Short answer: To install mods on PC, use Minecraft: Java Edition, choose the exact Minecraft version supported by your mod or modpack, install the matching loader—Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge—and place the correct .jar files in that installation’s mods folder. Keep your vanilla installation separate, launch the loader once before adding mods, and back up important worlds before changing versions.
This guide covers Windows, macOS, and Linux. It does not apply to Bedrock Edition, which uses add-ons and Marketplace content rather than Java mods. Minecraft’s current year-based numbering also makes version matching more important than ever: the latest release confirmed in the supplied official research is Java Edition 26.2, released June 16, 2026, but the newest vanilla release is not necessarily the best version for your mod collection.
What you need before installing Minecraft mods
- A purchased, working copy of Minecraft: Java Edition and the official Minecraft Launcher. Mojang describes the launcher as the central place to download, manage, and update PC Minecraft installations; see the official Minecraft download page.
- A target Minecraft version chosen from the mod’s project page—not simply the newest version shown in the launcher.
- One compatible mod loader: Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge. These are separate ecosystems. A Fabric mod normally cannot be put into a Forge or NeoForge instance, and a Forge mod normally cannot be put into Fabric.
- The mod’s required libraries and dependencies, such as Fabric API when the project lists it.
- A safe download source, preferably the mod author’s verified page on Modrinth or CurseForge.
- A backup of any world you care about. Mojang warns that opening a world in an older Minecraft version can permanently damage it, so version experiments should happen on a copy.
Start with compatibility, not the latest release
Before downloading a loader or a JAR file, open the mod’s official Modrinth or CurseForge project page and write down four things:
- the supported Minecraft version, such as 26.1 or 26.2;
- the required loader, such as Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge;
- the required Java version, if the loader or project specifies one; and
- every required dependency and its compatible version.
These values must line up. A mod marked for Fabric 26.2 is not automatically usable with Forge 26.2, and a mod released for 26.1 is not automatically usable with 26.2. CurseForge explains that mod files and profiles are tied to particular game versions and loaders and are treated as incompatible when those values do not match; its modpack compatibility documentation is useful even if you are installing individual mods.

Minecraft changed to year-led version numbers in the 26.x generation. The official announcement explains the new numbering system, while the Java Edition 26.2 release page confirms the June 16, 2026 release. Check the launcher and the project page immediately before installing because loader and mod support can lag behind a new Minecraft release. Fabric’s player documentation specifically warns that compatibility can change even between closely related versions.
Practical rule: choose the newest version that the entire mod collection supports, not necessarily the newest version that vanilla Minecraft supports. If five desired mods support 26.1 but one has not yet been updated for 26.2, 26.1 may be the sensible target.
Choose the right mod loader

Fabric
Fabric is a separate, lightweight modding platform with its own installer and mod ecosystem. Fabric’s official player documentation provides the normal installation flow: close Minecraft and the launcher, run the Fabric Installer, choose the desired Minecraft version, leave profile creation enabled, install, and then select the new Fabric profile in the official launcher.
Many—but not all—Fabric mods require Fabric API. Treat it as a dependency to check rather than an automatic requirement. Download it from the project’s Modrinth or CurseForge listing, match it to the same Minecraft version, and install it alongside the mod when the project lists it. Fabric’s installing-mods documentation and finding-mods guidance are the appropriate references.

Forge
Forge remains a major mod-loader ecosystem, but its official documentation is primarily aimed at developers. Do not download the Forge MDK as though it were the normal player installation package. Use the player installation method supplied by the current Forge download page or a reputable launcher, then make sure the resulting launcher profile is Forge-enabled before adding Forge mod JARs. The Forge getting-started documentation confirms the underlying rule: Forge mods are placed in the mods folder of a Forge-enabled Minecraft setup.
NeoForge
NeoForge is a separate modern loader with an official player guide. Its user documentation directs single-player users to the NeoForge client-installation instructions for the official Mojang launcher.
Do not apply an old Java rule to every Minecraft release. NeoForge documents Java 17 for Minecraft 1.20.2–1.20.4 and Java 21 for Minecraft 1.20.5 through the releases covered by that documentation. For the newer 26.x generation, Minecraft 26.1 release notes state that the bundled Java distribution moved to Microsoft OpenJDK 25. Follow the installer and loader instructions for the exact release you selected rather than manually replacing Java without a reason.

- Open Minecraft: Java Edition.
- Open the Installations tab.
- Select New installation.
- Give it a descriptive name, such as
Fabric 26.2 - Test,Forge 26.1 - Mods, orNeoForge 26.2 - Pack. - Choose the exact Minecraft version that your mod collection supports.
- Save the installation and launch that named profile—not Latest Release.
Mojang’s launcher troubleshooting instructions describe this separate-installation workflow. If the launcher exposes a Game Directory field, using a separate directory for a substantial modded setup makes it easier to keep worlds, configuration files, and mods isolated from vanilla. It also makes it harder to accidentally test a modded world in the wrong profile.
A graphical Minecraft modpack launcher or instance manager is another option for players who do not want to manage folders manually. CurseForge creates separate Minecraft modding environments and supports profiles for Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, Quilt, and Vanilla. Its profile tools automatically restrict many available choices to compatible game versions and loaders. That automation is convenient, but it does not remove the underlying requirement to read the modpack’s version and dependency information. Use the profile’s folder-opening control when you need to locate its files.
2. Install the loader
Fabric on Windows
- Close Minecraft and the official launcher.
- Download the Fabric Installer from the official Fabric Windows installation guide.
- Open the installer and choose the Minecraft version identified in step one.
- Keep Create profile enabled unless you intentionally use another instance manager.
- Select Install.
- Reopen the official launcher and select the new Fabric profile.
For this Windows installer path, Fabric says the executable uses the Java bundled with the official launcher, so a separate Java installation is not normally required just to run the installer. That does not mean every loader, server, or custom launcher has identical Java requirements.
Forge or NeoForge
Use the current player installer or launcher workflow for the selected loader. For Forge, consult the player-facing instructions associated with the current Forge download and confirm that the launcher profile is Forge-enabled before adding mods. For NeoForge, follow the official NeoForge user guide and verify the Java requirement for your exact Minecraft version. Do not install both loaders into one profile and expect their mods to mix.

3. Launch the clean loader profile once
Start the new Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge profile before adding any mods. This first launch lets the loader create its profile, game directory, and—where applicable—the mods folder. It also tells you whether the loader itself works before a mod or dependency complicates the diagnosis.
Reach the title screen, then exit Minecraft completely before copying files. If the clean loader profile fails at this stage, adding more JARs will not fix it; check the selected game version, installer, Java requirement, and launcher installation first.
4. Download the mod and dependencies
Return to the mod’s official project listing and select the file that matches all of the following:
- your Minecraft version;
- your loader;
- your operating system or required platform, if the project specifies one; and
- the dependency versions listed by the author.
Fabric recommends Modrinth and CurseForge as the principal sources used by most authors and warns players to avoid deceptive or malicious download sites. A normal Java mod is generally distributed as a .jar file. Be cautious if a download page gives you an executable installer, a browser extension, a “download manager,” or an unrelated archive. Use another source or the author’s verified official channel unless the project’s own instructions explicitly require a different format.

Read the project’s compatibility notes, not just the filename. Some projects publish separate client-only, server, library, or development files. Some require a library mod that is not bundled into the main download. Downloading only the visible main JAR is a common reason a loader reports a missing dependency.
5. Put the JAR files in the correct instance’s mods folder
For a standard Fabric installation using the official launcher and the default game directory, the usual locations are:

On Windows, press Win+R, enter %appdata%.minecraft, and press Enter. Open or create the mods folder. On macOS, in Finder select Go → Go to Folder and enter ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft. On Linux, open your home directory and enable hidden files if necessary, then open .minecraft.
Copy the downloaded mod and dependency files into that folder as .jar files. Do not unzip a mod JAR. Do not put it in resourcepacks, shaderpacks, saves, or the launcher’s general downloads folder.
Important: the path is instance-specific, not universal. CurseForge uses a separate Minecraft modding directory; its documented default Windows location is C:Users[user]curseforgeminecraft, with corresponding locations on macOS and Linux. If you launch a CurseForge profile, use that profile’s Open Folder control rather than copying files into %appdata%.minecraftmods. The same principle applies to Prism Launcher or any other instance manager: open the folder belonging to the instance you actually launch.
6. Launch with the modded profile
Select the matching loader profile and start the game. Depending on the loader and installed mods, you may see a loader or mod list on the title screen. If the game reaches the title screen without an error, create or load a test world first. Check the mod’s documented behavior before judging whether it is working; some mods add a menu, keybind, visual effect, or configuration screen rather than an obvious title-screen change.
Start with one or two mods. Launch, test, and then add more in small batches. This is slower than dropping in a large collection at once, but it gives you a known-good checkpoint and makes a dependency or compatibility failure much easier to identify.
Manual mods versus modpacks
Installing one or two individual mods manually is useful when you want control over every file. A modpack is different: it may include a fixed Minecraft version, loader, libraries, configuration files, resource packs, scripts, and a large set of interdependent mods. Use the pack’s official import or installation method in a reputable instance manager instead of downloading random individual files and trying to reconstruct the pack.

CurseForge’s profile-based workflow is convenient because it separates modding environments and filters many version and loader choices. The official launcher remains a good choice for a small manual setup, while an instance manager is usually less error-prone when you regularly switch between several packs. In either case, keep each profile’s game directory and world backups separate.
Back up worlds before changing versions
Changing loaders, removing gameplay mods, downgrading Minecraft, or updating a large modpack can affect world data. Mojang specifically warns that changing to an older Java Edition version can permanently damage a world. Before experimenting:
- Exit Minecraft fully so the world is not being written to.
- Use the game or launcher’s available world-backup control, or make a separate copy of the world folder.
- Label the copy with the Minecraft version, loader, and date.
- Test updates and downgrades on the copy first.
- Keep the original world untouched until the new setup has loaded and saved successfully.
A dedicated external SSD for Minecraft backups or USB backup drive can be useful if your worlds are important or you maintain several modpack instances. You do not need a particular brand, capacity, or drive speed for the basic backup task; the essential safeguard is having a second copy that is not being changed along with the original.

Modded Minecraft errors become much easier to solve when you separate the layers: launcher, Minecraft version, loader, mod file, dependency, configuration, and server. Change one layer at a time and preserve the last known-good setup.
“Incompatible mod set” or “missing dependency”
- Check the Minecraft version printed on every mod file’s project page.
- Check that every file belongs to the same loader.
- Read the required dependency list and install the stated library versions.
- For Fabric, verify whether Fabric API is required.
- Remove duplicate or older copies of the same library from the instance’s
modsfolder.
CurseForge identifies incompatible Minecraft versions, incompatible loaders, and combinations of both as common reasons a profile cannot accept a mod. If a project offers separate files for Fabric, Forge, and NeoForge, selecting the right Minecraft version alone is not enough.
The game crashes before the title screen
First remove the most recently added mod and its newly added dependency, then relaunch the last known-good set. If the crash stops, add files back one at a time or in small batches. If it continues, test the clean loader profile you created earlier.
Inspect the crash report and latest log for the first clear error naming a mod, dependency, class, or version. Avoid treating the final line of a long stack trace as automatically being the cause. Mojang’s launcher troubleshooting guidance recommends testing a new Java installation and then narrowing attention to downloaded mods or JVM settings when a clean installation works. In this context, a clean profile is a diagnostic comparison, not a reason to delete your original instance.
The game launches, but the mod does nothing
- Confirm you launched the modded profile rather than vanilla Latest Release.
- Confirm the JAR is in the active instance’s folder, not another installation’s
modsfolder. - Check whether the mod is client-only, server-only, or requires a separate library.
- Read the project page for a keybind, menu, configuration file, or required in-game action.
- Make sure the file is not a development build for a different Minecraft version.
The folder appears empty or the mods are not detected
This usually means the launcher is using a different game directory from the one you edited. Verify the selected installation in the official launcher and its game-directory setting. In a third-party launcher, open the active profile’s folder directly. A CurseForge profile commonly will not read files placed in the default %appdata%.minecraftmods folder because it maintains a separate modding environment.
A server rejects the player
Multiplayer modding must follow the server’s requirements. Ask the server operator for the exact Minecraft version, loader, mod list, and dependency versions. A client-only visual or interface mod may belong only on your computer, while a gameplay-changing mod generally needs corresponding server-side support. Never assume that a single-player collection can connect to an unmodded or differently modded server.

NeoForge’s documentation explains the distinction between physical client and server environments and why client-only classes or behavior can fail when loaded on a physical server. Its server guide also recommends removing client-side mods from servers when appropriate and backing up the world before updating NeoForge or mods. Apply the same cautious principle regardless of loader.
An update or downgrade breaks an older world
Stop and restore the backup rather than repeatedly opening the original world in different versions. Do not downgrade a world without a verified backup; Mojang warns that doing so can permanently damage it. For a major modpack update, preserve the old instance and world, duplicate the world, and test the new loader or mod list against the duplicate.

- Prefer Modrinth, CurseForge, or the author’s verified official channel.
- Confirm the project author, file name, Minecraft version, and loader before downloading.
- Expect a Java mod to be a JAR unless the project’s official instructions say otherwise.
- Avoid pages that force an executable, browser extension, “download manager,” or suspicious redirect.
- Scan questionable files, but do not treat an antivirus result as the only trust signal; source and file matching matter too.
- Keep backups before changing versions or installing mods that alter world generation or gameplay.
Fabric’s guidance says Modrinth and CurseForge check submitted mods and take action against malicious content, while also telling users to exercise judgment and avoid common malware sites. Fabric is an independent project, not an official Minecraft website or a Mojang-operated service. Treat loader teams, mod authors, launchers, and download platforms as separate from Mojang unless an official Mojang page explicitly says otherwise.

You do not need a gaming PC upgrade, graphics card, generic “Minecraft optimizer,” or 24/7 streaming service merely to install and play with Java mods. Performance problems should be diagnosed separately using the specific modpack’s documented requirements and reproducible testing.
For Windows users whose launcher remains unstable after checking the version, loader, dependencies, active instance, logs, clean installation, and backups, a clearly labeled third-party PC troubleshooting tool may be an optional last resort. Can I install Java mods on Minecraft Bedrock Edition?

Do I need to install Java separately to use Fabric?
