Verdict: Nintendo did announce its Switch successor within the timeframe implied by the headline, but the wording needs correction. Nintendo officially unveiled and named Nintendo Switch 2 on January 16, 2025, after promising in May 2024 to announce the successor before the end of its fiscal year on March 31, 2025. However, there is no confirmed evidence in The Game Awards’ official public record that TGA reported or revealed the console.
The January video was a first look, not the complete product presentation. Nintendo detailed the hardware, features, price, and release date during a dedicated Direct on April 2, 2025. Switch 2 launched on June 5, 2025, with a U.S. system price of $449.99.
What the original three-month claim actually meant
In May 2024, Nintendo confirmed that it would announce the successor to the Nintendo Switch during its current fiscal year. For Nintendo, that fiscal year ran from April 1, 2024, through March 31, 2025. The promise therefore established a firm deadline: the announcement had to happen by March 31, 2025.
That is not the same as saying the new console would be released within three months. Nintendo had not announced a launch date, price, technical specifications, product name, reveal venue, or launch lineup at that point. It had only confirmed that an announcement was coming.

- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*

The phrase “in the next three months” also depends on when the headline was published. In May 2024, the deadline was almost eleven months away. By late December 2024 or early January 2025, however, March 31 was approximately three months away. Without the original publication date, the relative wording cannot be treated as a precise countdown.
Nintendo also said that its June 2024 Nintendo Direct would not discuss the successor, making that presentation an especially poor candidate for the promised announcement. The company’s May investor material and contemporaneous reporting are documented by Nintendo’s investor Q&A and Ars Technica’s report.
What Nintendo confirmed in May 2024—and what it did not
Nintendo’s statement confirmed the existence of a successor at the corporate-planning level and committed the company to announcing it within the fiscal-year window. It did not confirm:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- that the console would be called Nintendo Switch 2;
- the date on which Nintendo would show it;
- when the hardware would launch;
- how much it would cost;
- its processor, screen, storage, or performance specifications;
- that The Game Awards would host or report the announcement; or
- which games would accompany the hardware.
The May investor Q&A also indicated that development had been underway for years while Nintendo continued supporting the existing Switch. That combination explains why Nintendo could commit to an announcement without disclosing the product’s commercial details or launch schedule.
Did The Game Awards report or reveal Switch 2?
If “TGA” means The Game Awards, the official record does not substantiate the headline’s attribution. The official recap of The Game Awards 2024 highlights announcements such as The Witcher 4, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, and the Okami sequel, but does not list a Nintendo Switch 2 console announcement.

Contemporaneous Nintendo coverage reached the same practical conclusion. Nintendo Life’s reaction to the event described Nintendo’s presence as limited and discussed whether some of the event’s games might eventually run on Switch 2. It did not report an official Switch 2 reveal during the show.
That does not prove that no individual journalist, insider, social-media account, or publication using the initials TGA discussed the possibility. The initials could refer to something other than The Game Awards, or the headline could have compressed speculation surrounding the event into a more authoritative-sounding claim. But the original report would be needed before attributing the announcement to TGA.
The careful conclusion is therefore: Nintendo’s fiscal-year deadline was official; a TGA-sourced Switch 2 announcement was not established by the official Game Awards record.

The November compatibility announcement is documented in Nintendo’s November 6, 2024 Q&A. The January timing rumor was summarized by Android Headlines, which attributed the claim to NateTheHate. The rumor’s timing turned out to be broadly accurate, but that does not validate every other detail attached to it.
What Nintendo announced on January 16
Nintendo’s January 16 video was more than a vague teaser. It officially identified the product as Nintendo Switch 2, showed the revised hardware, confirmed a 2025 release, and said the system would play compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. The announcement is preserved in Nintendo’s official release.

- 6.2” LCD screen.
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
It was nevertheless not the complete reveal. The video did not provide the final U.S. price, an exact launch date, or the full technical briefing. It also did not establish that every original Switch title would work without limitations. Nintendo’s wording was compatibility with compatible physical and digital games, leaving room for titles that might not be supported or might require additional conditions.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Using the terminology precisely:
- Announcement: January 16, 2025, when Nintendo named Switch 2 and gave the first official look.
- Detailed reveal: April 2, 2025, when Nintendo presented the product’s commercial and technical details.
- Launch: June 5, 2025, when the console became available.
Calling January 16 the “full reveal” understates what Nintendo held back. Calling it merely a “tease” is also inaccurate because Nintendo formally announced the product and its 2025 release.
What Nintendo confirmed in the April 2 Direct
The dedicated Nintendo Switch 2 Direct supplied the details that were missing from the January first look. Nintendo confirmed the following:
- U.S. launch date: June 5, 2025.
- U.S. system price: $449.99.
- U.S. Mario Kart World bundle: $499.99.
- Display: a larger screen than the original Switch.
- Controllers: new Joy-Con 2 controllers that attach magnetically.
- Input: mouse controls in compatible games.
- Storage: 256 GB of internal storage.
- Video output: up to 4K output and up to 120 frames per second in compatible games and displays.
- Compatibility: support for compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games.
- Online services: continued Nintendo Switch Online support.
- Communication and multiplayer: GameChat and GameShare features.
The prices above are U.S. figures and should not be presented as a worldwide MSRP. Nintendo’s launch announcement also retained the compatibility caveat: some Switch games might not be supported or might not be fully compatible. The complete launch information is available in Nintendo’s June 5 launch announcement.
What happened after the announcement?
Switch 2 followed the January announcement with the April detailed presentation and then launched on June 5, 2025. The eventual outcome means the original headline is directionally right about the announcement window, but wrong or unsupported if it suggests that The Game Awards was the confirmed source.

The story is also no longer forward-looking. As of August 10, 2026, Switch 2 is an established, released platform rather than an upcoming rumor. Nintendo’s dedicated hardware and software sales table records 23.68 million Switch 2 hardware units and 58.17 million Switch 2 software units worldwide as of June 30, 2026. These are consolidated life-to-date figures, as reported in Nintendo’s official sales data.
Nintendo’s August 6, 2026 financial material separately reports 3.82 million Switch 2 hardware units and 9.46 million software units for the April–June 2026 quarter. Those quarterly figures should not be casually mixed with the life-to-date totals: Nintendo’s financial reporting distinguishes measures such as sell-in shipments to commercial partners from sell-through sales to individual consumers. The quarterly figures are discussed in Nintendo’s Q1 FY2027 financial material.

| Nintendo would announce a Switch successor by March 31, 2025. | Confirmed | Nintendo made that commitment in May 2024 for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2025. |
| The announcement was coming within the next three months. | Time-dependent | This was a reasonable description only for a headline published around late December 2024 or early January 2025, not for the original May statement. |
| The Game Awards officially announced Switch 2. | Not supported | The official TGA 2024 recap does not list a Switch 2 console reveal, and contemporaneous coverage did not report one. |

| The January announcement was the full reveal. | Incorrect | The detailed presentation came later, in the April 2 Nintendo Direct. |
| Switch 2 plays original Switch games. | Confirmed with a caveat | Nintendo supports compatible physical and digital games, but warned that some titles may not be supported or fully compatible. |
| Switch 2 launched. | Confirmed | The console launched on June 5, 2025, with a U.S. system price of $449.99. |
How to describe the headline accurately today
A corrected version would be: Nintendo promised to announce its Switch successor by March 31, 2025, then officially revealed Nintendo Switch 2 on January 16—but The Game Awards was not the confirmed source.
That wording preserves the important part of the original story while removing its biggest ambiguities. Nintendo did meet the official deadline. A January 16 timing rumor preceded the announcement and was broadly vindicated. But the console was not revealed at The Game Awards 2024, January was not the complete product presentation, and the “next three months” language should always be anchored to an absolute date.

Was January 16, 2025, the full Switch 2 reveal?
No. January 16 was Nintendo’s first official look and name announcement. Nintendo held the detailed Switch 2 Direct on April 2, 2025, where it announced the price, launch date, hardware features, and software information.
Can Nintendo Switch 2 play every original Switch game?
Nintendo confirmed support for compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but did not promise unconditional compatibility with every title. It warned that some games might not be supported or fully compatible.
When did Switch 2 launch and how much did it cost?

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Nintendo did fulfill its May 2024 promise by announcing Nintendo Switch 2 on January 16, 2025, before the March 31 fiscal-year deadline. The Game Awards was not established as the source of that announcement, and January’s first look should not be confused with the full April reveal. Switch 2 ultimately launched on June 5, 2025, making the original rumor headline historical rather than current news.
