RuneScape and Old School RuneScape are not publicly documented as officially banned by Jagex in mainland China. However, players may still face blocked or unreliable access because of mainland-China network filtering, international routing, Steam connectivity, or Jagex’s own security systems. Some players report success, sometimes with a VPN or other routing service, but Jagex does not support or endorse VPN connections and warns that they can cause failed logins and access blocks.
Is RuneScape officially banned in mainland China?
There is no clear public Jagex statement establishing a China-specific region lock for RuneScape or Old School RuneScape, and the available evidence does not identify a verified Chinese regulatory order specifically banning either game.
That makes “RuneScape is banned in China” too broad. A service can be difficult to reach without there being a formal legal ban or a Jagex nationality-based restriction. The failure may instead come from a mainland network, an overseas route, Steam, a local device, or Jagex’s anti-abuse systems.
Jagex does maintain a Chinese-language EULA covering RuneScape, Old School RuneScape, the Jagex Launcher and related software. That is not the same as a mainland-China publishing licence, a dedicated Chinese version, a guarantee of access, or permission to use a VPN.

Why can RuneScape fail to connect from China?
“Blocked” can describe several different problems:
- Mainland network interference: China’s internet filtering and international routing may affect a website, CDN, login endpoint or game connection. The impact can be domain-specific or intermittent, and can vary between home broadband, mobile data, hotels, universities and offices.
- Jagex security blocking: Jagex may reject a connection because its IP address, proxy, VPN, browser, device or traffic pattern appears risky. Jagex’s Access Blocked guidance says the block generally concerns the connection rather than the account.
- Steam availability: Steam adds its own store, download, CDN and authentication layers. GreatFire’s testing page for cdn.steampowered.com has recorded mixed results for Steam-related endpoints, including blocked, intermittent, unresolved and accessible statuses.
- Local technical failure: Incorrect device time, browser extensions, antivirus software, Windows Firewall, DNS problems or a damaged installation can produce similar symptoms.
Community reports describe the RuneScape website failing to load, clients stopping while loading configuration, firewall-style errors and different results with and without a VPN. These reports demonstrate that players have experienced real access problems, but they are anecdotal and inconsistent; they do not prove a permanent nationwide RuneScape block.
Can people in mainland China play RuneScape or OSRS?
Some players report that they can, while others cannot connect reliably. The result may depend on the ISP, city, current filtering, route to overseas services, VPN exit IP, client, account configuration and the game world selected.

That is best described as playable for some users under some network conditions, not officially supported or guaranteed. RuneScape and OSRS may also behave differently because they use separate clients and game services. A player might reach one login or download endpoint while another remains unavailable.
The official OSRS world list shows international locations including Japan, Singapore, the United States, Germany, Brazil and South Africa. It does not show a mainland-China world in the list reviewed. A nearby Japanese or Singaporean world is still an international server, not a Chinese server, and geographic proximity does not guarantee a good route or low latency.
Does Jagex recommend using a VPN?
No. Jagex says it does not support or endorse VPN use to connect to its services and advises disabling a VPN when troubleshooting an “Access Blocked” message. Its support documentation also warns that VPNs can interfere with the games, websites and Jagex Launcher and can cause failed logins.

- Commercial-grade Security Anywhere – Protect your home network with AiProtection Classic, powered by Trend Micro. And when away from home, ASUS Instant Guard gives you a one-click secure VPN.
This creates a practical conflict for some mainland-China players: local network restrictions may make a VPN appear useful, while Jagex may view the VPN’s shared or frequently changing IP address as suspicious. Switching servers can solve one routing problem while creating another. A VPN can also add latency, cause disconnects and change effectiveness without notice.
Do not assume that using a VPN automatically bans an account. The evidence supports the narrower conclusion that VPN traffic can cause connection and login problems. Community claims that particular VPNs caused account flags are unverified player allegations, not established Jagex policy. Users should also check the laws and network rules applicable to their location before using any routing service.
What does the “Access Blocked” message mean?
According to Jagex, an “Access Blocked” page usually means that Jagex security has denied the connection, not that the account itself has been banned. If the page displays a Ray ID, record it before closing the page; Jagex asks users to include that identifier when reporting persistent problems.

Use this diagnostic sequence without assuming that any single test proves the cause:
- Identify the product: RuneScape, OSRS or Dragonwilds.
- Identify the route: Jagex Launcher, standalone client, Steam, iOS or Android.
- Try the official RuneScape website, OSRS website and Jagex Support.
- Write down the exact error, time, platform and Ray ID, if present.
- Check the device clock, date and time-zone settings. Jagex lists incorrect time-zone settings as a possible access factor.
- Temporarily disable browser extensions such as ad blockers while testing the website or launcher authentication.
- Check antivirus and local firewall permissions.
- Try the official launcher or client rather than assuming Steam is the only route.
- If a VPN or proxy is active, test with it disabled, following Jagex’s own troubleshooting advice. This is not a guarantee that the mainland network will then work.
- If the problem occurs only on a mainland-China connection, compare it with a permitted connection in another jurisdiction where you are legally and practically able to test. This can help separate a network-route problem from an account problem.
- Contact Jagex Support with the product, client, operating system, network type or ISP, exact error and Ray ID.
How to interpret common symptoms
- Access Blocked: Usually a connection-security denial rather than proof of an account ban.
- Configuration-loading or firewall error: Could involve network filtering, DNS, a local firewall or an unreachable Jagex endpoint. The message alone does not identify Windows Firewall as the cause.
- Too many login attempts: May follow repeated retries, shared or rotating IP addresses, or suspicious traffic. The official error-code categories list this separately, but the China-specific cause cannot be confirmed.
- High ping or disconnects: More consistent with distance and routing than with proof of a formal block.
Does Steam work for RuneScape in China?
Steam may be an additional source of trouble, but it is not necessarily the sole explanation. RuneScape is listed under Steam app ID 1343400, while OSRS has support material under app ID 1343370. Installation, Steam connectivity, game launching and Jagex authentication are separate stages.
- If Steam itself will not load, the likely issue may involve Steam or mainland network access.
- If Steam loads but RuneScape cannot authenticate, the failure may involve Jagex or the connection between Steam and Jagex services.
- If the game installs but stops while loading configuration, investigate the network path and local security software separately.
Switching from the Jagex Launcher to Steam does not bypass every network or authentication restriction. Conversely, a Steam failure does not prove that the RuneScape service itself is region-blocked.

Are RuneScape and Old School RuneScape treated differently?
No separate China policy for RS3 and OSRS is established by the available evidence. Jagex’s Access Blocked guidance explicitly covers both games. Their clients, endpoints, Steam integrations and account circumstances can nevertheless differ, so success with one title does not guarantee success with the other.
Is Dragonwilds different?
Yes. Jagex announced in April 2026 that RuneScape: Dragonwilds was expanding into Asia Pacific with Simplified Chinese, Japanese and Korean localisation. Jagex also operates Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese Dragonwilds pages.
That announcement concerns Dragonwilds, a separate title and commercial launch. Chinese localisation or an Asia-Pacific expansion for Dragonwilds is not evidence that RuneScape or OSRS has received a mainland-China launch, licence or unblocked network route.
Mainland China is not the same as every Chinese-speaking region
Availability should be discussed specifically as mainland China. Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan have different network environments, platform conditions and legal contexts, so a test result in one does not establish access in another.
