Most Steam Deck owners should start with a 512GB or 1TB UHS-I microSD card. Add a screen protector only if you accept its effect on image quality, buy a 45W USB-C PD power bank or second charger for travel, and get a dock only if you use a TV, monitor, Ethernet, keyboard, mouse, or external storage. The LCD and OLED models share most accessories, but screen protectors, cases, and internal repair parts require model-specific checks.
You also may not need to buy anything immediately: every Steam Deck includes a carrying case, a 45W USB-C PD charger, a microSD slot, a 3.5mm headset jack, Bluetooth, and USB-C display output. Valve’s specifications confirm the core connectivity and power details.
Quick buying guide
| Accessory | Best for | LCD/OLED | Buy or skip? | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 512GB or 1TB microSD | Affordable game storage | Both | Buy for most owners | Use a reputable seller; the slot is UHS-I |
| Screen protector | Travel and scratch protection | Model-specific | Optional | Can change glare, sharpness, and touch feel |
| 45W USB-C PD charger | Travel, work, or school | Both | Buy only if a second charger helps | Check the PD profile, not just wattage |
| Power bank | Portable play away from outlets | Both | Useful for travelers | At least 45W USB-C PD; capacity alone is misleading |
| Dock or USB-C hub | TV, monitor, peripherals, Ethernet | Both | Buy for docked use | Check case fit and simultaneous-device behavior |
| Grip or shell case | Comfort and play protection | Usually both | Optional | May not fit the original case or dock |
| Internal SSD | Large libraries and low-capacity Decks | Model-specific procedure | Advanced upgrade | Requires opening the Deck and recovering SteamOS |
1. Best storage upgrade: a 512GB or 1TB microSD card
A high-capacity microSD card is the safest first upgrade. It adds game storage without opening the Deck, reinstalling SteamOS, or risking damage to internal components. The built-in reader supports UHS-I, SD, SDXC, and SDHC cards, so choose a reputable UHS-I card rather than paying extra for specifications the Deck cannot use. Valve’s technical specifications provide the supported card standards.
For most libraries, 512GB is the value sweet spot; 1TB makes more sense if you regularly keep large modern games installed. Products such as the Samsung PRO Plus microSD, SanDisk Extreme or Ultra ranges, Lexar Play or Professional lines, and Kingston Canvas cards are sensible categories to compare. Verify the exact capacity, warranty, and seller before ordering.
#1 Best Overall
- 6-in-1 USB-C Hub: Connect, charge, and play without limits thanks to a 100W PD-IN port for fast charging, a 4K HDMI output, a 1Gbps Ethernet port, two USB-A ports at 5Gbps each, and one USB-C port at 5Gbps.
- See Every Detail: The 4K@60Hz HDMI port brings your games to life with stunning resolution and crystal-clear imagery.(Note: The USB-C data port does not support screen mirroring.)
- Ultra-Speed Ethernet: Dominate online play with lightning-fast 1,000 Mbps Ethernet, where every millisecond counts.
- Unlimited Connections: Maximize your gameplay with versatile USB ports, offering 5Gbps speed for mice, keyboards, game controllers, and more.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (6-in-1, For Handheld Game Console), 8.66-inch (220 mm) built-in USB C cable, welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Do not assume that the most expensive “gaming” card will transform performance. Capacity, reliability, sustained behavior, and price matter more than small sequential-speed differences. Marketplace counterfeits are a bigger concern than modest benchmark gaps, so avoid suspiciously cheap cards and sellers with poor return or warranty support.
microSD or internal SSD?
- Choose microSD for the easiest and lowest-risk storage expansion.
- Choose an SSD upgrade only if you need faster internal storage, own a lower-capacity Deck, or are comfortable with repair work and SteamOS recovery.
2. Best dock: Valve’s Steam Deck Docking Station
The Valve Steam Deck Docking Station is the safest first-party choice for a TV or monitor setup. Valve’s product page showed a price of $79 during the research pass; prices vary by market, tax, and promotions. Valve explicitly says the dock is shaped to hold both LCD and OLED Decks. The official dock page also describes support for displays, controllers, keyboards, mice, and other peripherals.
Buy it when you want a relatively supported desktop setup and do not mind paying more for the first-party option. A reputable third-party dock can be better value if it offers the ports you actually need: HDMI or DisplayPort, at least two useful USB ports, Gigabit Ethernet, USB-C power input, and a replaceable or sufficiently long host cable.
Check the dock’s advertised HDMI version and resolution or refresh-rate limits, but remember that “4K” describes output capability—not guaranteed 4K gaming performance. Some docks behave more reliably when the Deck’s charger is connected first, and a dock may not deliver its headline wattage to the Deck. A 100W input rating does not mean the handheld receives 100W.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBefore buying a dock
- Measure the Deck with its case installed.
- Confirm that the cradle is wide enough and the USB-C connector reaches the port.
- Check whether HDMI, Ethernet, card readers, and USB devices can operate together as required.
- Confirm whether the charger is included.
- Prefer firmware-updatable models where the manufacturer supports that process.
For occasional monitor or peripheral use, a compact USB-C hub is often preferable to a full desktop dock. It is smaller, cheaper, and easier to pack, but usually offers less stable physical support and fewer dedicated ports.
3. Best screen protector: model-matched tempered glass
A tempered-glass protector with an alignment tray is the safest general choice for owners who travel with the Deck. It is not mandatory: people who mostly play at home and prioritize maximum clarity can reasonably skip one.

- Full-Speed 100W Charging: Supports up to 100W PD charging, easily powering your handheld in Turbo Mode. Keeps your gaming sessions uninterrupted — no need to worry about battery drain even during marathon play. Note: The ROG Ally's 30W Turbo Mode is fully supported, but a 100W charger is recommended.
- Gigabit Ethernet: Enhance your gaming with gigabit Ethernet for seamless online play, rapid updates, and quick file transfers. Enjoy lightning-fast downloads and uploads, eliminating lag and latency for uninterrupted sessions.
- Expanded Device Compatibility: Now works with Steam Deck LCD/OLED, ROG Ally / Ally X, Legion Go / Go S, and MSI Claw — making it your all-in-one solution across multiple handhelds. NOTE: Not for ROG XBOX Ally / XBOX Ally X.
LCD and OLED protectors are not automatically interchangeable. The LCD uses a 7-inch, 60Hz display, while the OLED uses a 7.4-inch display with HDR and up to 90Hz. Check Valve’s display specifications and buy a listing explicitly labeled for the correct model.
Potential products to compare include Spigen tempered glass, JSAUX protectors, and dbrand glass. Verify the live listing because each brand may sell separate LCD, glossy-OLED, and anti-glare-OLED versions.

OLED anti-glare warning
- Glossy OLED: clear glass generally preserves the intended appearance better, while adding scratch protection.
- Anti-glare OLED: a matte protector may preserve glare reduction but introduce haze or grain; clear glass may look sharper but reduce the original anti-glare benefit.
A protector can change reflections, contrast, sharpness, touch feel, and the appearance of the OLED coating. Choose protection based on your environment rather than treating it as essential for every owner.
4. Best grip or protective case
The supplied Valve case is already a strong baseline. Add a thin shell or grip case only if the Deck feels uncomfortable, needs protection during play, or must support a kickstand or accessory mount.
- Minimalist: keep the Valve case and add a thin shell only when playing.
- Modular: the JSAUX ModCase is designed around combinations of back protection, grips, a kickstand, front protection, and accessory mounts. Exact bundle contents vary by version.
- Comfort-focused: compare established grip specialists such as Skull & Co. and check button, vent, port, and dock clearance.
Prioritize grip texture, stable kickstand behavior, unobstructed vents, USB-C access, and compatibility with the OLED or LCD model. Do not assume a case advertised for several handhelds has the correct Deck port and button clearance.
The case-and-dock problem
A case that fits the Deck may not fit inside the official dock. Check the installed thickness, cradle width, connector reach, and whether the case has a removable front cover or bottom flap. Also confirm whether the protected Deck still fits the original Valve case. This compatibility check is more useful than a generic “rugged” label.

5. Best carrying case: keep Valve’s case unless you need more
Buying another full carrying case is unnecessary if the included Valve case protects the Deck and holds what you carry. Upgrade when you need space for a charger, power bank, dock, cables, earbuds, or a grip case; a shoulder strap or commuting-friendly organization can also justify the extra bulk.
Tomtoc carrying cases are a common larger-case alternative. Compare the exact LCD/OLED listing and internal dimensions, especially if the Deck wears a grip case. Use “protective shell” for a case that stays attached during play and “carrying case” for a transport organizer; retailers often use “hard case” for both.
6. Best power bank: 45W USB-C PD or higher
For travel, choose a USB-C power bank capable of delivering at least 45W through USB-C Power Delivery. Valve specifies a 45W PD3.0 charger, and its battery-life estimate is a broad 3–12 hours depending on use—not a promise of a fixed runtime. See Valve’s power and battery specifications.
A roughly 20,000mAh model is a practical starting point for balancing useful capacity and weight. Compare Anker Prime or laptop-class power banks, Baseus high-output models, and INIU USB-C laptop power banks. Confirm that USB-C supports both input and output, that the advertised output is available from one port, and that the manufacturer explicitly supports pass-through charging if you need it.
Capacity alone is not enough. A large battery with insufficient USB-C PD output may charge slowly or fail to keep up during demanding games. “65W” or “100W total” may also be shared across ports. A power bank strapped to the Deck is convenient but affects comfort; carrying it separately is less elegant but improves ergonomics. Check applicable airline limits for your country and itinerary.
7. Best extra charger: another reputable 45W USB-C PD unit
The included charger is sufficient for normal use. A second charger makes sense for a travel bag, office, school, or permanent dock setup. Choose a reputable USB-C PD charger rated for 45W or more and pair it with a cable rated for the intended power. A generic phone charger should not be recommended without checking its USB-C PD profiles.

- PD 100W Fast Charging: Supporting up to 100W power delivery, this docking station ensures your Type-C game device charges at maximum speed. Perfectly supports ROG Ally 30W Turbo mode to unleash surging performance.Note: Steam Deck max charging speed is 45W, while ROG Ally reaches 65W.
- Widely Compatible: This handheld gaming dock is widely compatible with gaming consoles such as Steam Deck, ROG Ally, ROG X, ROG Xbox Ally, LEGION Go and MSI Claw A1M. Also it is widely compatible with various USB-C devices to meet a variety of needs, like iPad Pro/Air, Surface Pro8 & Go 3. Not compatible with Swith 2
Higher wattage can be useful when one charger also powers another laptop or device, but it is not necessary for the Deck alone. The important requirement is a suitable USB-C PD profile and a cable that can support the charger’s intended output.
8. Best audio accessory: wired for simplicity, Bluetooth for convenience
The Deck supports 3.5mm wired headsets, Bluetooth 5.3 audio, USB-C audio, and multichannel audio through DisplayPort over USB-C. Valve lists these audio and connectivity options.

- Bluetooth earbuds: compact and convenient for travel, but latency, codec behavior, and wireless interference vary on SteamOS.
- USB-C headset: useful when the 3.5mm jack is occupied or when your setup already uses USB-C audio.
- Over-ear headset: better isolation for long sessions, but heavier and less portable.
Do not assume every Bluetooth headset performs identically. For rhythm games, competitive play, or troubleshooting, wired audio remains the simpler recommendation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.9. Best desktop accessories: keyboard, mouse, and controller
These are situational rather than required. The Deck already has two trackpads, gyro controls, touch input, and four assignable rear grip buttons, so an external controller is mainly for couch play or multiplayer.
A compact Bluetooth keyboard is useful for Desktop Mode, text entry, launchers, and troubleshooting. A small model in the Logitech compact keyboard category, such as the K380 class, is easier to travel with than a full-size mechanical keyboard. Add a mouse for strategy games, desktop applications, and precise docked navigation. A wireless receiver can be connected through a dock or hub.
10. Best advanced upgrade: an internal M.2 2230 SSD
An SSD upgrade increases storage, not CPU or GPU performance. It is appropriate for owners with very large libraries or a low-capacity Deck who are comfortable opening the device. It is not a default accessory recommendation.

Safe high-level sequence
- Back up important data.
- Shut down the Deck completely.
- Remove the microSD card before opening the shell. Leaving it installed can damage or break the card.
- Enter BIOS battery-storage mode where appropriate and discharge the battery below 25% before repair.
- Remove the rear screws and back cover.
- Remove the shield and disconnect the battery.
- Replace the M.2 2230 drive.
- Reassemble carefully, preserving screw locations and avoiding pinched cables.
- Use Valve’s Steam Deck recovery resources to reinstall or restore SteamOS.
Opening the Deck carries risks, including stripped screws, damaged clips, pinched cables, and accidental component damage. If you only need more game space, buy a microSD card instead.
What to buy by owner type
- New owner: start with a 512GB microSD card. Add a screen protector only after deciding whether clarity or scratch protection matters more.
- Frequent traveler: add a 45W-or-better power bank, compact charger, grip case, and larger carrying case.
- TV player: buy a dock, external controller, and HDMI cable; add Ethernet if your setup benefits from a wired connection.
- Desktop Mode user: buy a dock or hub, compact keyboard, mouse, and external display as needed.
- Large-library owner: choose a 1TB microSD first; consider an SSD only if you accept repair and recovery work.
- OLED image-quality enthusiast: use a carefully matched protector—or skip it to preserve the original display treatment.
Accessories many owners can skip
You do not need a second case if the supplied one works, a dock if you never connect a display or peripherals, a power bank if you normally play near wall power, or an SSD if a microSD card solves your storage problem. You can also skip Bluetooth audio in favor of the built-in 3.5mm jack. Be cautious with unverified “cooling” accessories: the dossier provides no evidence that they improve Deck performance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Steam Deck LCD and OLED accessories work together?
Chargers, docks, hubs, microSD cards, Bluetooth devices, wired headsets, and most external peripherals generally serve both models. Screen protectors, grip cases, carrying cases, and internal repair parts need explicit model and fit checks.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What is the first Steam Deck accessory to buy?
For most owners, a reputable 512GB or 1TB UHS-I microSD card is the best first purchase. A dock, power bank, second charger, or extra case should match a specific use case.
Is a 45W power bank enough for Steam Deck?
It meets the Deck’s stated charger target when that output is available through USB-C PD. Check the single-port output and PD profile; total wattage and mAh capacity alone do not prove compatibility.
Should OLED owners use a screen protector?
They may, especially for travel, but the protector can change reflections, sharpness, touch feel, and the anti-glare OLED appearance. Buy one labeled for the exact OLED display or skip it if maximum image quality is the priority.
The Bottom Line
Start with storage, not a catalog. Buy a reputable 512GB or 1TB UHS-I microSD card, then add only the accessory that fixes your limitation: a 45W USB-C PD power bank or charger for travel, a dock or hub for external displays and peripherals, a model-matched screen protector for scratch protection, or a grip case for comfort. Treat an internal SSD as an advanced repair project, not a routine upgrade.
