If Minecraft shows “Multiplayer is disabled. Please check your Microsoft account settings,” the most likely cause is a Microsoft/Xbox privacy or family-safety restriction. Close Minecraft, have the parent or family organizer allow multiplayer for the affected account, save the change, then sign out and restart the game.
This can affect both Java and Bedrock Edition. Other possible causes include blocked cross-network play, a disabled Bedrock world setting, incompatible versions, a missing console online subscription, account synchronization problems, or a Minecraft ban.
Why Minecraft says multiplayer is disabled
This message is usually an account-level permission error, not a damaged installation. Common symptoms include:
- The Multiplayer button is greyed out.
- Minecraft Realms is unavailable.
- You cannot join servers, friends’ worlds, or some LAN games.
- A Bedrock world reports that multiplayer is disabled.
- The game specifically tells you to check Microsoft account settings.
Microsoft/Xbox family controls can affect Minecraft even when the player does not own or use an Xbox. The exact labels may vary by edition, platform, region, age classification, and the current Xbox interface. Minecraft’s official instructions are available in its child-account multiplayer guide.

First, identify your Minecraft edition
Java Edition
Java Edition runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux and requires a Microsoft account. Microsoft/Xbox privacy settings can still affect multiplayer-related social features, including friend requests and communication. Java players must also use compatible Java versions and cannot directly join ordinary Bedrock worlds or servers.
See Minecraft’s account requirements documentation for the account rules.
Bedrock Edition
Bedrock is used on Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Android, iOS, and other supported platforms. Multiplayer depends on both Microsoft/Xbox account permissions and, when you host a world, the world’s own multiplayer setting. Console online-service requirements may apply.
The quickest fix: allow multiplayer in Microsoft/Xbox settings
- Close Minecraft completely, including the launcher or console app where applicable.
- Open Microsoft/Xbox Privacy & online safety settings.
- Sign in with the parent or family organizer account. A restricted child account normally cannot change its own permissions.
- Select the affected child or player account.
- Open the Xbox/Windows online-safety or privacy settings.
- Set the required permissions to Allow.
- Select Submit or save the changes.
- Sign out of Minecraft, restart the device, and sign in again.
The key permission may be labelled Join multiplayer games or Join multiplayer on Xbox, depending on the interface. Minecraft recommends signing out and restarting after changing these settings; access may not reappear immediately while the change synchronizes.

| What you want to do | Permission to allow |
|---|---|
| Join friends, servers, or multiplayer games | Join multiplayer games or Join multiplayer on Xbox |
| Play with people on other platforms | You can join cross-network play |
| Find or add Minecraft friends | Add friends and follow others |
| Receive friend requests | Others can send you friend requests |
| Use text or voice chat | The relevant online communication or voice & text permission |
You do not need to allow every privacy option. A parent can enable multiplayer while keeping communication or friend-discovery settings restricted. Minecraft explains these controls in its official permission guide.

Use the Xbox Family Settings app
- Close Minecraft.
- Open the Xbox Family Settings app.
- Sign in with the parent or family organizer account.
- Select the affected child account.
- Open Settings.
- Choose the multiplayer, communication, or friends category.
- Allow only the permissions required.
- Restart Minecraft and sign in again.
The parent account must manage restrictions on a child account. If the app shows a different player, gamertag, or email address from the one used in Minecraft, you may be editing the wrong account.
If you play Bedrock Edition
Enable multiplayer for the affected world
If multiplayer works elsewhere but one Bedrock world remains unavailable, check the host’s world settings:
- Select Play.
- Open the Worlds tab.
- Select the pencil or edit icon beside the world.
- Open Multiplayer.
- Enable Multiplayer Game.
- Choose the desired player-access option, such as friends or friends of friends.
- Launch the world and invite players.
A permitted account can still be unable to host players if Multiplayer Game is disabled for that particular world. Minecraft documents this distinction in its Bedrock world invitation guide.
Check cross-platform play
If you can play with people on the same platform but not with friends elsewhere, allow You can join cross-network play. Also confirm that everyone is using Bedrock Edition and compatible versions. Java and Bedrock are separate editions and are not ordinarily cross-compatible.
Check the console subscription
Even when Microsoft permissions are correct, console multiplayer may require the platform’s current online subscription. Minecraft’s troubleshooting guidance lists requirements such as Game Pass Core or the applicable Xbox online entitlement, Nintendo Switch Online, or PlayStation Plus. Names and requirements can change, so check the current plan for your platform rather than relying on older “Xbox Live Gold” guides.

If you play Java Edition
Confirm that the launcher is signed into the Microsoft account that owns the Minecraft entitlement. An account used for Minecraft ownership can differ from the account currently signed into the launcher, which can create confusing access or social-feature problems.
For ordinary multiplayer troubleshooting:
- Use the launcher’s Latest release profile instead of a snapshot or preview.
- Check Microsoft/Xbox permissions for friend requests and online communication.
- Confirm that the server supports your Java version.
- Make sure you are joining a Java server; a standard Bedrock world is not directly joinable from Java.
Java account migration from Mojang accounts officially ended on December 18, 2023. Migration history matters when diagnosing ownership or sign-in confusion, but migrating again is not a normal fix for this error. See Minecraft’s migration information.
What if the settings already say “Allow”?
Work through this checklist in order:
- Verify the account. Compare the email address and gamertag in Minecraft with the account whose settings were changed.
- Check family membership. An adult account may still be part of a Microsoft family group with another organizer controlling restrictions.
- Check age classification. The account’s date of birth and local statutory-age rules can cause Microsoft to treat it as a child account. Do not assume changing the birth date will always solve the problem.
- Repeat the sign-out sequence. Close Minecraft, sign out, restart the device, and sign in again.
- Update the game and launcher. Install the latest compatible release on every device involved.
- Check for account notices or a ban. A ban cannot be fixed by changing privacy settings.
- Test another destination. Try a different friend, server, or world to determine whether the problem affects the account everywhere or only one host.
- Contact official support. If the correct organizer account shows Allow but the game remains disabled after synchronization and restarts, contact Minecraft or Microsoft Support.
There is no guaranteed universal delay for every permission change. Restarting is required by the official guidance, but repeatedly toggling unrelated settings or waiting for a promised fixed period is not a reliable solution.
Multiplayer is enabled, but joining still fails
A greyed-out button and an account-settings message point to permissions. If the button is available but joining fails, investigate a different layer:
- Network: Check VPNs, custom DNS, firewall rules, router configuration, and unusual port settings.
- Host availability: A LAN host, personal server, or hosted world must be online and reachable. A Realm owner does not need to be online for guests to play.
- Versions: Update all players and use compatible releases. Preview, beta, and snapshot builds can cause ordinary multiplayer compatibility problems.
- Edition mismatch: Confirm that Java players are joining Java services and Bedrock players are joining Bedrock services.
- Platform service: Check the console’s required online subscription and service status.
- Server or Realm restriction: The account may be blocked by that particular server, Realm, or host even though Microsoft multiplayer permission is enabled.
For broader connection diagnosis, use Minecraft’s official Bedrock multiplayer troubleshooting guide.

Check whether the account is banned
A Minecraft ban is different from a parental-control restriction. Depending on the enforcement, a banned account may be unable to join servers, join Realms, host multiplayer games, or join multiplayer games.

Minecraft says bans are associated with the Microsoft account’s unique ID, not merely the visible gamertag. Check official account notices and use Minecraft’s appeal process if appropriate. Do not try to evade an enforcement action by creating or using another account. See Minecraft’s ban information.

- Minecraft commands:
/op,/whitelist, and/gamerulecannot override Microsoft/Xbox account permissions. - Reinstalling the game: An account-side restriction normally survives a reinstall.
- Unofficial launchers, registry edits, or mods: These can create additional account, entitlement, or compatibility problems.
- Creating a second account: This can lose access to purchased content or fail to solve the underlying family restriction.
Use the symptom to find the likely cause
| Symptom | Most likely area to check |
|---|---|
| Multiplayer and Realms are greyed out everywhere | Microsoft/Xbox permissions, family restrictions, wrong account, synchronization, or a ban |
| Only one Bedrock world is affected | The world’s Multiplayer Game setting, host permissions, or host availability |
| Same-platform play works, cross-platform play does not | Cross-network permission, edition mismatch, or platform limits |
| Settings say Allow but Minecraft remains disabled | Wrong account, family organizer, age classification, synchronization, updates, or account enforcement |
| The button is available but joining times out | Network, DNS, firewall, host, server, Realm, or version conditions |
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Minecraft multiplayer disabled if I am over 18?
Your account may still belong to a Microsoft family group, be classified under the local statutory age, or be signed into the wrong Microsoft account. Check the family organizer, account details, and gamertag rather than immediately creating another account.
Can I fix the error inside Minecraft?
Usually not. The main restriction is controlled through Microsoft/Xbox privacy or family settings. Bedrock also has a separate world-level Multiplayer Game toggle.
Does Java Edition use Xbox settings?
Java does not use Bedrock’s world multiplayer menu, but Microsoft/Xbox privacy and social permissions can affect Java multiplayer-related features such as friend requests and communication.

Do I need Xbox Game Pass Core to play Minecraft online?
Console online multiplayer may require the platform’s current online subscription. The exact requirement depends on the console and current service rules; Microsoft account permission alone may not be sufficient.
How long do Microsoft family-setting changes take?
There is no guaranteed universal delay. Save the change, sign out of Minecraft, restart the device, and sign in again. If the restriction persists after a reasonable synchronization period, continue with account troubleshooting or contact official support.
Why is only one Bedrock world affected?
The world’s own Multiplayer Game setting may be disabled, or the host may be offline or restricted. Edit the world from Play > Worlds and check its Multiplayer settings.
Does reinstalling Minecraft fix the error?
Usually no. Reinstallation does not normally remove a Microsoft/Xbox account restriction, so verify permissions and account identity first.
