The best starting point for most PS4 owners is a 2TB portable USB 3.0-or-later hard drive. A model such as the WD Elements Portable 2TB or Seagate Expansion Portable 2TB gives you substantially more room for games without approaching the PS4’s 8TB limit.
Buying a drive labeled “PS4-certified” is not necessary. For PS4 extended storage, the important requirements are a capacity between 250GB and 8TB, USB 3.0 or later, and a direct connection to the console—not through a USB hub. The PS4 will format the drive for its own use, so back up anything important before setup.
Quick recommendations
| Best for | Recommended type | Why choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Most PS4 owners | 2TB portable USB hard drive | A practical balance of price, capacity, portability, and compatibility. |
| Large digital libraries | 4TB or 5TB portable USB hard drive | More room for games and applications while remaining below Sony’s 8TB maximum. |
| Named product example | WD Elements Portable 2TB | USB 3.2 Gen 1/USB 3.0 connectivity, a USB-A cable, portable design, and a listed two-year worldwide warranty. |
| Comparable alternative | Seagate Expansion Portable 2TB | Portable 2TB model with USB 3.0 connectivity and an included USB 3.0 cable. |
These are compatibility-based recommendations, not claims that one brand universally loads games faster or lasts longer. The available product specifications establish capacity, interface, form factor, and included accessories; they do not provide a reliable basis for ranking long-term failure rates, noise, or game-loading performance.
What to look for in a PS4 external hard drive
1. Capacity between 250GB and 8TB
Sony’s extended-storage requirements allow drives from 250GB up to 8TB. A drive smaller than 250GB will not qualify, while a drive larger than 8TB exceeds the PS4’s supported range.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor most people, 2TB is the sensible default. Choose 4TB or 5TB if you keep a large digital library installed at the same time. Capacity does not make games run faster, however. It only determines how much storage is available.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
The usable space will be lower than the number printed on the box because manufacturers advertise decimal capacity and the PS4 requires formatting and system overhead. Game sizes also vary considerably and can grow through patches and downloadable add-ons, so no honest recommendation can promise an exact number of installed games.
2. USB 3.0 or later
The drive must use USB 3.0 or a later SuperSpeed USB standard. Sony’s supported SuperSpeed terminology includes USB 3.0, USB 3.1 Gen 1, USB 3.2 Gen 1, and faster USB standards. A newer USB rating is acceptable, but the PS4 cannot automatically turn a mechanical hard drive into an SSD or make games run proportionally faster.
For a conventional portable HDD, look for a clearly specified USB 3.x interface and an appropriate cable. Both the WD Elements Portable 2TB and Seagate Expansion Portable 2TB documentation lists the required USB connectivity and an included cable.

3. A direct connection to the console
Connect the drive directly to one of the PS4’s USB ports. Sony does not support using a USB hub for extended storage. If the drive is connected through a hub, move it to the console before troubleshooting capacity, speed, or recognition errors.
4. A portable, bus-powered design is usually easiest
A portable 2.5-inch HDD is a convenient choice for an entertainment center because it normally draws power through the PS4’s USB connection rather than requiring a separate power adapter. Confirm that the drive includes a compatible cable and place it somewhere with reasonable airflow.
A desktop external drive with its own power adapter may still be a capacity option if it meets the PS4’s requirements, but it is less tidy and less convenient to move. The portable form factor is a practical default—not a special performance requirement.
Best PS4 external hard drives
Best overall for most people: WD Elements Portable 2TB
The WD Elements Portable 2TB is a strong all-purpose example of the type of drive most PS4 owners should buy. Its listed specifications include a 2TB capacity, USB 3.2 Gen 1/USB 3.0 connectivity, USB 2.0 compatibility, a USB-A cable, and a two-year worldwide warranty.
Recommended Free Tools
Its main advantage is fit rather than a special PS4 feature: 2TB is large enough to make a noticeable difference, the portable enclosure is suitable for a console setup, and the interface meets the PS4’s basic requirement. Check the current product listing and warranty terms before buying because availability, retail packaging, and regional terms can change.
Choose it if: you want a straightforward 2TB expansion drive and do not need the largest capacity available.
Comparable alternative: Seagate Expansion Portable 2TB
The Seagate Expansion Portable 2TB is a comparable alternative. Seagate’s documentation lists a 2TB model with USB 3.0 connectivity and an included USB 3.0 cable. The listed enclosure dimensions for capacities of 2TB and below are approximately 4.54 by 3.15 by 0.50 inches.
The cited Seagate datasheet lists a one-year limited warranty in the Americas, but warranty coverage can vary by region and product revision. Confirm the current terms for your location rather than treating the warranty as universal.

Best for a large library: 4TB or 5TB portable HDD
A 4TB or 5TB portable hard drive is a sensible upgrade for someone with many downloaded games, frequent large installations, or several users sharing one console. WD’s current Elements Portable documentation lists 4TB and 5TB capacities, among others, and both remain below the PS4’s 8TB ceiling.
Do not buy a larger drive expecting better frame rates or dramatically faster loading. The reason to choose 4TB or 5TB is simply to avoid managing storage as often. The larger capacity may cost more and can be physically or electrically different depending on the exact model, so verify the current specifications before purchase.
What PS4 extended storage can—and cannot—store
Once formatted as extended storage, the drive is primarily an expansion area for games, applications, and add-ons. You can install applications directly to it and move existing applications between the PS4’s internal system storage and the external drive. Updates are downloaded to the location where the corresponding application is installed.
It is not a universal PS4 backup disk. Sony’s restrictions mean extended storage does not store:
- Application saved data
- Themes
- Screenshots
- Video clips
If you want to protect saves, screenshots, clips, or other personal data, use the PS4’s appropriate backup or transfer features separately. Do not assume that formatting a drive as extended storage creates a complete console backup.
How to format an external drive for PS4
- Back up or remove anything important from the drive.
- Connect the drive directly to a PS4 USB port. Do not use a hub.
- On the PS4 home screen, open Settings > Devices > USB Storage Devices.
- Select the external drive.
- Choose Format as Extended Storage and confirm.
After formatting, set it as the default destination for new applications if desired:
- Open Settings > Storage.
- Press the Options button.
- Choose Application Install Location > Extended Storage.
The PS4 allows only one extended-storage device to be active at a time, even if more than one external drive is connected. Adding several drives is not a way to combine their capacities into one larger PS4 volume.

You can move installed applications between internal system storage and the external drive:
- Open Settings > Storage.
- Select the storage location that currently contains the application—for example, System Storage or Extended Storage.
- Choose Applications.
- Press the Options button.
- Select Move to Extended Storage or Move to System Storage.
- Select the games or applications to move, then confirm.
If the same application appears in both storage locations, one copy must be deleted before the extended-storage device can be used normally. Be careful when selecting a copy to remove, especially if you are managing multiple installations or add-ons.
How to disconnect the drive safely
Do not unplug the drive while the PS4 is using it. Use one of these commands first:
- Quick Menu > Sound/Devices > Stop Using Extended Storage
- Settings > Devices > USB Storage Devices > Stop Using This Extended Storage
Only disconnect the cable after the PS4 confirms that it is safe. Incorrect removal can produce a repair message or storage errors. If a drive is disconnected, games installed on it may still appear in the PS4 interface, but they cannot start until the drive is connected again.
PS4 external-drive troubleshooting
“The drive is too small” or a capacity-related error
Check the advertised capacity. The drive may be below the 250GB minimum or above the 8TB maximum. Remember that the formatted usable capacity is lower than the advertised figure, but the drive still needs to fall within Sony’s supported range.
“The device does not meet the speed requirement”
Confirm that the drive is USB 3.0 or later. Then disconnect it safely, reconnect it firmly and directly to the PS4, and try again. A USB hub, damaged cable, loose connection, or an incorrectly specified older USB drive can cause this type of problem.

The PS4 does not recognize the drive
- Connect it directly to the console instead of through a hub.
- Check both ends of the cable and try the PS4’s other USB port.
- Make sure the drive has enough capacity and uses USB 3.0 or later.
- Allow the PS4 to detect the drive before attempting to format it.
- If the drive contains important files, do not format it until those files are backed up elsewhere.
Most portable drives draw power over USB, but a cable or drive fault can still prevent recognition. If the included cable is lost or damaged, a compatible USB 3.0-or-later replacement hard-drive cable may help; verify the connector and drive requirements rather than buying a generic cable blindly.
The console says the drive needs repair
Incorrect removal is one possible cause. Safely reconnect the drive and follow the repair instructions shown by the PS4. Avoid repeatedly unplugging and reconnecting it while the console is operating, since that can worsen storage errors or corrupt the extended-storage volume.

Try positioning the external drive farther away from the PS4 and its wireless area. Sony identifies Wi-Fi or Bluetooth interference as something that may improve when the external drive is moved farther from the console.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you use the drive with a computer afterward?
Not without reformatting it. Formatting for PS4 extended storage erases existing data and changes the drive’s use to console storage. To return it to ordinary computer-storage use, the drive must be reformatted, which erases the PS4 data on it. Move or copy anything you need before taking that step.
Should you buy an SSD instead?
This guide’s recommendations focus on portable HDDs because they offer a practical amount of extra capacity for the money and meet the PS4’s basic requirements. A faster USB drive does not automatically guarantee a proportional improvement in gameplay, and the supplied compatibility research does not establish universal loading-time results for particular models.
If you are considering an SSD, treat it as a separate performance-and-price decision rather than assuming that a higher USB number alone makes it the better PS4 purchase. The same fundamental requirements still apply: supported capacity, USB 3.0 or later, and a direct connection.
PS4 external hard-drive buying checklist
- Capacity is at least 250GB and no more than 8TB.
- The interface is USB 3.0 or later.
- The drive can connect directly to the PS4 without a hub.
- The included cable is compatible and long enough for your setup.
- You have backed up anything currently stored on the drive.
- You understand that PS4 formatting erases the drive.
- You need storage for games and applications, not a complete backup of saves and media.
- You have checked current price, stock, model details, and regional warranty terms.
Bottom line
For most PS4 owners, buy a 2TB portable USB 3.0-or-later hard drive and connect it directly to the console. The WD Elements Portable 2TB and Seagate Expansion Portable 2TB are sensible examples that match the core requirements. Choose 4TB or 5TB if capacity matters more than keeping the initial purchase smaller.
Format the drive through Settings > Devices > USB Storage Devices, set the application install location if needed, and always use the PS4’s stop command before unplugging it. Most importantly, remember that extended storage expands game and application space—it does not replace a proper backup for saved data, screenshots, or video clips.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best size external hard drive for a PS4?
A 2TB portable drive is the best default for most owners. It provides a meaningful storage increase without nearing the PS4’s 8TB maximum. Choose 4TB or 5TB if you maintain a large digital library.
Can any external hard drive work with a PS4?
It must meet Sony’s requirements: 250GB to 8TB capacity, USB 3.0 or later, and a direct connection to the PS4. The console must format it as extended storage before it can install or move games to it.
Does PS4 extended storage back up saved games?
No. PS4 extended storage is primarily for games, applications, and add-ons. It does not store application saved data, themes, screenshots, or video clips.
Can I unplug a PS4 external hard drive?
Yes, but stop using it first. Use Quick Menu > Sound/Devices > Stop Using Extended Storage, or Settings > Devices > USB Storage Devices > Stop Using This Extended Storage. Unplugging it while active can cause repair messages or storage errors.
Can I use a PS4 external hard drive on a PC?
Not as ordinary computer storage without reformatting. Reformatting returns it to computer use but erases the PS4 data, so copy anything important first.
The Bottom Line
Buy a 2TB portable USB 3.0-or-later HDD for the simplest PS4 upgrade. Use 4TB or 5TB if you need more room, connect the drive directly, format it through the PS4, and safely stop extended storage before disconnecting. It expands space for games and applications, but it is not a complete backup solution.
