If Oblivion Remastered is crashing on your PC, follow an escalating checklist rather than relying on one universal fix. Update the game, confirm the PC and SSD meet the requirements, reduce graphics load, update the GPU driver, repair the installation, remove mods and overlays, review antivirus interference, and then test a separate Windows profile. The exact crash trigger matters: launch crashes, autosave failures, crafting freezes, and crashes in particular quests can have different causes.
The fastest way to troubleshoot Oblivion Remastered crashing on PC is to work from the least destructive checks to the more invasive ones: install every game update, confirm the PC meets the game’s requirements, reduce graphics load, update the GPU driver, verify the installation, remove mods and overlays, check security software, and finally test a separate Windows profile. Do not begin by deleting saves, downloading replacement DLL files, or using registry cleaners.
There is no single fix that covers every crash. Bethesda’s troubleshooting guidance identifies several independent causes, including unsuitable hardware, installing the game on an HDD, graphics settings that exceed the system’s practical capacity, outdated or incorrectly selected GPU drivers, damaged files, mods, overlays, permissions, antivirus interference, missing DirectX components, and Windows-profile conflicts.
Before troubleshooting: note exactly when the crash occurs
Write down the trigger before changing anything. “It crashes” is less useful than a reproducible description such as:
#1 Best Overall
- immediately after launching;
- during a loading screen or when entering a particular area;
- when an autosave is created;
- after changing graphics settings;
- during a specific quest or combat encounter;
- while making potions or enchanting;
- after fast travel; or
- only with a particular save, mod, overlay, or Windows account.
The trigger determines which troubleshooting branch is most relevant. Also record your Windows version, CPU, GPU, RAM, storage drive, GPU-driver version, launcher, and whether the problem occurs in a new save without mods.
1. Install the latest game update and check the requirements
Let Steam or the Xbox app finish any pending Oblivion Remastered update before trying other fixes. Bethesda has released patches for multiple crash conditions, including GPU-related crashes, autosave crashes, crashes involving particular quests, and certain paralyze interactions. Bethesda’s public game archive lists Update 1.2, released on July 16, 2025, as the latest Oblivion Remastered update/news item found there. If a newer update is offered by your launcher, install that instead.
The Steam listing gives these minimum PC requirements:
| Component | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 version 21H1 or later, 64-bit | Updated Windows 10 or Windows 11, 64-bit |
| Processor | AMD Ryzen 5 2600X or Intel Core i7-6800K class | AMD Ryzen 5 3600X or Intel Core i5-10600K class |
| Memory | 16 GB RAM | 32 GB RAM |
| Graphics | AMD Radeon RX 5700 or NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti class | AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT or NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 class |
| Graphics API | DirectX 12 | DirectX 12 |
| Storage | 125 GB available on an SSD | 125 GB available on an SSD |
These are eligibility guidelines, not a guarantee of stable performance at every resolution, frame rate, or quality setting. Bethesda says that many performance problems are hardware-related and recommends an SSD, current drivers, lower quality settings, and fewer background applications.
If the game is installed on an HDD
An SSD is not merely an optional speed upgrade for this game: the listed requirements specify SSD storage. If Oblivion Remastered is on a mechanical hard drive, move it to a compatible SSD before diagnosing more complicated software problems. A compatible NVMe SSD for gaming PC or SATA SSD may improve loading behavior and bring the installation in line with the stated requirement, but it is not a guaranteed cure for every crash.
SSD buying checklist
- Check whether your motherboard or laptop has an available M.2 NVMe slot.
- If it does not, check for an available 2.5-inch SATA bay and SATA data and power connections.
- Choose enough capacity for the 125 GB game installation plus Windows updates and free working space; a drive that is nearly full can create separate problems.
- Confirm that the drive is compatible with your system before buying. NVMe and SATA drives are not interchangeable simply because both are called SSDs.
- After installing or moving the game, confirm in Steam or the Xbox app that the library location is the SSD rather than the old HDD.
2. Reduce the load before changing game files
These checks are reversible and should be done before reinstalling anything.
Close background applications
Exit browsers, chat clients, music players, recording and streaming tools, RGB utilities, hardware-monitoring tools, and other unnecessary programs. This is especially important if the crash is preceded by stuttering, severe frame-rate drops, high temperatures, or heavy memory use.
Lower the graphics settings
Open Oblivion Remastered’s Graphics or Display settings and lower the overall quality level. If the crashes began immediately after changing graphics options, return to the automatically detected settings rather than continuing to increase individual options.
Steam users can also try launching the game in Safe Mode if a graphics change has made normal startup unstable. Treat lower settings as a diagnostic test, not proof that one particular graphics option is defective.
Disable overlays
- Steam: disable the Steam Overlay for the game.
- Xbox app: disable Xbox Game Bar.
Also temporarily disable other overlays from recording software, GPU utilities, chat applications, or monitoring tools. If the game becomes stable, re-enable them one at a time to identify the conflict.
Choose the discrete GPU and a suitable power profile
On a laptop or a desktop with integrated and discrete graphics, explicitly select the high-performance GPU for the game. When testing on a laptop, keep it plugged in and use a high-performance power profile. A game running on integrated graphics or an aggressive battery-saving profile may perform very differently from the same game using the dedicated GPU.
3. Update the graphics driver and check DirectX
Install the current driver for your exact GPU from AMD, NVIDIA, or Intel’s official support site. Do not treat an old Bethesda support target as permanently current: Bethesda’s support guidance lists AMD Adrenalin Edition 25.4.1 and NVIDIA driver 576.40 as its stated minimum targets for best performance, but driver releases change. Use the newest driver offered by the GPU manufacturer that supports your model and Windows version.

After updating, restart Windows and test the game before adding overlays or other software back. If the problem started immediately after a driver update, use the manufacturer’s supported rollback option or install a known-compatible driver from the official site rather than using an indiscriminate driver-updater utility.
Check DirectX with DxDiag
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
dxdiagand press Enter. - Review the DirectX version and the information on the Display tabs.
- Save the report if you need to send your specifications to support.
A newer DirectX version in Windows does not necessarily include every legacy DirectX runtime component that an individual game may need. If Bethesda’s guidance or an error message indicates missing components, use Microsoft’s official DirectX End-User Runtime or Windows support instructions. Never download individual DLL files from unofficial websites.
4. Repair the game installation
Damaged or missing files can cause launch failures, loading crashes, and crashes that begin after an update or mod change. File verification normally does not remove personal saves, but back up important saves before making broader changes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRank #3
Steam: verify the integrity of the files
- Restart the PC.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Oblivion Remastered, or open its gear menu.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
Steam may report that one or more files failed verification even when the operation did what it should. Steam notes that local configuration files which are not intended to be replaced can produce that result. A failed-file count is therefore not automatically evidence that verification failed; allow Steam to reacquire any files it identifies, then launch the game again.
Xbox app: use the installed-game repair option
Open the Xbox app’s installed-games management screen for Oblivion Remastered and use its available Repair or Verify option. Labels can vary with the Xbox app and Windows version. If the option is unavailable or does not complete, use the launcher and Bethesda support instructions for the Microsoft Xbox app rather than deleting the installation folder manually.
5. Remove mods completely while testing
If mods are installed, disable and remove them before deciding that the unmodified game is crashing. A mod can leave changed files, configurations, scripts, or save dependencies behind even after it is toggled off.
- Back up saves and mod-manager profiles or load orders to a separate location.
- Disable and remove the installed mods, including graphics, script, UI, and performance mods.
- Repair or verify the game files again.
- Test an unmodified game and, if possible, a new save.
Bethesda specifically recommends removing mods, reinstalling the game when necessary, and repairing the files again when troubleshooting crashes. This is an isolation test, not proof that a particular mod is responsible. Only attribute the problem to a mod if the crash can be reproduced with that mod enabled and disappears when it is removed. Do not assume every save is safe with every mod combination.

6. Check administrator permissions and antivirus interference
Try administrator mode
Bethesda recommends running the game as an administrator as part of its crash guidance. Locate the game’s executable, open its Properties, choose the Compatibility tab, and test Run this program as an administrator. The default installation folders Bethesda lists are:
C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonOblivion Remasteredfor the default Steam location;C:XboxGamesThe Elder Scrolls IV- Oblivion Remasteredfor the default Xbox/Microsoft Store location.
Your library may be on another drive or folder. Do not assume those paths apply if you selected a custom installation location.
Review antivirus quarantine and exclusions
Security software can quarantine or interfere with a legitimate game file. First check the antivirus history or quarantine area. If a trusted Oblivion Remastered file was blocked, restore it through the security product and verify the game files again.

- Used Book in Good Condition
Only add an antivirus exclusion for a legitimate installation and only when security software is actually blocking or quarantining it. An exclusion reduces protection for that location, so do not broadly exclude the entire drive, Windows folders, or downloads folder. If you cannot determine whether a file is legitimate, leave it quarantined and contact Bethesda or the security-software vendor.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →7. Test for a Windows-profile or startup-program conflict
If the game still crashes after updating, lowering settings, verifying files, removing mods, and checking security software, test it under a new local Windows user profile. This does not guarantee a repair; it helps determine whether the problem is tied to the original profile’s settings, permissions, cached data, or a startup application.
- Create a temporary Windows user account with permission to run the game.
- Sign into that account and launch the unmodified game.
- Test the same activity, preferably with a new save first.
- If it works there, compare startup programs and profile-specific settings rather than immediately reinstalling Windows.
Bethesda suggests using Selective Startup to identify a conflicting program. Disable only non-essential startup services and applications for the test, record what you changed, and restore items methodically. Steam’s general launch-failure guidance likewise emphasizes updating Windows and drivers, verifying files, disabling non-essential software, and checking the system requirements.

Crashing during potion-making
Bethesda’s potion-making guidance recommends crafting more slowly, temporarily removing stolen ingredients, and testing with mods disabled. Try one change at a time so you can identify whether the trigger is the crafting speed, a particular ingredient, a mod, or a broader installation problem.
Freezing while enchanting
Fully exit and restart the game. On PC, completely disable and remove installed mods, then verify or repair the game files. If the freeze occurs only during enchanting and disappears in an unmodified test, keep the mods removed until their compatibility is confirmed.
Crashing around paralyzed NPCs
Update 1.2 addressed crashes involving paralyzing an already-paralyzed NPC and killing a paralyzed NPC with an arrow. If the game is fully updated and the same crash persists, test without mods and record the exact NPC, location, save, and action for Bethesda Support.
Crashing after fast travel, in a named area, or during combat
Bethesda says Update 1.1 fixed several activity-specific crashes, including crashes after fast travel to Vilverin, while exploring the Crustacean Cave, and during combat with Scamps. Confirm the game is updated before treating one of these events as a current, universal bug. If it remains reproducible after updating, test a new save without mods and report the exact sequence.

Should you reinstall Oblivion Remastered?
Reinstalling is a later step, not the first one. Do it only after verifying files, removing mods, checking the driver and DirectX, and testing overlays and security software. Before uninstalling:
- back up saves and mod-manager data;
- note the current installation drive and available space;
- confirm that the destination is an SSD;
- remove or document custom launch options and configuration changes; and
- make sure the launcher can download the game again.
A reinstall can replace damaged files, but it will not fix an unsupported GPU, an unstable overclock, an incompatible driver, a conflicting background program, or a Windows-profile problem. If the same crash returns immediately after a clean installation, continue with isolation rather than repeatedly reinstalling.
When to contact Bethesda Support
Escalate the issue after the official update, graphics reset, driver and DirectX checks, file repair, mod removal, security review, and clean Windows-profile test have failed. Include:
- Steam or Xbox app, and your region if relevant;
- CPU, GPU, RAM, storage type, and free space;
- Windows version and GPU-driver version;
- the exact crash location or activity;
- whether it happens at launch, loading, autosave, crafting, combat, or fast travel;
- whether it happens in a new save;
- whether it continues with all mods and overlays removed; and
- what file-repair, driver, DirectX, and Windows-profile tests changed.
That information helps support distinguish a game-specific defect from a hardware, driver, security, or Windows-profile conflict. It is not possible to responsibly conclude from the crash alone that you need a new GPU, a Windows reinstall, or replacement hardware.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will meeting Oblivion Remastered’s minimum requirements prevent crashes?
No. The minimum specifications are eligibility guidelines, not a guarantee of stable performance at every graphics setting, resolution, or frame rate. Bethesda recommends an SSD, current drivers, lower quality settings, and fewer background applications.
How do I repair Oblivion Remastered’s files?
Verify the installation first. In Steam, open Library, right-click Oblivion Remastered, select Properties, open Installed Files, and choose Verify integrity of game files. In the Xbox app, use the installed game’s Repair or Verify option if available.

Disable and remove all mods, back up saves and mod profiles, then verify the game files again. A mod should only be identified as the cause if the crash disappears when it is removed and returns when it is enabled.
Which graphics driver should I install for Oblivion Remastered?
Use the official AMD, NVIDIA, or Intel support site for the current driver for your exact GPU. Bethesda has listed driver targets in its support guidance, but driver versions change and should not be treated as permanently current.
What if Oblivion Remastered crashes during a specific quest or activity?
Record the exact trigger, confirm the game is updated, and test without mods. Update 1.2 addressed several paralyze, GPU, and autosave crashes; earlier updates addressed some crashes involving Vilverin, the Crustacean Cave, and Scamps. If the issue remains reproducible, send Bethesda your hardware, Windows and driver versions, save details, and troubleshooting results.
The Bottom Line
Start with the update, requirements, SSD check, graphics reset, background-app and overlay shutdown, then move through driver updates and file verification. Remove mods before blaming the base game, and reserve reinstalling or creating a new Windows profile for cases that survive the reversible checks. A persistent activity-specific crash should be reported to Bethesda with precise reproduction details rather than treated as proof that a particular component must be replaced.
