How to Share Xbox Game Pass PC With Family: What Actually Works

Adding relatives to a Microsoft Family group does not ordinarily share PC Game Pass with their separate accounts. Learn what works on one PC, why console Home sharing is different, what happened to Friends & Family, and what two PC players need.

You generally cannot share a standard PC Game Pass subscription with separate family members’ Microsoft accounts. The subscription belongs to the Microsoft account that bought it, and adding relatives to a Microsoft Family group does not automatically give them PC Game Pass. If two people need separate profiles on separate Windows PCs, the second player generally needs their own eligible subscription or game license unless an officially supported family plan is currently available in their region.

Usually, you cannot share a standard PC Game Pass subscription with separate family members’ Microsoft accounts on Windows PCs. The subscription belongs to the Microsoft account that purchased it. Adding relatives to a Microsoft Family group does not, according to Microsoft’s documented family-group guidance, automatically give those accounts their own PC Game Pass entitlement.

For one person using their own PC, the supported setup is straightforward: sign in to the Xbox app for PC with the Microsoft account that owns PC Game Pass, then install eligible games. If two family members need separate Xbox profiles on separate Windows PCs—particularly if they want to play at the same time—the second person generally needs their own eligible subscription or ownership of the game, unless an official family-capable plan is currently offered in their country.

What Microsoft Family can—and cannot—do

Microsoft Family is primarily an account-management and family-safety feature. An organizer can invite members, assign roles, and manage settings such as screen-time limits and content restrictions. It is not documented as a mechanism for transferring the organizer’s PC Game Pass subscription to every member of the family group.

Feature What it does Does it share PC Game Pass?
Microsoft Family group Organizes accounts and provides family-safety controls No automatic entitlement is documented
PC Game Pass Associates a subscription with the subscribing Microsoft account Available to the account holding the subscription
Xbox console home sharing Uses a separate console-license model Should not be treated as proof that separate Windows PCs can share the same subscription

How to use the subscription on the owner’s PC

These steps let the subscriber use PC Game Pass on a compatible Windows computer. They do not create an independent PC Game Pass license for another family member.

  1. Confirm the subscription account. Identify the Microsoft account that purchased PC Game Pass and make sure the subscription is active in that account’s services or subscriptions area.
  2. Check Windows compatibility. Microsoft’s PC Game Pass requirements specify Windows 10 or Windows 11 version 22H2 or later.
  3. Install or open the Xbox app for PC. Update the app if it is already installed.
  4. Sign in to the Xbox app. Use the Microsoft account that owns the subscription. If the app is signed into a different Xbox account, the catalog may not appear even if another account is signed into Windows.
  5. Choose a PC-compatible game. Check the game’s individual system requirements, supported platform, region, and any additional launcher or account requirement before installing.
  6. Install and play. Game Pass availability is not permanent: titles can leave the catalog, and availability can vary by plan, platform, region, and time.

Can the owner sign in on more than one PC?

Microsoft’s digital-goods rules allow PC Game Pass users to access the service on a reasonable number of compatible Windows devices, but specify that each game can be played on only one device at a time. This is an account-and-device licensing rule, not a family-sharing benefit.

That distinction matters. Signing the same subscriber account into another PC may allow access under Microsoft’s device rules, but it does not give the other person a separate Xbox identity or a durable, independently managed subscription. Saved games, achievements, purchases, privacy settings, parental controls, and account recovery remain tied to the account being used.

For that reason, routinely sharing the subscriber’s Microsoft password is a poor household solution. It exposes personal information and purchases, makes it difficult to keep profiles separate, and can create account-security problems. Use each person’s own Microsoft account wherever possible.

What if two family members want to play on separate PCs?

Use this decision guide:

  1. Check the current plan catalog for your country. Look at the official Xbox Game Pass plans and current subscription terms rather than relying on old articles or screenshots. Plan names, prices, benefits, and regional availability can change.
  2. Look specifically for a current family-capable offer. Do not assume that Microsoft Family membership is such an offer.
  3. If no official family plan is available, give the second player a separate entitlement. That may mean their own eligible Game Pass subscription or purchasing the relevant game outright.
  4. Keep the Xbox profiles separate. Each player should use their own Microsoft account for achievements, saves, multiplayer identity, purchases, and safety settings.

If both people want to play the same game simultaneously, do not rely on the ordinary PC Game Pass account/device rule. Microsoft’s documented rule limits each game to one device at a time under the ordinary PC subscription, and it does not establish a general right for separate family accounts to use one PC subscription concurrently.

What happened to Xbox Friends & Family?

Xbox did previously announce a Friends & Family plan in selected countries. The preview was described as one membership supporting up to four additional people, with individual accounts and access across console, PC, and cloud in supported markets. The announcement also said members could play at the same time, including the same game at the same time.

That historical offer should not be presented as a generally available U.S. solution. The current official regional Friends & Family page reviewed for this article says that the preview had ended in that region. Availability may differ by country and may change, so check a current official Xbox product page before treating any family plan as purchasable.

Why common “sharing” fixes do not solve the problem

Adding relatives to Microsoft Family

This manages family accounts and safety settings; it does not, by itself, document a transfer of the organizer’s PC Game Pass license.

Using the Microsoft Store account of the subscriber

Changing Store or Xbox app sign-ins can affect which purchases or entitlements Windows detects, but it does not turn another person’s Microsoft account into a PC Game Pass subscriber. It can also create confusing account combinations and purchase-ownership problems.

Copying the subscriber’s login to every PC

This is an account-sharing workaround, not a family entitlement. It mixes identities and exposes the subscriber’s personal data. It also does not remove Microsoft’s device and simultaneous-use restrictions.

Using Xbox console Home sharing as a comparison

Console sharing and PC licensing are separate models. Rules that apply to an Xbox console’s designated home setup should not be generalized to separate Windows PCs.

Troubleshooting: the subscriber cannot see or launch PC Game Pass games

If the subscription owner cannot use PC Game Pass on their own computer, work through these checks in order:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Update the Xbox app for PC. Close and reopen it after updating.
  2. Verify the Xbox app account. It must be signed in with the Microsoft account that owns the subscription.
  3. Check Windows. Confirm that the PC meets the required Windows 10 or Windows 11 version 22H2-or-later requirement.
  4. Confirm subscription status. Review the owning account’s Microsoft services or subscriptions page.
  5. Check catalog and regional availability. The game may have left Game Pass, may not be included in the selected plan, or may not be available for PC in that region.
  6. Check for a separate launcher or account. Some PC games require another launcher or publisher account in addition to the Xbox app.
  7. Check the game’s system requirements. A valid subscription does not guarantee that the computer has the required processor, graphics hardware, memory, storage, or operating-system support.

Only after these normal account, subscription, Windows, and Xbox-app checks should you investigate broader Windows app problems. A PC troubleshooting utility cannot grant Game Pass access, bypass licensing, or create a family entitlement; licensing and account mismatches must be fixed through the relevant Microsoft accounts and subscription settings.

How much does PC Game Pass cost?

Pricing is volatile and depends on country, currency, promotions, taxes, and Microsoft’s current plan lineup. The U.S. listing reviewed for this article displayed PC Game Pass at $13.99 per month, but readers should verify the current price and plan benefits immediately before subscribing. A price shown in an older article should not be treated as current.

Bottom line

Joining a Microsoft Family group does not ordinarily share one person’s PC Game Pass subscription with separate family accounts. The owner can use the subscription through the Xbox app for PC on compatible Windows devices, subject to Microsoft’s account, catalog, and one-device-per-game rules. For separate profiles playing on separate PCs—especially simultaneously—use a current official family-capable plan if one is actually available in your region; otherwise, the second player needs their own subscription or game license.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does adding someone to my Microsoft Family group give them PC Game Pass?

No. Microsoft Family is an account-management and safety feature. Microsoft does not document joining a family group as a way to grant every member the organizer’s PC Game Pass entitlement.

Can I use my PC Game Pass account on another computer?

The subscription owner should sign into the Xbox app for PC with the Microsoft account that owns PC Game Pass. Microsoft’s ordinary PC rules allow access on a reasonable number of compatible Windows devices, but each game can be played on only one device at a time. This is not the same as giving another account its own subscription.

Can two family members play PC Game Pass games at the same time on separate PCs?

Not under the ordinary PC Game Pass arrangement. If two people need separate Xbox profiles on separate Windows PCs, especially at the same time, the second player generally needs their own eligible subscription or the game itself, unless a current official family-capable plan is available in that country.

Is Xbox Game Pass Friends & Family still available?

Friends & Family was a historical, region-limited preview. The current official regional page reviewed says that the preview ended there, so it should not be treated as a generally available U.S. plan without checking Xbox’s current product catalog.

The Bottom Line

Microsoft Family membership is not the same as PC Game Pass family sharing. A standard PC Game Pass subscription remains tied to the purchasing Microsoft account. Separate family members who need their own profiles on separate Windows PCs generally need separate game entitlements unless a current, officially supported family plan is available in their region.
