Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThe most likely fixes are to confirm that everyone is using the same Minecraft edition and version, connect every computer to the same trusted home network, set that Windows network to Private, allow Minecraft or Java through Microsoft Defender Firewall, and re-host the world using the correct Java or Bedrock settings.
Java Edition and Bedrock Edition use different multiplayer systems, so a Java LAN world will not appear to a Bedrock player, and vice versa. Work through the checks below in order. The correct solution depends on whether the missing world is a Java LAN session, a Bedrock LAN world, or a wider Windows networking problem.
1. Confirm the Minecraft edition and version
Before changing Windows settings, make sure every player is launching the same edition:
- Java Edition players can join Java Edition LAN worlds.
- Bedrock Edition players can join Bedrock Edition local multiplayer games.
- Java and Bedrock do not automatically join each other’s LAN sessions simply because both are installed on Windows.
The Minecraft Launcher can manage both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition on a Windows PC, but selecting the wrong edition still prevents the LAN world from appearing. Check the edition shown in the launcher and make sure all players are using matching game versions. An older or mismatched version can cause multiplayer connection errors even when the computers are on the same network.

If an update is available, update every installation through the normal Minecraft Launcher or Microsoft-supported store process, then restart the launcher and the game. Do not troubleshoot firewall rules until you have ruled out an edition or version mismatch.
2. Make sure the computers are really on the same local network
Both computers must be connected to the same local network—not merely connected to the internet. For example, the host might be on the main home Wi-Fi while the guest is connected to:
- a guest Wi-Fi network;
- a different router or access point;
- a mobile hotspot with client isolation;
- a VPN or virtual network adapter; or
- a network whose wireless clients are prevented from communicating with one another.
Temporarily exit or disconnect any VPN on both computers and restart Minecraft. If possible, connect both PCs to the same ordinary home Wi-Fi network, or test with both connected by Ethernet. This is a diagnostic step, not proof that you need new networking equipment.
For a laptop without a built-in Ethernet port, a compatible USB Ethernet adapter can provide the same wired test. Check that the adapter supports your laptop’s USB port and Windows version before buying one. A wired test is useful because it separates unreliable Wi-Fi or wireless isolation from a Minecraft configuration problem.
If a wired test is practical, a Cat 6 Ethernet cable is sufficient for connecting a PC to a home router or network switch. It is a way to test the local connection, not a guaranteed Minecraft fix.
3. Change the trusted Windows network to Private
Windows applies stricter discovery and connection rules to a Public network. On a trusted home network, changing the connected network profile to Private allows Windows to treat other devices on that network as discoverable.
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select Network & internet.
- Choose Wi-Fi or Ethernet, depending on the connection.
- Open the properties of the connected network.
- Set Network profile type to Private.
Windows 10
- Open Settings > Network & Internet.
- Select Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- Open the connected network’s properties.
- Under the network profile, choose Private.
Only do this on a network you trust, such as your own home network. Do not set a café, hotel, school, airport, or other public network to Private just to make Minecraft appear.
After changing the profile, close Minecraft completely on both computers. Reopen it and create the LAN session again. A network-profile change may not affect an already-running Minecraft process until the game is restarted.
4. Allow Minecraft or Java through Microsoft Defender Firewall
A firewall can allow internet access while still blocking local connections. This is a common reason for a Java LAN world not appearing or for a direct connection timing out.

Do not begin by disabling Windows Firewall completely. Allowing the required application on the trusted Private profile is safer than leaving the firewall off or opening a permanent inbound port.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Firewall & network protection.
- Choose Allow an app through firewall.
- Select Change settings.
- Find the relevant Minecraft, Java, or Java Platform entry.
- Allow it on the Private network profile.
- Leave the Public profile unchecked unless you have a specific, trusted reason to use it.
- Select OK, then restart Minecraft.
If Windows displayed a firewall permission prompt the first time Minecraft or Java launched, allowing the program on a trusted Private network may resolve the problem. If a third-party antivirus or firewall is installed, inspect its application and network rules too. VPN software can also include its own firewall or traffic-blocking feature.
Why you should not open a random Minecraft port
Opening a port is not the first-line fix for a local LAN discovery issue. It creates additional exposure and can still fail if the computers are isolated by the router or using different networks. If you use a port rule for a narrowly controlled test, restrict it to the Private profile and remove or disable it afterward. Never leave Windows Firewall disabled as a permanent Minecraft troubleshooting step.

Java Edition: open the world to LAN
- Have the host launch Java Edition.
- Open the desired single-player world.
- Press Esc.
- Select Open to LAN.
- Choose the game mode and whether cheats are allowed.
- Select Start LAN World.
Minecraft should display a message in the game chat or messages area stating that the local game was hosted and showing the assigned port. That message confirms that the host selected Start LAN World; merely loading a single-player world does not make it joinable over LAN.
On the guest computer, open Multiplayer after the host has started the LAN world. Wait briefly for the LAN listing to populate. The host should keep the world open while the guest searches.
Bedrock Edition: enable LAN multiplayer
- Have the host launch Bedrock Edition.
- Create a world or select the world’s edit button.
- Open the Multiplayer tab.
- Turn on Multiplayer game.
- Turn on Visible to LAN Players.
- Start the world.
On the guest PC, open Play > Worlds and look for the world marked LAN. If the world does not appear, use the network button at the top of the Worlds tab to toggle the display of LAN games. The button controls whether LAN worlds are shown in the list, so check it before assuming the host’s world failed.
6. If Java does not show the LAN world, try Direct Connection
Java’s automatic LAN list relies on discovery. You can bypass that list and test the actual local connection directly.

- On the host, open the LAN world with Esc > Open to LAN > Start LAN World.
- Note the port shown in Minecraft’s message.
- On the host, find its local IPv4 address. In Windows, one practical method is to open Command Prompt and run:
ipconfig
Find the IPv4 address for the active Wi-Fi or Ethernet adapter. It commonly begins with a private address such as 192.168. or 10., but the exact address depends on the router.
- On the guest computer, open Multiplayer > Direct Connection.
- Enter the host address in this format:
local-ip:port
For example, use the host’s actual address and Minecraft’s actual port rather than the placeholders. Do not add spaces. This test distinguishes two different failures:
- Direct Connection works: the computers can reach the host, and the main problem is probably LAN discovery or the multiplayer list.
- Direct Connection times out or fails: check the Private network profile, firewall permission, VPN, guest-network isolation, and whether both devices are genuinely on the same LAN.
Direct Connection does not bypass a blocked firewall or an isolated wireless network. It only bypasses the automatic discovery list.
7. Turn on Windows network discovery when other devices are also invisible
Windows network discovery is not the same mechanism as Minecraft LAN discovery, so enabling it is not guaranteed to fix Minecraft. It is nevertheless a useful diagnostic if the PCs cannot see one another or other local devices.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Open Settings > Network & internet.
- Select Advanced network settings.
- Open Advanced sharing settings.
- Expand Private networks.
- Turn on Network discovery.
- Turn on File and printer sharing.
If Windows network discovery remains unreliable, Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance identifies these services as relevant:
- Function Discovery Provider Host
- Function Discovery Resource Publication
- SSDP Discovery
- UPnP Device Host
Open the Windows Services app, locate the services, and check that they are configured to start automatically when appropriate. Do not change unrelated services or install third-party “network optimizer” software for this test.
8. Use the symptom to choose the next fix
| What you see | Most useful next steps |
|---|---|
| Java world never appears | Confirm matching Java versions and the same LAN; set the network to Private; allow Java or Minecraft through the Private firewall; restart and re-host; then try Direct Connection with the host’s local IP and LAN port. |
| Bedrock world never appears | Confirm matching Bedrock versions; enable Multiplayer game and Visible to LAN Players; open Play > Worlds; toggle the LAN display button; verify the devices use the same local network. |
| Java shows a timeout | Prioritize the Windows network profile and firewall, then check VPNs, guest Wi-Fi, router isolation, and the host’s local IP address. |
| Neither PC can see the other device | Treat it as a Windows or home-network problem first: check Private status, network discovery, VPNs, guest-network isolation, and the Function Discovery services. |
| Only online friends or Realms fail | Check Microsoft-account sign-in, multiplayer permissions, child-account restrictions, current versions, and the relevant online service. This is a different problem from local LAN discovery. |
9. Check Microsoft-account permissions only when they fit the symptom
Microsoft-account sign-in and multiplayer permissions matter particularly for Bedrock multiplayer and child accounts. Make sure multiplayer is enabled for the account if the problem involves invitations, online friends, or Realms.

If ordinary Wi-Fi or Ethernet connectivity is unstable outside Minecraft, install available Windows updates and use Windows’ built-in network troubleshooting tools. For network drivers, use Windows Update or the supported driver source provided by the computer or network-adapter manufacturer.
Do not make third-party driver cleaners, registry tools, or PC “optimizers” the primary solution to a Minecraft LAN listing problem. The high-value checks are edition and version matching, same-LAN connectivity, the Private network profile, firewall permissions, and the correct host settings.
Windows 10 remains relevant to existing installations, but Microsoft’s support status is time-sensitive: free software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes for Windows 10 ended after October 14, 2025. The Minecraft steps can still apply on Windows 10, but supported Windows 11 should be preferred when upgrading is practical.
Recommended order in five minutes
- Confirm everyone is using the same edition: Java with Java or Bedrock with Bedrock.
- Confirm matching game versions.
- Put every computer on the same normal home Wi-Fi or Ethernet network.
- Disconnect VPNs and avoid guest Wi-Fi.
- Set the trusted Windows network to Private.
- Allow Minecraft or Java through the firewall on the Private profile.
- Restart Minecraft on every computer.
- Re-host correctly: Open to LAN for Java, or enable Multiplayer game and Visible to LAN Players for Bedrock.
- For Java, use the displayed LAN port with Direct Connection if the automatic list remains empty.
- If other devices are also invisible, troubleshoot Windows network discovery and the home router.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Minecraft Java and Bedrock players join the same LAN world?
Not through the normal Java or Bedrock LAN features. Java players need a Java LAN session, while Bedrock players need a Bedrock local multiplayer game. Installing both editions in the Windows Minecraft Launcher does not make their LAN sessions interchangeable.
Why does Minecraft LAN work on one Wi-Fi network but not another?
The networks may be different even if both provide internet access. Guest Wi-Fi, mobile hotspots, VPNs, separate access points, and router client-isolation settings can prevent devices from communicating locally. Test both computers on the same ordinary home network.
Should I disable Windows Firewall to make Minecraft LAN work?
No. Allow Minecraft, Java, or the Java Platform binary through the firewall on the trusted Private network profile instead. Disabling the firewall or opening a broad port creates unnecessary security exposure.
What does the Java LAN port do?
After the host selects Start LAN World, Minecraft displays a port for that session. The guest can use the host’s local IPv4 address and that port in Multiplayer > Direct Connection, using the format local-ip:port. The port changes when a new LAN session is created, so use the current one.
The Bottom Line
For most Windows Minecraft LAN problems, start with the basics: matching edition and version, the same non-guest local network, a trusted Private Windows profile, and a firewall exception for Minecraft or Java. Then re-host the world using the correct Java or Bedrock controls. If Java’s LAN list is still empty, Direct Connection with the host’s local IP and displayed port reveals whether the remaining issue is discovery or basic network access.
