To fix CE-33116-4, follow Sony’s escalation order: restart the PS4, use Safe Mode’s Option 5: Rebuild Database, back up your data, and initialize the console only if the error continues. If initialization or system-software reinstallation does not resolve it, contact PlayStation Support or arrange a repair.
Sony describes CE-33116-4 only as “An error has occurred in the system.” The code does not, by itself, prove that your hard drive, saved data, or a particular game is defective.
What CE-33116-4 means
CE-33116-4 is a broad PS4 system error. It is not specifically identified by Sony as a network, account, payment, or disc error, and Sony’s dedicated support page does not publish one confirmed cause.
The problem may be temporary, or it may involve corrupted database information, system storage, or system software. If it keeps returning after recovery steps, a failing internal hard drive or another hardware fault becomes more plausible—but the code alone cannot establish that diagnosis.

Fix CE-33116-4 in order
1. Restart the PS4
- Save your progress or close the affected application if the console still responds.
- Restart the PS4 normally.
- Repeat the action that originally produced the error.
If the PS4 is frozen, hold the power button until it shuts down. Avoid repeatedly unplugging the console while it may be writing data. Disconnect power only when the system is completely unresponsive and a normal shutdown is impossible.
2. Rebuild the database in Safe Mode
Sony specifically recommends Safe Mode Option 5: Rebuild Database for CE-33116-4. This scans and reorganizes the PS4’s content database, which can help with missing, incorrectly displayed, or difficult-to-access content. It is the appropriate major repair attempt before erasing the console.
- Turn the PS4 completely off. Do not leave it in Rest Mode.
- Press and hold the power button.
- Release the button after the second beep. The second beep occurs about seven seconds after the first.
- Connect the DUALSHOCK 4 directly to the PS4 with a USB data cable.
- Press the controller’s PS button.
- Select Option 5: Rebuild Database.
A wireless controller may not work in Safe Mode. If the controller is not detected, try another USB port or a different compatible, data-capable cable; some cables provide charging only. Do not turn off the PS4 while the database is being rebuilt. The process may take minutes or considerably longer depending on the amount and condition of the stored data.
Rebuild Database is not the same as Initialize PS4. It is the less destructive option Sony places first, but it is not a guaranteed repair for physical drive damage or severely damaged system software.
See Sony’s Safe Mode instructions if the menu does not appear.

3. Back up your data before resetting anything
If the PS4 reaches the home screen, back up your data before attempting an initialization or software reinstallation. Verify that the backup completed successfully rather than assuming it did.
Depending on what your account and console support, you may use:
- USB storage: Copy saved data or use the PS4’s backup and data-management tools with a compatible USB device.
- PlayStation Plus cloud storage: Use cloud saves only if you have the relevant active subscription and the saves have synchronized successfully.
- A full PS4 backup: Useful when you want to preserve more than individual saved games, such as installed content and settings.
Local saves, screenshots, video clips, settings, installed games, and applications may be affected by a reset. Digital purchases can generally be downloaded again after signing in to the correct PlayStation account, but local saves and personal media should not be considered recoverable without a backup.

If the PS4 only starts in Safe Mode, do not assume that a normal backup is available. If the saves are irreplaceable, consider contacting Sony before choosing a destructive option.
4. Initialize the PS4
If rebuilding the database does not resolve the error, Sony’s next step is to back up your data and initialize the console.

- From the PS4 home screen, open Settings.
- Select Application Saved Data Management and back up your saves using an available method.
- Return to Settings.
- Select Initialization.
- Choose the appropriate initialization option shown on your console and follow the on-screen instructions.
Important: initialization can erase data stored on the PS4’s internal storage. Do not proceed until you have backed up important saves and media. Menu wording may vary slightly by system language, region, PS4 model, or software version; Sony’s regional pages may use “initialise” instead of “initialize.”
5. Reinstall PS4 system software from USB
Manual system-software reinstallation is a later escalation, not the first fix. It is appropriate when the PS4’s software is damaged or the normal recovery process fails. Sony warns that this process deletes all data on the console.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallYou need a PC or Mac, a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, and the official reinstallation file from Sony’s PS4 system-software page. Prepare the USB drive with this exact structure:

└── UPDATE/
└── PS4UPDATE.PUP
The folders and filename must use the required spelling and capitalization. Avoid names such as PS4UPDATE (1).PUP, and do not download firmware from unofficial websites.
- Format the USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT.
- Create a folder named
PS4at the drive’s root. - Inside it, create a folder named
UPDATE. - Save Sony’s official reinstallation file as
PS4UPDATE.PUPinsidePS4/UPDATE. - Connect the USB drive to the PS4.
- Start the console in Safe Mode.
- Select Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software) and follow the prompts.
Do not confuse Update System Software with Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software). An update attempts to install or repair software while preserving the normal setup where possible. Reinstallation removes the console’s data and installs the operating system again.

If the PS4 cannot enter Safe Mode
Try the following before escalating:
- Turn the console fully off before trying again.
- Hold the power button until you hear the second beep.
- Connect the DUALSHOCK 4 directly with a USB data cable.
- Try another USB port and another compatible cable.
- Disconnect unnecessary USB devices.
- Use a stable power connection and avoid interrupting the console during storage activity.
If Safe Mode still will not start, the cause may involve the controller connection, power system, internal storage, or a deeper software or hardware failure. Do not repeatedly force shutdowns or use random firmware files. Follow Sony’s repair and Safe Mode guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDoes CE-33116-4 mean the PS4 hard drive is bad?
Not necessarily. CE-33116-4 is not Sony’s specific HDD-reading diagnosis. Storage hardware becomes more suspicious when the error returns after rebuilding and initializing, or when it appears alongside frequent freezes, crashes, very slow loading, installation failures across several games, repeated Safe Mode screens, or clicking and grinding noises.
Sony lists other codes separately—for example, CE-34305-5 concerns failure to read information from the HDD. That does not mean CE-33116-4 has the same meaning. If the error survives software recovery, seek a repair diagnosis before buying or replacing a drive.
If the error happens with only one game
Sony’s CE-33116-4 instructions are system-level, but a problem limited to one title justifies these additional checks:
- Restart the PS4 and check for a game update.
- If the installation appears corrupted, delete and reinstall the affected game.
- For a disc-based game, inspect and gently clean the disc, then test another title.
- For a digital game, confirm that you are signed in to the purchasing account and that the download completed correctly.
These are conditional game-troubleshooting steps, not a guaranteed CE-33116-4-specific remedy. If several games or applications produce system errors, return to the system-level recovery sequence.

What not to do
- Do not choose Initialize PS4 before backing up important data.
- Do not confuse Rebuild Database with a factory reset.
- Do not interrupt database rebuilding or system-software installation.
- Do not use unofficial
PS4UPDATE.PUPfiles. - Do not assume the HDD is defective from CE-33116-4 alone.
- Do not replace the drive before attempting the official recovery steps if your data still needs to be preserved.
When to contact PlayStation Support or seek repair
Stop repeating software resets and use Sony’s support or repair pathway if:
- CE-33116-4 remains after initialization.
- System-software reinstallation fails.
- The PS4 cannot enter Safe Mode.
- The console repeatedly freezes, crashes, or returns to Safe Mode.
- Other storage-related errors appear.
- You need to preserve irreplaceable saved data from a console that no longer boots normally.
A recurring error after a clean initialization or reinstallation points more strongly toward a storage or hardware problem than a one-time database issue. Sony’s official starting point remains its CE-33116-4 support page.
