SteamOS does not have an official native Minecraft: Bedrock Edition client. You can try the unofficial Minecraft Bedrock Launcher on SteamOS if you own Minecraft through Google Play, but its supported game versions, Xbox login, friend invites, and multiplayer features are not guaranteed. For dependable, current Bedrock functionality, install Windows on the Steam Deck or stream Minecraft from another device.
What works on Steam Deck?
The Steam Deck runs SteamOS, which is Linux-based. Mojang and Microsoft officially support Minecraft: Java Edition on Linux; Bedrock is officially offered for Windows PC and supported consoles and mobile platforms. The official Minecraft Launcher supports Linux, but that Linux support does not provide the Windows Bedrock client.
That leaves four practical choices:
| Goal | Best route | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|
| Play Minecraft on SteamOS | Java Edition through Prism Launcher | Java and Bedrock players generally cannot join one another’s standard worlds directly. |
| Experiment with Bedrock while keeping SteamOS | Unofficial Minecraft Bedrock Launcher | Requires Google Play ownership and may have version and multiplayer limitations. |
| Use the official current Bedrock PC client | Windows on Steam Deck | Requires Windows, storage, drivers, and controller configuration. |
| Use an existing PC or console | Remote play through Steam Link, Moonlight, or a similar tool | The Deck streams the game; it does not run Bedrock locally. |
Bedrock supports cross-platform play among supported Bedrock devices, but installing Java through Prism Launcher does not solve a Bedrock cross-play requirement. The official PC edition listing explains the Java-and-Bedrock PC bundle, while the platform comparison documentation distinguishes the supported editions and platforms.
Method 1: Install the unofficial Bedrock Launcher through Discover
Important: This is a community project, not an official Mojang or Microsoft Linux port. Its repository describes it as unstable, and Flathub identifies the package as community-provided and unverified. It runs the Android Bedrock codebase on Linux.

Before you begin
- A Steam Deck running SteamOS and connected to the internet.
- Desktop Mode access.
- A Google account that owns Minecraft on Google Play. The relevant listing is Minecraft on Google Play.
- A Microsoft account if you need Xbox-related services or cross-platform features.
- Free storage for the launcher, game data, worlds, and updates.
- A backup of important worlds.
A Microsoft or Xbox PC purchase is not automatically the same as a Google Play entitlement. The official PC bundle includes Java and Bedrock for PC, but it does not state that it grants the Android purchase required by this unofficial launcher. Do not buy the game twice until you know which method you will use.
The project lists x86_64 Linux support, which matches the Steam Deck’s AMD64 architecture. However, Bedrock updates can quickly make unofficial launchers incompatible, so check the project’s current supported-version notes immediately before installing.
Install it in Desktop Mode
- Hold the Steam Deck’s power button.
- Select Switch to Desktop.
- Open Discover, SteamOS’s software center.
- Search for Minecraft Bedrock Launcher.
- Confirm that the package is associated with
io.mrarm.mcpelauncher. - Install it.
- Launch it from Discover or the application menu.
- Sign in using the account flow shown by the launcher.
- Allow it to download a game version that it supports.
- Select the installed version and choose Play.
- Create and test a new local world before importing or relying on an important save.
The project points users toward its current wiki and Flatpak package route. Its repository marks AppImage as deprecated, so avoid older guides that tell you to download a random AppImage or shell script.
Optional Flatpak installation
If Discover does not display the package, the project currently lists this Flatpak command:

Verify the package identifier on the project repository before running a command. Do not install APKs from random websites, use cracked launchers, or bypass license checks.
Add the launcher to Game Mode
- Remain in Desktop Mode and open Steam.
- Choose Games → Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library.
- Select the Bedrock Launcher application or executable entry.
- Choose Add Selected Programs.
- Return to Gaming Mode.
- Open the Non-Steam library category.
- Launch the added entry and configure the controller layout if necessary.
Flatpak applications can have launch-path, permission, or desktop-entry problems when started through Steam. If it fails in Game Mode, first confirm that it launches from Discover in Desktop Mode. Then re-add the correct application entry and launch it once outside Steam after an update. Keep the Desktop Mode shortcut as a fallback. Do not add arbitrary Steam launch options unless the project’s current documentation specifically recommends them.

What works—and what may not
Do not treat a successful installation as proof that every Bedrock feature works. The project’s current notes identify several limitations:
| Feature | Expectation |
|---|---|
| Local single-player | Best first test and generally the least demanding use case. |
| Controller input | May work, but Game Mode can require a custom controller layout. |
| Microsoft login | May fail, including errors such as “Drowned.” |
| Xbox friend invites | Known problem area; invites may time out or crash. |
| Joining Xbox-hosted worlds | Not dependable. |
| Realms and Marketplace | Test before relying on them; unofficial-client compatibility is not guaranteed. |
| Achievements | Do not assume official Windows or console behavior. |
| Latest updates | The newest Bedrock release may not run until the project catches up. |
| Direct servers | May work better than friend invites in some setups, but is not guaranteed. |
The project suggests that, in some multiplayer situations, users can connect by IP to an official Bedrock server. That is a server-side alternative—not a fix for Xbox Live login or friend-invite integration. See the official Bedrock server software page for server information.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTest multiplayer before paying for Realms or making this setup the main solution for family play. If your friends play on Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, Windows, Android, or iOS and you need normal account integration, Windows is the safer choice.
Fix common problems
“License error”
This usually points to an entitlement, account, validation, or version problem:
- Confirm that the signed-in Google account owns Minecraft on Google Play.
- Make sure you did not confuse a Microsoft/Xbox PC purchase with Google Play ownership.
- Update the launcher from Discover or its official project source.
- Check whether the installed Bedrock version is listed as supported.
- Do not download a replacement APK from an unofficial mirror.
If you only own the Windows PC edition, use Windows on the Deck or remote play instead.
“Drowned” or Microsoft login failure
The project documents Xbox login errors, including “Drowned.” It can have more than one cause, so changing the timezone is not a universal fix.

- Verify that the Microsoft account works in a normal browser.
- Update the launcher.
- Try an older supported game version if the launcher offers version selection.
- Test a direct server connection instead of an Xbox friend invite.
- Choose Windows if Xbox integration is essential.
The game launches but is outdated
Unofficial launchers may temporarily lag behind Bedrock releases. Check the project’s supported-version list and select an older supported version if that option is available. Do not force an unsupported version or disable safeguards unless the project’s documentation explicitly tells you how.
Avoid updating immediately before planned multiplayer. Conversely, remember that older versions may have security, server, and account-service limitations.
It works in Desktop Mode but not Game Mode
- Confirm that the application runs from Discover.
- Re-add the correct desktop or application entry to Steam.
- Launch it once in Desktop Mode after a launcher or SteamOS update.
- Check the controller layout.
- Use the project’s documented Flatpak integration method if one is required.
Xbox invitations fail
This may be a known limitation rather than a configuration mistake. Try a direct server connection or local multiplayer, but do not assume either will work for every account or release. For reliable friend invites, use the official Windows, console, or mobile client.
World saves and backups
Back up before changing versions, reinstalling the launcher, or deleting any application data. Never delete launcher data before copying your worlds.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Java world files cannot simply be opened directly by Bedrock.
- Worlds created by the Android-derived Linux launcher may not be stored in the same location as Windows or Android worlds.
- Flatpak, AppImage, and native installations can use different data locations.
- The exact save path can change between releases, so use the current launcher documentation rather than an old guide.
- For important worlds, use Realms or an official supported device for transfers where possible.
Method 2: Install Windows for official Bedrock
Choose Windows if you need the official current Bedrock PC client, dependable Xbox integration, achievements, Marketplace access, Realms compatibility, or the best chance of joining friends through normal Bedrock workflows.
The trade-off is substantial: Windows requires its own installation and maintenance, consumes storage, and may need Steam Deck-specific drivers, controller configuration, power-management adjustments, and sleep-behavior troubleshooting. Dual-booting or using external storage also adds complexity.

- 512 GB NVMe SSD: Fast storage for quicker game load times and space for larger game libraries.
- OLED Display: 1200x800 resolution with deep contrasts and vibrant colors for a captivating visual experience.
- Custom AMD APU: Power-efficient Zen 2 CPU and RDNA 2 GPU for desktop-level gaming performance.
- Expandable Storage: Add more space with a microSD card slot, ensuring you can bring even more games with you.
- Versatile Controls: With built-in thumbsticks, trackpads, and touchscreen controls, you have full control over your gaming experience.
Use Microsoft’s Windows 11 download page as the official starting point, and verify current Steam Deck driver and boot instructions before publishing or following a detailed installation guide. This article does not treat Windows installation as a one-click SteamOS feature.
Once Windows is working, install the official Minecraft Launcher or the supported PC Bedrock client and sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the PC edition. This route uses the Windows PC entitlement; it does not require the Google Play ownership used by the unofficial Linux launcher.
Method 3: Stream Bedrock to the Steam Deck
If you already have a Windows gaming PC or supported console, remote play avoids installing Bedrock on SteamOS. Tools such as Steam Link, Moonlight, and Sunshine can be relevant depending on the host device and setup.
The host device runs Minecraft and retains its official account, update, Marketplace, and multiplayer behavior. The Steam Deck acts as the streaming client. Expect latency and image-quality changes based on Wi-Fi, wired networking, host performance, and encoding settings. This is not a local Bedrock installation.
Can you use Prism Launcher?
Yes—Prism Launcher is an excellent route for Java Edition on SteamOS. It is not the normal solution for Bedrock. Installing Java through Prism will not make a Bedrock-only world or Bedrock multiplayer server automatically compatible, and Java players generally cannot join standard Bedrock worlds directly.
Which method is best?
| Your priority | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Bedrock on SteamOS, while accepting compromises | Try the unofficial launcher, provided you own the Google Play edition. |
| Official current Bedrock and Xbox multiplayer | Install Windows on the Steam Deck. |
| You already have a gaming PC or console | Use remote play. |
| You simply want Minecraft on SteamOS | Use Java Edition through Prism Launcher. |
Recheck the unofficial launcher’s repository and Flathub page immediately before publishing or installing. A Bedrock update can invalidate an otherwise working workaround, and compatibility claims should always identify the launcher version, Bedrock version, SteamOS release, and Steam Deck model tested.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I install Minecraft Bedrock natively on SteamOS?
No. Mojang and Microsoft do not provide an official native Linux or SteamOS Bedrock client. The unofficial Linux launcher runs an Android-derived Bedrock build and is a separate community workaround.
Does buying Minecraft for Windows give me the Google Play version?
No. The PC Java-and-Bedrock bundle is a Windows PC entitlement. The unofficial Linux launcher states that Google Play ownership is required, so do not assume the two purchases are interchangeable.
Will Bedrock on Steam Deck let me play with Xbox friends?
Possibly not. Xbox login, friend joining, invitations, and joining Xbox-hosted worlds are known limitation areas for the unofficial launcher. Use Windows or an official supported device if this is essential.
Is Prism Launcher a Bedrock launcher?
No. Prism Launcher is primarily for Java Edition on Linux. It does not provide ordinary Bedrock compatibility or automatic Java-Bedrock cross-play.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Try the unofficial Bedrock Launcher only if you own Minecraft on Google Play and can accept version and multiplayer compromises. Use Windows for the most reliable official Bedrock experience, or stream from another device if you want to keep SteamOS unchanged.
