The safest way to uninstall a conventional PC game in Windows 11 is to use the launcher that installed it. For games managed directly by Windows, open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find the game, select its three-dot menu, choose Uninstall, and follow the game’s uninstaller.

Use the launcher when the game came from Steam, Epic Games Launcher, or the EA app. If Windows Settings does not offer a working uninstall option, use Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features. Do not begin by deleting the game’s folder from File Explorer: that can leave behind launcher records, services, save data, or a broken uninstall entry.

Before you uninstall: decide whether you want to delete or relocate the game

Uninstalling removes the game’s local installation and should reclaim most of the space it occupies, although the exact amount varies by title and launcher. It does not normally remove your account ownership or purchase entitlement. A game can usually be downloaded again from the same launcher or store account.

If you only need to free space on the Windows system drive temporarily, moving the installation may be better than deleting it. Steam supports adding another library location and moving installed games through its Storage settings. An internal secondary drive is generally preferable for game-library performance; Steam cautions that installing the Steam client on an external hard drive can create performance issues. See Steam’s storage and library-management guidance before moving an installation.

Need somewhere to keep a large game library? Compare external SSDs for PC gaming as an optional storage solution, but use an internal secondary drive when possible for the best launcher performance. You do not need to buy additional storage simply to uninstall a game.

How to uninstall a game through Windows 11 Settings

This is the best general method for a game installed as a Windows app, including many Microsoft Store and Xbox-related installations, and for desktop programs that register a normal Windows uninstall entry.

  1. Save your progress and close the game.
  2. Close the game launcher if it is running. If the launcher remains active, it may lock files or continue downloading updates.
  3. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  4. Use the search box or scroll through the list to find the game.
  5. Select the game’s three-dot menu.
  6. Choose Uninstall, then confirm.
  7. Complete the game’s own uninstaller if another window appears.

Windows 11 may show options such as Modify, Repair, or Advanced options instead of—or alongside—Uninstall. These controls vary by app. Microsoft’s current instructions and limitations are documented in its guide to uninstalling or removing apps and programs.

Uninstalling from the Start menu

Windows 11 also lets you remove many apps directly from the app list:

  1. Open Start and select All apps.
  2. Find the game, right-click it, and choose Uninstall.
  3. Confirm and follow any uninstaller prompts.

If the menu does not contain Uninstall, or it opens an incomplete process, return to Settings > Apps > Installed apps or use Control Panel.

How to uninstall a game from Control Panel

Some traditional desktop games do not expose a usable uninstall command in Windows 11 Settings. Control Panel is the appropriate fallback—not manual deletion.

  • The available storage capacity may vary.
  1. Open Start, type Control Panel, and open it.
  2. Under Programs, select Uninstall a program. This opens Programs and Features.
  3. Find the game in the list.
  4. Right-click it and choose Uninstall or Uninstall/Change.
  5. Follow the publisher’s uninstaller through to completion.

If the game is not listed in either Settings or Control Panel, it may be portable software, launcher-managed software, or an installation with damaged uninstall information. Use the relevant launcher instructions below before considering any manual cleanup.

Launcher-specific instructions

Steam

To uninstall one Steam game:

  1. Open Steam and select Library.
  2. Right-click the game in your library, or select its gear/options menu.
  3. Choose Manage, then Uninstall.
  4. Confirm the removal.

The exact menu appearance can change with Steam updates, but the operation is the same: remove the individual game from its Steam library rather than deleting its folder in File Explorer.

Do not confuse uninstalling a game with uninstalling Steam. Valve warns that removing the Steam client also removes Steam and installed game content from the Steam installation directory. If you are removing Steam itself but want to preserve installed games for a later reinstall, back up or move the steamapps folder before running the Steam uninstaller. Valve explains this distinction in its Steam removal and installation guidance.

Uninstalling a Steam game is not the same as deleting its cloud saves or canceling ownership. Save behavior depends on the game and on whether Steam Cloud or a separate publisher synchronization service is being used. Check the game’s save-storage information before removing local files if your progress matters.

Epic Games Launcher

  1. Open Epic Games Launcher.
  2. Select Library.
  3. Find the game.
  4. Select the game’s three-dot menu.
  5. Choose Uninstall.
  6. Confirm in the pop-up window.

Epic’s current procedure is described in its official game-uninstallation instructions. The game should be closed before you begin.

EA app

  1. Open the EA app and sign in.
  2. Select the game you want to remove.
  3. Choose Manage.
  4. Select Uninstall from the drop-down menu.
  5. Confirm if prompted.

EA also provides a fallback: open Control Panel > Uninstall a program, right-click the game, and select Uninstall. EA notes that uninstalling the EA app itself prevents access to games and downloaded extra content until the app is installed again. If you are removing only one game, uninstall the game rather than the EA app. The publisher’s steps are in its EA app and game removal guide.

Microsoft Store and Xbox installations

For many Microsoft Store and Xbox app games, start with Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Search for the game, open its three-dot menu, and choose Uninstall. Some Xbox components or launcher-related entries may remain because they are separate applications; do not remove those unless you intend to remove the corresponding service or app.

Uninstalling the local game does not remove the game from your Microsoft account. When you want it again, open Microsoft Store and select Library to find apps and games associated with the account. Microsoft describes the Store Library and account-based access in its guide to getting apps and games from Microsoft Store.

How to check whether the game was actually removed

After the uninstaller finishes:

  1. Restart Windows if the uninstaller requests it.
  2. Return to Settings > Apps > Installed apps and confirm that the game no longer appears, or that its entry no longer reports an installed size.
  3. Open Settings > System > Storage to check available space.
  4. Use Windows 11’s storage categories and Cleanup recommendations to identify remaining large or unused files.

Windows Storage Sense can remove temporary files and Recycle Bin contents, but it is not a replacement for the game’s uninstaller. Microsoft’s freeing drive space guidance explains these cleanup tools.

Do not expect a guaranteed amount of free space. A launcher may leave shared components, shader caches, screenshots, mods, configuration files, or save data behind. Those files can be useful, and deleting them is a separate decision from uninstalling the game.

If the game will not uninstall

Use this escalation order so that you do not damage unrelated software:

  1. Close everything related to the game. Exit the game, launcher, overlay, mod manager, and cloud-sync utility. Check Task Manager if a process is visibly stuck.
  2. Restart the PC. A restart can release locked files and complete a pending update or installer operation.
  3. Try Settings again. Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, open the game’s available options, and try Repair first if it is offered. If Repair does not help, try Reset where available. These controls are not supported by every desktop program, and Reset can remove app data.
  4. Try Control Panel. Use Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features and run Uninstall or Uninstall/Change.
  5. Use the launcher’s repair or verification feature. If the launcher reports missing or corrupted files, repairing the installation can restore the uninstaller. Once it is functional, uninstall from the launcher.
  6. Use Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter. Microsoft provides this tool for traditional desktop programs blocked by damaged installation or removal information. Its guidance is available at Fix problems that block programs from being installed or removed.
  7. Handle Microsoft Store problems separately. Store apps may require Store-specific troubleshooting rather than the traditional desktop-program troubleshooter.
  8. Scan if the software is suspicious. If you did not intentionally install the game, unexpected processes are running, or the program behaves like malware, use Windows Security to scan and clean threats before attempting more aggressive removal.

A third-party PC repair utility is not required for ordinary game removal. Windows’ own uninstall paths, Microsoft’s troubleshooter, and Windows Security should be tried first. Avoid registry cleaners and tools that promise to remove every leftover entry without explaining what they will delete.

What not to delete manually

Do not make these your first-line uninstall method:

  • the game’s folder under Program Files or Program Files (x86);
  • protected WindowsApps folders;
  • Steam, Epic, EA, Xbox, or other launcher folders;
  • registry keys associated with the game;
  • services or scheduled tasks you do not recognize.

Manual deletion can leave the game listed as installed, remove shared files needed by another title, break a launcher library, or delete saves and settings. Use manual cleanup only when the publisher gives specific instructions or an advanced support technician has identified the exact leftovers.

Save files, settings, mods, and screenshots

Uninstallers do not all treat personal data the same way. Depending on the game, saves and settings may be stored in the installation folder, Documents, Saved Games, AppData, the launcher’s cloud service, or a publisher account. Mods and screenshots may also live outside the installation directory.

Before uninstalling a game you may play again:

  • check whether Steam Cloud, Epic cloud saves, Xbox synchronization, or the publisher’s own cloud service is enabled;
  • make a separate backup of important local saves and screenshots;
  • record mod load orders or configuration files if rebuilding the installation will be difficult;
  • do not assume that cloud synchronization is enabled—or that every type of save is synchronized.

A small USB drive can be useful for backing up personal documents or configuration files, but it is not automatically a good full-game-library backup medium. Game installations are large, and a proper library backup or relocation plan may require a faster, larger drive and launcher-specific steps.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will uninstalling a game delete my save files?

Not always. Save handling varies by game and may involve local folders, Steam Cloud, Xbox or Microsoft synchronization, or a publisher service. Back up important local saves before uninstalling, and do not assume every save is synchronized.

Does uninstalling a game cancel my purchase or remove it from my account?

No. Removing the local installation is separate from account ownership. Steam, Epic, EA, Microsoft Store, and Xbox titles can generally be reinstalled through the account or library that owns them, subject to the platform’s current availability and account access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is a game still listed after I deleted its folder?

Deleting the folder bypasses the uninstaller and can leave registration data behind. Try the launcher, Windows Settings, or Control Panel. If the removal record is corrupted, use Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter rather than deleting registry keys at random.

Should I uninstall the launcher too?

Only if you intend to remove the launcher and its related access. To remove one game, uninstall the game inside Steam, Epic Games Launcher, the EA app, or Windows. Removing Steam or the EA app can affect access to other installed games or downloaded content.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: identify where the game came from, close it, and uninstall it through that launcher. For Windows-managed games, use Settings > Apps > Installed apps; if that fails or the game is missing, use Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features. Back up saves you care about, and never treat deleting a game folder as the normal uninstall procedure.
