft provides a policy-based removal feature for supported managed Windows 11 devices running version 24H2 or newer. It is intended for Windows 11 Enterprise and Education deployments and is administered through Group Policy or MDM. The policy can keep selected preinstalled Microsoft Store apps blocked from reinstallation while it remains active.
This is different from running Remove-AppxPackage on a personal PC. Windows 11 Home and Pro users should normally use Settings, PowerShell, WinGet, or the disablement controls above. Administrators can consult Microsoft’s policy-based inbox app removal documentation and Microsoft support guidance for preinstalled Store app removal.
Do not confuse package removal with permanent removal
PowerShell removes the installed package for the scope you select; it does not make Game Bar an inseparable part of Windows or guarantee that the app can never become available again. The Store, a Windows reset or recovery process, provisioning, servicing, or an organization’s management policy can change app availability later.
The safest targeted approach is therefore:
- Use the Settings uninstall option if Windows provides it.
- Otherwise remove only
Microsoft.XboxGamingOverlayfor the current user. - Use
-AllUsersonly when every existing account should lose Game Bar. - Use provisioned-package removal only when you also need to control newly created users.
- Leave Xbox app, Gaming Services, and other Xbox packages alone unless you have a separate reason to remove them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will uninstalling Xbox Game Bar break my games?
It does not uninstall ordinary games or automatically remove the Xbox app or Gaming Services. However, games or tools that depend on Game Bar’s overlay, capture controls, widgets, or URI schemes may lose those features or show an ms-gamingoverlay prompt. Reinstall Game Bar if you need those integrations.
Why does Windows still try to open Game Bar after I removed it?
A controller, game, or another application can still invoke the ms-gamingoverlay or ms-gamebar URI scheme. Disable the controller shortcut or reinstall Game Bar from its Microsoft Store listing, depending on whether you want the feature.
Does the normal PowerShell command remove Game Bar for everyone?
No. Get-AppxPackage ... | Remove-AppxPackage normally removes the package for the current user. Removing it from all existing accounts requires an elevated terminal and -AllUsers. Preventing installation for future users is a separate provisioned-package operation.
The Bottom Line
For one Windows 11 account, run Get-AppxPackage -Name '*Microsoft.XboxGamingOverlay*' | Remove-AppxPackage. Use the elevated -AllUsers version only for every existing account, and do not remove broad Xbox or gaming package groups. If you only want to stop accidental launches, disable the controller shortcut or background permissions instead.
