Origin has been replaced by the EA app on PC and Mac. Your purchases are generally tied to your EA Account—not the old Origin client—so you should not need to buy eligible games again. The safest order is: protect your saves and game files first, install the official EA app, sign in with the original account, confirm your library, and test important games before deleting anything.
EA’s current support documentation confirms that Origin has shut down and directs players to the EA app. Read EA’s installation guidance.
What the Origin shutdown actually affects
Origin was the PC and Mac client used to authenticate, download, update, and launch EA games. Its replacement is the EA app. That change does not automatically mean that your purchases, installed files, or saves have been erased.
These are separate things:
- EA Account: The account that identifies you and stores your eligible purchases and account data.
- Digital ownership: The game and DLC entitlements attached to that account.
- Installed game files: Files already stored on your computer.
- Local saves: Save files stored on your drive, often in a game-specific Documents or AppData folder.
- Cloud saves: Copies synchronized through EA or another platform. These are useful, but are not a substitute for an independent backup.
- Online services: Authentication, multiplayer, servers, anti-cheat, and other services that can have separate availability requirements.
EA says that purchases, achievements, playtime, friends, and supported local and cloud data carry over to the EA app. Treat that as the migration policy, not as a guarantee that every title, account, platform link, or cloud synchronization event will work without problems. See EA’s Windows migration FAQ and its Mac migration announcement.

Do this before uninstalling anything
Protect first, migrate second. Use this checklist:
- Do not uninstall Origin, delete game folders, or wipe the computer yet.
- Write down the email address and EA Account used for the purchases.
- Confirm that you can access that email account and reset your EA password if necessary.
- Take screenshots of important library entries, DLC, and purchase receipts if they are still available.
- Close each game and the EA client before copying save files.
- Back up important saves to at least two locations.
- Copy important mod, configuration, reshade, and load-order files separately.
- Preserve existing game folders where you have enough storage.
- Install the official EA app and sign in with the original EA Account.
- Launch your most important games and verify saves, DLC, achievements, and settings.
- Keep your backups until every important title has been tested successfully.
Install the EA app and check your library
Download the client only from EA’s official EA app page or follow EA’s download and installation instructions.
- Install and launch the EA app.
- Sign in with the same EA Account credentials formerly used with Origin.
- Open Library.
- Find a game you own.
- Select the download arrow on its tile.
- Confirm the installation location and language settings.
- Install or launch the game.
If the library is empty, the most likely explanation is that you signed into a different EA Account. The same computer—or even the same email address used for another platform—does not prove that you are using the account that owns the game.
Do you have to buy your games again?
Usually, no. EA says games purchased through Origin remain available through the EA app when you sign in to the EA Account that owns them. This applies to the correct account and eligible entitlement, not automatically to every copy, code, edition, region, or platform.
Problems can arise when:
- You have multiple EA Accounts.
- A physical copy or promotional code was never correctly redeemed.
- DLC was purchased on another account or platform.
- The game is delisted or has compatibility limitations.
- You are confusing an EA Play subscription entitlement with a permanent purchase.
- A console, Steam, or Epic entitlement is being checked through a different linked EA Account.
Search old EA receipts and product-code records before contacting support. Do not buy a second copy until EA confirms that the original entitlement cannot be recovered.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBack up local saves manually
This is the most important protection step. EA says supported saves can transfer to the EA app, but cloud synchronization can fail, select the wrong version, or be unavailable during an account or connection problem. A manual backup gives you an independent recovery option.

A safe save-backup procedure
- Close the game completely.
- Close the EA app and any other launcher involved.
- Find that game’s save directory using the title’s official support documentation or its established save-location conventions.
- Copy the entire save folder, preserving its names and folder structure.
- Store one copy on an external drive and another on a separate local drive or trusted cloud-storage location.
- Name the backup clearly, such as
GameName-saves-2026-09-05. - For valuable long-term saves, keep several dated versions rather than repeatedly overwriting one backup.
- After migration, launch the game and confirm the expected save is present before removing anything.
There is no universal EA save folder. Locations vary by game, edition, operating system, mods, and whether saves are handled by the EA app, Steam Cloud, Epic, or another service. EA’s backup guidance specifically recommends protecting saves before moving to a new computer or installing an operating system. See EA’s backup and restore guidance.
If the EA app or a game asks you to choose between local and cloud data, do not choose hastily. First preserve the current folder, compare timestamps, and make another copy before restoring anything.
What happens to games already installed through Origin?
Ownership and installation files are different. The EA app should recognize games attached to your EA Account, but EA’s current documentation does not guarantee that every existing Origin installation will be adopted perfectly without verification or a redownload.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To reduce wasted downloads:
- Back up the existing game folder before changing its location.
- Do not move or rename your only copy.
- In the EA app, begin installing the game and select the existing installation location where the interface allows it.
- Watch whether the app verifies existing files or starts downloading from scratch.
- If a full download begins, retain the old copy until the new installation launches successfully.
A copied game folder may save download time, but it does not necessarily contain entitlement records, launcher metadata, DRM components, updates, anti-cheat software, or third-party dependencies. Keep mods, configuration files, reshades, and load-order tools backed up separately; a clean installation may not preserve them.
Supported operating systems
EA’s current download information lists these requirements for the EA app:
Rank #3
- Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Windows: 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- Mac: macOS Catalina or newer.
- Chromebooks: Not supported by the EA app.
Check EA’s current platform requirements before migrating an older computer. You may still own a game while being unable to use the current EA app on unsupported hardware or an unsupported operating system. Ownership is not the same as present-day technical access.
Games bought through Steam or Epic
Many EA games bought through Steam or Epic still invoke EA authentication on PC. EA says the EA app is required for EA games on PC purchased through those storefronts, although the exact arrangement varies by title and distribution. Check EA’s platform information.
Keep these distinctions in mind:
- The Steam or Epic account may need to be linked to an EA Account.
- The game may launch from Steam or Epic while opening EA authentication in the background.
- A wrong account link can make a legitimate purchase appear missing.
- A Steam or Epic save is not automatically interchangeable with an EA app purchase of the same game.
- Buying the EA version again does not necessarily merge ownership, DLC, or saves.
If a Steam or Epic game is missing, identify the linked EA Account and contact EA Support before purchasing another copy.
Can you play EA games offline?
EA’s help documentation says a game can work offline for 30 days after it was last launched online. That is not a promise of indefinite offline access, and individual games can impose stricter requirements.
First launches, entitlement checks, patches, DLC, anti-cheat, third-party launchers, and multiplayer generally require an internet connection. Test offline play before traveling or disconnecting rather than assuming it will work. Review EA’s offline-play guidance.

EA’s same help material also states that a game can be installed on up to five computers in a 24-hour period, while hardware changes and virtual machines may count as new computers. Avoid repeatedly activating and reinstalling during troubleshooting.
Troubleshooting common failures
The library is empty or incomplete
- Sign out of the EA app.
- Sign back in using the original EA Account.
- Search old EA receipts for the purchasing email.
- Check whether the game was bought through Steam, Epic, console, EA Play, or a redeemed code.
- Confirm that the platform account is linked to the intended EA Account.
- Contact EA Support before buying anything again.
The game appears but will not launch
- Confirm that the EA app is online and updated.
- Install available game updates.
- Check operating-system compatibility.
- Temporarily test without mods, reshades, or custom launchers.
- Check firewall and antivirus rules.
- Confirm that the EA background service is running.
- Check anti-cheat and third-party launcher requirements.
- Try running the installer or client with the required administrator privileges.
EA specifically identifies EADesktop.exe, EALauncher.exe, and EABackgroundService.exe among the executables that may need to be allowed through security software. Follow EA’s official installation troubleshooting steps rather than downloading an unofficial Origin installer.
Installed files are not recognized
Keep the original folder untouched, attempt installation to that location if the EA app permits it, and allow verification or redownloading to complete. Do not delete the old copy until the replacement launches and your saves work.
Saves are missing or the wrong save appears
Stop launching the game repeatedly in case synchronization overwrites data. Close the game and EA app, copy the current save folder, compare it with your dated backup, and restore only after preserving both versions. Check Documents, AppData, game-specific folders, and any Steam or Epic cloud-storage location relevant to the title.
The computer cannot run the EA app
Verify that Windows is 64-bit and supported, or that the Mac runs Catalina or newer. If an upgrade is impractical, investigate whether the title is available on another supported platform—but do not assume a new platform purchase transfers ownership or saves. Avoid unofficial clients and account-bypass tools, which create security, licensing, and compatibility risks.

What the shutdown does not guarantee
- Account ownership does not guarantee that every game will remain playable forever.
- A local installation does not guarantee future activation or server availability.
- Cloud saves are not independent archival backups.
- A delisted game may remain in your library but still have installation or compatibility restrictions.
- Online multiplayer can disappear independently of the Origin-to-EA-app transition.
- A game-folder copy does not automatically preserve saves, mods, licensing, or launcher metadata.
Final migration checklist
- EA app installed from EA’s official website.
- Original EA Account credentials confirmed.
- Library and major purchases checked.
- Receipts, codes, and platform links identified.
- Important saves copied to two locations.
- Mods and configuration files copied separately.
- Existing game folders retained until testing is complete.
- Important games launched successfully.
- DLC and achievements checked.
- Offline behavior tested where relevant.
- Backups retained after migration.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will uninstalling Origin delete my games?
Uninstalling the client should not by itself erase purchases tied to your EA Account, but it can remove access to locally installed files or complicate recovery. Back up saves and important game folders first.
What should I do if an Origin purchase is missing in the EA app?
Sign out and try the original EA Account, search old receipts for the purchasing email, check platform links and redeemed codes, and contact EA Support before buying the game again.
Are EA cloud saves enough?
No. EA says supported cloud and local data can carry over, but manual copies protect you from account, synchronization, overwrite, and drive failures.
The Bottom Line
Origin’s replacement is the EA app, not a demand to repurchase your library. Sign in with the correct EA Account, back up local saves independently, preserve existing installations and mods, and test every important game before deleting old files.
