The cause is usually a connection problem, a saved lighting profile, software conflict, firmware issue, or—only after cross-computer testing—a hardware fault.
Start with this quick checklist
- Disconnect the keyboard and reconnect it directly to the computer.
- Try another USB port. On a desktop PC, use a rear motherboard port.
- Remove USB hubs, KVM switches, monitor passthroughs, and passive extensions.
- If the keyboard has two USB plugs, connect both directly to the computer.
- Restart Windows.
- Close Razer Synapse and test the keyboard before opening it again.
- Check the model-specific brightness or lighting toggle in the keyboard manual.
- On Windows 11 23H2 or newer, temporarily disable Dynamic Lighting.
Razer recommends direct USB connection, trying another port, and connecting both plugs on dual-USB keyboards. See Razer’s keyboard troubleshooting guidance and keyboard FAQ.
Identify what has failed
| Symptom | Most useful first checks |
|---|---|
| Keys work, but all lighting is off | Brightness/effect control, Synapse, Windows Dynamic Lighting, firmware, and onboard profiles |
| Synapse cannot detect the keyboard, but it types | Direct USB connection, drivers, software conflicts, Synapse repair or reinstall, and firmware |
| The keyboard does not type and has no lighting | Power, cable, USB port, wireless receiver, battery, reset, and hardware |
| Lighting flickers or changes color unexpectedly | Unstable connection, Synapse profiles, Dynamic Lighting, third-party RGB software, and firmware |
| Lighting works before Windows loads but disappears in Windows | This strongly suggests a profile, Windows, or software-control problem rather than immediate LED failure |
| Only game effects fail | Separate ordinary keyboard lighting from Chroma game integration; the LEDs may still work normally |
1. Check power, cables, ports, and wireless connections
Unplug the keyboard, wait several seconds, and reconnect it. Use a known-good USB port directly on the computer. Desktop users should prefer a rear motherboard port while testing.
Do not diagnose the keyboard through a hub, KVM switch, monitor USB passthrough, or extension cable. These can introduce power or detection problems. For a dual-USB keyboard, connect both plugs directly; the second connection may be required for normal operation, and its exact purpose varies by model.

For a wireless Razer keyboard:
- Charge the battery or replace it if the model uses replaceable batteries.
- Turn the keyboard off and on.
- Connect the wireless receiver directly to the computer.
- Test wired mode if the keyboard supports it.
- Remove competing paired connections during a reset or pairing test.
- Check receiver pairing, wireless firmware, range, and possible interference.
Do not assume every wireless model supports lighting in every connection mode. Also avoid universal Fn-key instructions: Razer lighting controls differ between BlackWidow, Huntsman, Ornata, and other models. Use the exact manual for your keyboard.
2. Test the keyboard with Synapse closed
This is one of the fastest ways to distinguish a lighting-control problem from a dead keyboard.
- Back up or export your Razer profiles if possible.
- Right-click the Razer Synapse icon in the Windows system tray.
- In Synapse 4, choose Exit All Apps.
- Restart the computer.
- Test the keyboard before launching Synapse.
If the lighting returns while Synapse is closed, the keyboard LEDs are probably not completely failed. Investigate a corrupted profile, Synapse installation, Windows Dynamic Lighting, or another RGB utility. Razer also recommends testing without Synapse and testing the device on another computer.
Do not treat Synapse 3 as the normal current solution. Razer states that Synapse 3 updates and cloud services ended on February 3, 2026. Synapse 2 cloud-related features ended on October 28, 2025. Compatible devices should use Synapse 4 or the model-specific software listed on Razer’s support page; older hardware may still require legacy software.

3. Disable Windows Dynamic Lighting
Windows 11 Dynamic Lighting can compete with Razer Chroma control, particularly on Windows 11 version 23H2 and newer.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Personalization > Dynamic Lighting.
- Temporarily disable Dynamic Lighting or remove the keyboard from Windows lighting control.
- Relaunch Synapse and test the lighting.
Microsoft can change the exact wording or placement of this menu. If you do not see it, search Windows Settings for Dynamic Lighting. Razer specifically recommends disabling this feature when troubleshooting Chroma synchronization.

4. Update Windows, drivers, Synapse, and firmware
Lighting and detection involve several software layers, so update the relevant ones rather than assuming Synapse alone is responsible.
- Install normal Windows updates.
- Check Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates, especially if the problem began after a Windows update.
- Update the keyboard device driver through Windows or Device Manager.
- Update motherboard or chipset USB drivers if detection is intermittent.
- Update Synapse. Razer says updates normally install automatically, but a manual update check can help if the application is stuck or the expected device is missing.
- Update wireless receiver firmware or its required utility when applicable.
- Install the firmware updater for the exact keyboard model and revision.
Never use a generic Razer firmware package. Razer’s support pages list model-specific firmware updaters, versions, and release dates. Firmware may fix a device-level issue, but it is not guaranteed to restore lighting. Do not disconnect the keyboard while firmware is being installed.

5. Perform a model-supported hard reset
Razer documents the following reset for selected Huntsman and BlackWidow models. It is not a universal shortcut for every Razer keyboard. Verify your exact model on Razer’s hard-reset page first.
Back up profiles first. A supported hard reset clears onboard profiles and lighting configurations. You may need to restore key bindings and effects afterward.
- Close Synapse and other peripheral-control software.
- Disconnect the keyboard’s USB cable.
- If it is wireless, turn it off and disconnect it from paired devices.
- Hold Left Ctrl + Esc simultaneously.
- While holding both keys, reconnect the USB cable.
- Continue holding the keys for approximately five seconds.
- Release the keys.
- Wait for the keyboard to restart. The lighting may turn off and back on.
- When the default lighting effect returns, reopen Synapse and restore your profiles.
Razer’s currently listed applicable models include selected Huntsman and BlackWidow keyboards, including the BlackWidow V4 Pro 75%, BlackWidow V4 Tenkeyless HyperSpeed, BlackWidow V4 Mini HyperSpeed, BlackWidow V4 Low-Profile HyperSpeed, and BlackWidow V4 Low-Profile Tenkeyless HyperSpeed. The list can change, so confirm before resetting.

6. Test the keyboard on another computer
Connect the keyboard to a second computer without installing Synapse. This is the most informative separation between a PC-side problem and a keyboard-side problem.
- Works on another computer: The original Windows installation, USB subsystem, Synapse installation, profile, or RGB conflict is more likely responsible.
- Fails on another computer too: Suspect the keyboard, detachable cable, wireless receiver, firmware, onboard controller, or LEDs.
- Works wired but not wirelessly: Focus on the battery, receiver, pairing, wireless firmware, interference, and power-saving behavior.
- Works only in one USB port: Suspect the original port, hub, motherboard USB behavior, or an unstable connection.
7. Clean-reinstall Synapse only if the hardware works elsewhere
A reinstall is worthwhile when the keyboard works with Synapse closed or on another computer, but it should not be the first step. Back up profiles before removing the software.
Synapse 4 on Windows
- Back up or export profiles.
- Close Synapse from the system tray with Exit All Apps.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Razer.
- Uninstall Razer Synapse.
- In the Razer Gaming Software window, select Uninstall All.
- Disconnect non-essential Razer devices.
- If system corruption is suspected, run Windows System File Checker.
- Install Windows updates and restart the PC.
- Download and install the latest compatible Synapse 4 release from Razer.
- Import profiles if they were not associated with a Razer ID.
Follow Razer’s current Synapse 4 clean-reinstallation instructions.
Legacy Synapse 2 devices
Some older keyboards may require Synapse 2 or another legacy software path. Razer’s cleanup instructions may include removing remaining folders under:

Do not delete Razer folders casually. Close related processes and follow Razer’s version- and model-specific procedure. Removing the wrong files can affect other Razer software or saved configurations.
When the problem is probably hardware
Hardware becomes the leading explanation when the keyboard fails on multiple computers, with Synapse closed, after a compatible reset and model-specific firmware check.

Other warning signs include:
- A detachable cable works only when held at a particular angle.
- The wireless receiver is not detected or pairing fails on multiple computers.
- One key or lighting zone remains dark across multiple profiles and computers.
- There is evidence of liquid damage, corrosion, impact, or a partially failed lighting circuit.
- The keyboard neither types nor lights up despite a known-good direct connection.
If only one key or zone is dark, first check per-key and zone settings, profiles, and effects. If the same area remains dark everywhere, software troubleshooting is unlikely to repair a failed LED or lighting circuit.
Contact support before buying another keyboard
Before replacing the keyboard, check Razer support and warranty eligibility. Razer’s support information generally lists keyboards and keypads as covered for two years, but coverage depends on the product, purchase date, region, discontinued or refurbished status, and applicable local law. Liquid damage and other exclusions may apply.
Use Razer Store support for warranty, technical-support, drivers, firmware, returns, and replacement-parts routes. Replacement cables and receivers must be verified for the exact model, connector, data capability, and pairing requirements; a generic part may not work.
Consider a replacement only after the keyboard fails the second-computer test, the model-supported reset and firmware checks are complete, and warranty support is unavailable or uneconomical. If you do replace it, match the layout, wired or wireless connection, per-key versus zone RGB, onboard profile storage, detachable cable, and required Synapse generation to your needs.

Why does my Razer keyboard type but not light up?
The keyboard may have a disabled brightness or effect setting, a corrupted profile, a Synapse conflict, Windows Dynamic Lighting interference, outdated firmware, or a lighting-circuit fault. Test it with Synapse closed and on another computer before assuming the LEDs are defective.
Why does the lighting turn off when Synapse opens?
A saved profile, corrupted Synapse installation, Windows Dynamic Lighting conflict, third-party RGB utility, unsupported Synapse generation, or device firmware issue may be overriding the default lighting.

Can Windows Dynamic Lighting disable Razer Chroma?
It can compete with Chroma control on Windows 11 23H2 and newer. Temporarily disable it under Settings > Personalization > Dynamic Lighting, then test Synapse again.
Will a hard reset delete my profiles?
Yes. On supported models, the hard reset clears onboard profiles and lighting configurations. Back them up first.
Does every Razer keyboard use Left Ctrl + Esc for a reset?
No. Razer documents that procedure for selected Huntsman and BlackWidow models. Verify the exact model on Razer’s reset page before using it.
Should I update the firmware?
Check for an update using the exact model and revision. Firmware can resolve device-level problems, but it is not guaranteed to fix lighting, and interrupting the update can cause a more serious failure.
Recommended Free Tools
Why is Synapse not detecting my keyboard?
Start with a direct USB connection, another port, both USB plugs if applicable, and a second-computer test. If the keyboard works elsewhere, repair or clean-reinstall the compatible Synapse version.
Should I replace the keyboard?
Only after it fails on multiple computers after connection checks, a supported reset, and firmware verification. Check warranty support first; a replacement will not solve a PC-side USB or software problem.
The Bottom Line
Do not reinstall Synapse or buy a replacement first. Check direct power and USB, test with Synapse closed, disable Windows Dynamic Lighting when applicable, update the exact model’s software and firmware, then use the supported reset and a second-computer test. Persistent failure everywhere points toward the cable, receiver, controller, LEDs, or other hardware—so check warranty and Razer support before spending money.
