Yes—a local Steam cache can save substantial WAN bandwidth when several PCs repeatedly download the same games or updates. The first PC still downloads uncached data from Steam, but later PCs can receive reusable content across the LAN. For most home labs, LAN parties, cafés, and esports venues, the practical open-source solution is LanCache.NET’s monolithic Docker deployment, integrated through DNS.
It is usually unnecessary for one gaming PC, and it is not the same as Valve’s SteamPipe Local Content Server, which is intended primarily for developers distributing their own Steamworks depot builds.
What a local Steam cache actually solves
Imagine five PCs downloading the same 100 GB game. Without caching, the internet connection may transfer roughly 500 GB. With a working cache, the WAN may need to retrieve approximately 100 GB once, while subsequent requests are served from local storage.
That is an illustrative calculation, not a guarantee. Patches, changed manifests, cache eviction, different CDN behavior, unsupported traffic, and incomplete reuse can all reduce the saving.

- LAN delivery: later clients can download from the cache host over Ethernet.
- Acceleration: cache hits can be much faster; the first cache miss remains constrained by your internet connection, Steam’s CDN, disk activity, and the cache’s behavior.
- Storage reuse: the cache stores downloadable content, not Steam licenses, accounts, or complete user installations.
Who should build one?
LanCache is most useful for:
- LAN-party and esports-event organizers.
- Gaming cafés with repeated installations.
- Households with several gaming PCs.
- Developers and testers who repeatedly install the same titles.
- Users with data caps, slow connections, or expensive bandwidth.
Skip it if you have one PC, rarely reinstall games, cannot control client DNS, or would need to buy a large server and disk for only occasional use. Manually copying a Steam library may be simpler for a few known machines.
How LanCache works
- DNS steering: clients use the LanCache DNS service. Selected game-CDN hostnames resolve to the cache host’s private LAN address.
- Cache miss: the cache retrieves requested content from the upstream CDN and stores it on disk.
- Cache hit: another client requesting the same cacheable ranges receives them from the local cache.
- Other traffic: the DNS service forwards unrelated queries upstream.
This is not a conventional HTTP proxy that you configure inside Steam. DNS is the central integration point. LanCache can pass through HTTPS traffic, but it cannot ordinarily cache encrypted HTTPS content.
Hardware and network checklist
- A modern Linux distribution with Docker and Docker Compose support.
- A stable private IPv4 address, such as
192.168.1.50. - A dedicated cache volume separate from the operating-system disk.
- Enough capacity for the games, updates, and churn your network actually reuses.
- Gigabit Ethernet at minimum; wired clients are strongly preferable for events.
- Router or DHCP access so clients can receive only the LanCache DNS server.
Storage is normally the most important purchase. A useful planning formula is:
cache size = shared library + patch churn + event headroom + free-space reserveSSD or NVMe storage is recommended for larger groups and simultaneous downloads, but it is not universally required. LanCache’s published hardware examples include a home setup reporting approximately 240 Mbps from a 2 TB hard drive and a small setup reporting roughly 800–900 Mbps with SSD assistance. These are project-reported examples, not guaranteed benchmarks.
For a small household, a low-power refurbished mini-PC with a separate drive may be sufficient. Larger LANs may benefit from SSD/NVMe storage, multiple network interfaces, and a faster switch. CPU and RAM matter, but disk I/O, network capacity, concurrency, and cache size usually matter more.
Install LanCache with Docker Compose
1. Prepare the host
Install Linux and Docker using Docker’s current official documentation. Avoid assuming that a distribution’s Docker package is current or supported.
Give the host a stable private address reachable by every gaming PC. Reserve it in DHCP or configure a suitable static address. The example below uses 192.168.1.50.

2. Obtain the maintained deployment
LanCache’s current quick-start path is:
git clone https://github.com/lancachenet/docker-compose/ lancache --depth=1
cd lancache
nano .env
docker compose up -dUse the repository’s supplied Compose files and .env template rather than treating an old hand-written Compose file as permanent. Service names and variables can change.
3. Configure the environment
At minimum, verify values equivalent to:
LANCACHE_IP=192.168.1.50
CACHE_ROOT=/path/to/cache
CACHE_DISK_SIZE=2tReplace the example values. LANCACHE_IP is the address returned by LanCache DNS, CACHE_ROOT is the persistent cache location, and CACHE_DISK_SIZE describes the intended cache volume. Do not fill the disk completely; LanCache documents a default free-space reserve of approximately 10 GB.
4. Start and inspect the services
docker compose up -d
docker compose ps
docker compose logs --tail=100The cache and DNS services should be running. The current Compose project may also include an SNI proxy. Use docker compose ps to see the actual names rather than relying on names from older guides.
Configure DNS correctly
In the router’s DHCP or LAN settings, distribute the LanCache DNS address:
192.168.1.50For reliable interception, clients should use only the LanCache DNS service. Do not add Google DNS, Cloudflare DNS, an ISP resolver, or another fallback directly to client DHCP settings. A client choosing an external resolver can bypass the cache intermittently.

ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /renewThen check resolution:
nslookup lancache.steamcontent.comThe answer should be the cache host’s private IPv4 address when that hostname is covered by the current LanCache configuration. Do not rely on an old hostname list; use the domains shipped with the current project.
IPv6 and encrypted DNS
DNS-over-HTTPS, DNS-over-TLS, hard-coded resolver settings, or IPv6-provided external DNS can bypass the intended path. LanCache currently documents that its DNS component does not enable IPv6 interception; an unmodified IPv6 CDN answer may therefore send a client directly to Steam.

For a controlled event network, you may choose to manage or temporarily disable IPv6 advertisements, but that is not a blanket recommendation for every home network.
Prove that the cache is working
Use a deliberately uncached game or update.
- Start the download on PC A.
- Watch the containers and confirm upstream activity.
- Let the download complete, or cache a substantial portion.
- Start the same download on PC B.
- Check that PC B’s traffic is primarily local and that WAN usage does not rise as it did for PC A.
Follow the Compose logs with:
docker compose logs -fFor the standalone monolithic container, LanCache documents the access log at /data/logs/access.log and persistent data at /data/cache:
docker exec -it lancache tail -f /data/logs/access.logSteam’s displayed average can be misleading during the first miss: the cache may retrieve and slice upstream data before delivering it rapidly over the LAN. Validate with access logs, router WAN utilization, cache-disk activity, switch-port traffic, and a second-client test—not just Steam’s speed number.

The cache stays empty
The most likely cause is DNS bypass. Confirm the client’s active DNS server and run:

Port 53 will not bind
systemd-resolved may already occupy the local DNS port. LanCache documents this conditional fix:
sudo -e /etc/systemd/resolved.confSet:
DNSStubListener=noThen run:
sudo rm /etc/resolv.conf
sudo ln -s /var/run/systemd/resolve/resolv.conf /etc/resolv.conf
sudo service systemd-resolved restart
nslookup lancache.netDo this only when the port conflict exists, and understand the effect on the host’s DNS configuration.
Ports 80 or 443 are already used
A web server, Pi-hole, Unbound, NAS interface, Kubernetes ingress, or another container may occupy ports required by the deployment. Identify and relocate the conflicting service, use a dedicated IP or VM, or choose a different host. LanCache specifically discusses port conflicts in its common-issues guide.
Containers do not return after reboot
Inspect actual names first:
docker ps --format 'table {{.Names}}t{{.Status}}'Then apply a restart policy to the relevant containers, for example:
sudo docker update --restart unless-stopped lancache_monolithic_1
sudo docker update --restart unless-stopped lancache_dns_1Names vary by Compose project and version.
The first download is slow
That is expected for a cache miss. The first request still comes from the internet, and the progress display may be misleading while content is fetched and sliced. Judge performance using WAN traffic and a second client.
Performance collapses with several clients
Check disk latency and sustained writes first. A slow hard drive can become the bottleneck under concurrent range requests even when the CPU is mostly idle. Upgrade storage, verify gigabit or faster links, and avoid Wi-Fi bottlenecks before changing advanced settings.
The cache fills the disk
Use a dedicated, monitored volume. Review CACHE_DISK_SIZE, CACHE_MAX_AGE, and the configured free-space reserve. Never allow cache growth to consume the operating system’s root filesystem.

Content is not reused
Possible explanations include changed patch ranges, eviction, an uncovered CDN hostname, HTTPS or another unsupported path, DNS bypass, or a launcher changing its download behavior. LanCache’s monolithic service is designed for HTTP content and supports HTTP range requests; it cannot cache arbitrary encrypted HTTPS traffic.
Performance tuning: fix fundamentals first
LanCache’s advanced tuning documentation warns that slice-size changes have trade-offs. The documented default is 1 MB. Larger slices may help some single-user cases but can increase waiting time for multiple users and invalidate much of the existing cache.
Do not tune slices before confirming DNS, storage, ports, and network paths. For larger installations, additional IP addresses and more advanced layouts may be useful, but they are infrastructure projects—not necessary steps for a normal home deployment.
Alternatives
Copy an existing Steam library
For two or three known PCs, copying game files to another machine and letting Steam discover and validate them may be easier than administering DNS, Docker, and a cache volume. It is less convenient for frequent patches, many machines, mixed operating systems, or unplanned events.
SteamPipe Local Content Server
Use Valve’s SteamPipe LCS when you develop or publish a Steam game and need local delivery of your own depot builds. It uses Steamworks SDK tooling and is not a general-purpose cache for arbitrary retail Steam downloads.
NAS or virtual machine
A NAS can be suitable if it supports Docker or a dedicated Linux VM, persistent volumes, adequate disk I/O, and uncontested access to ports 53, 80, and 443. Buying a NAS solely for LanCache is rarely the simplest route. For problematic deployments, LanCache notes that a dedicated Ubuntu VM with its own IP can be easier.
Is it worth the cost?
LanCache itself is open source and primarily free to deploy. The real costs are the host, cache disk, electricity, administration, and eventual storage replacement.
Estimate value by asking:
- How many identical installations or updates happen each month?
- How large are they?
- Does the ISP impose a data cap or overage cost?
- How much faster would local delivery make an event or café reset?
- Would manual library copying solve the same problem with less maintenance?
A low-power mini-PC and large secondary drive can be a sensible home solution. A fast SSD-backed host and managed gigabit or multi-gigabit network make more sense for many simultaneous clients. Expensive enterprise hardware is difficult to justify for a single-PC household.
