Install Game Assist from Microsoft Edge’s Settings page, then open it with Win+G in Xbox Game Bar. To remove it, use Windows 11 Settings > Apps and uninstall Game Assist. The procedure does not remove Microsoft Edge.
Microsoft Edge Game Assist is installed from Microsoft Edge and opened through Xbox Game Bar—not downloaded as a separate desktop program. On a supported Windows 11 PC, open Microsoft Edge, go to Settings and more (…) > Settings, search for Game Assist, and select the installation option. Afterward, press Win+G to open Xbox Game Bar and launch the Game Assist widget.
To uninstall it, open Windows Settings > Apps, find Game Assist, choose its menu or details view, and select Uninstall. Removing Game Assist does not remove Microsoft Edge.
What Microsoft Edge Game Assist does
Game Assist is a gaming-optimized Microsoft Edge experience that runs inside Xbox Game Bar. It lets you browse web pages and use game-related services without switching to the desktop with Alt+Tab. Depending on availability, you can use it for:

- Other browser-based content while a game remains in focus
The widget can be moved, resized, minimized, or pinned above the game. Microsoft also says it shuts down automatically after a short period of inactivity and does not consume system resources when Game Bar is not being used. Those are Microsoft’s product descriptions, not independent performance measurements.
Requirements before installing Game Assist
Game Assist is built on Microsoft Edge and does not work with another browser. You do not have to make Edge your default Windows browser, however; you can continue using Chrome, Firefox, or another browser for normal desktop browsing.
Microsoft’s current support information identifies these important requirements:
- Windows 11: Game Assist is a Windows 11 feature.
- Microsoft Edge 137 or later: The current general-availability documentation lists Edge 137+ for the included experience.
- Current Windows updates: Install the latest updates available for your Windows 11 release.
- Current Xbox Game Bar: Game Assist is displayed inside Xbox Game Bar, so Game Bar must be available and updated.
Microsoft’s documentation describes the feature for Windows 11 Home, Education, and Pro, and also states that the Edge Settings installation route can be used on Windows 11 editions where Edge is available. Exact update controls and page labels can vary between Windows 11 builds.

How to install Microsoft Edge Game Assist
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Select Settings and more (…) in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Settings.
- Use the Settings search box and search for Game Assist.
- Select the option to install Game Assist when it appears.
- Press Win+G to open Xbox Game Bar.
- Find and open the Game Assist widget in the Game Bar interface.
The installation option may appear as an install command or similarly worded control depending on the Edge version and Windows build. The important route is Edge Settings > search for Game Assist, rather than downloading an unrelated installer from the web.
Open the widget after installation
With a game or another supported application in focus, press Win+G. Xbox Game Bar opens as an overlay. Select the Game Assist widget to load the browser experience, then position it where it is least obstructive.
You can resize or move the widget, minimize it, or pin it so that it remains visible over the game. This is useful for checking a guide, reading chat, changing a playlist, or consulting a web page without leaving the game window.

How to uninstall Game Assist in Windows 11
- Open Windows Settings. You can usually do this from the Start menu or by pressing Win+I.
- Open Apps.
- Open the installed-apps or apps-management page shown by your Windows 11 build.
- Find Game Assist in the list.
- Open the app’s menu or details view.
- Select Uninstall.
- Confirm the removal if Windows displays a confirmation prompt.
Windows 11 releases do not always use identical intermediate labels. For example, the installed-apps page may be presented with slightly different wording or navigation. Look for the stable sequence: Settings, Apps, Game Assist, Uninstall.

- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Go to Settings and more (…) > Settings.
- Search the Settings page for Game Assist.
- Select the installation option.
- Press Win+G and open the widget from Xbox Game Bar.
Microsoft says Game Assist can be reinstalled through this Edge Settings path at any time. You do not need to uninstall or reinstall Microsoft Edge itself.
What to do if Game Assist is missing
The Game Assist option does not appear in Edge Settings
- Confirm that the PC is running Windows 11, not Windows 10.
- Check the installed Edge version and update it to at least Microsoft Edge 137, if an update is available.
- Install available Windows 11 updates.
- Update Xbox Game Bar through the update mechanism available on the PC.
- Restart Edge after updating, then search for Game Assist again.
Early preview instructions sometimes required an Edge preview channel and a browser restart. Those were historical preview requirements; Microsoft’s current support route is the Edge Settings page on supported Windows 11 systems.

Game Assist depends on Xbox Game Bar. First confirm that Game Bar is installed, enabled, and updated in Windows. Then install pending Windows updates and try Win+G again. If the shortcut still does nothing, the problem is with Game Bar or Windows input handling rather than with the Game Assist widget alone.
Also check that the keyboard is sending the Windows key correctly. If the Windows key has been disabled by a keyboard gaming mode or hardware switch, the shortcut may not work even though Game Bar is installed.
Game Assist installs but game suggestions are absent
The general browser widget and enhanced game-specific content are not the same thing. Microsoft says enhanced content can vary according to the game, language, and geography. The widget can therefore be installed and working normally even when a particular game has no enhanced guide or recommendation.

Game Assist will not work in my preferred browser
That is expected. Game Assist is based on Microsoft Edge and is not compatible with other browsers. Edge does not need to be your default browser, but it does need to be installed and current because it supplies the Game Assist experience.
Do you need to buy a gaming keyboard?
No. A new accessory is not required to install, use, or uninstall Game Assist. If your existing keyboard has a working Windows key, you can use Win+G to open Xbox Game Bar, and Game Bar also supports mouse-and-keyboard interaction.
If you need a physical input device, a PC gaming keyboard can be a convenient optional upgrade for the Game Bar workflow. It will not install Game Assist, improve the widget automatically, or replace the Windows and Edge requirements. Choose one only if you also need a keyboard for general PC gaming or desktop use.

Removing Game Assist and removing Microsoft Edge are different operations. The Windows Settings entry for Game Assist is the one you want for this task.
Microsoft describes Edge as an essential Windows component and warns that removing Edge can affect Edge-backed applications, progressive web apps, and widgets. If your goal is simply to stop the Game Bar browser widget from appearing, uninstall Game Assist rather than attempting to remove Edge.

Do I have to use Edge as my default browser?
No. You can keep another browser as your default desktop browser, but Microsoft Edge must be installed and supported because Game Assist is built on Edge.
Does uninstalling Game Assist remove Microsoft Edge?
No. Uninstalling Game Assist removes the widget only. Microsoft Edge remains installed, and Microsoft warns that removing Edge can affect other Edge-backed apps and widgets.
