The next day, Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty reportedly told employees that Xbox needed “smaller games that give us prestige and awards.” Booty reportedly did not literally say “games like Hi-Fi Rush,” but the timing made the comparison unavoidable: Tango had just produced one of Xbox’s most distinctive and critically celebrated games.
The contradiction was real, but the full story is more complicated than “Microsoft shut down a successful studio because its game failed.” Microsoft praised Hi-Fi Rush, described its business decisions as necessary for a healthy company, and said it wanted to concentrate resources on high-impact games and major Bethesda franchises. It never published a detailed, studio-by-studio explanation for why Tango was selected.

What happened, in order
- January 25, 2023: Hi-Fi Rush launched as a surprise release on Xbox Series X|S and PC, including Game Pass. Xbox’s launch announcement presented it as a new rhythm-action game from Tango Gameworks.
- 2023: The game earned strong critical attention and awards recognition. Xbox later called it “award-winning and beloved.”
- March 19, 2024: Hi-Fi Rush reached PlayStation 5, expanding beyond Xbox and PC.
- May 7, 2024: Microsoft announced the closure of Tango Gameworks, along with Arkane Austin and Alpha Dog Games, while restructuring Roundhouse Studios.
- May 8, 2024: Booty reportedly told employees that Xbox needed “smaller games that give us prestige and awards.”
- August 2024: Krafton disclosed that it had acquired or integrated the Tango team and the Hi-Fi Rush intellectual property.
That sequence created the headline contradiction: Microsoft closed the studio behind a game that appeared to exemplify the kind of project an Xbox executive said the company needed.
What Microsoft actually said
The important distinction is between the verified reported wording and the popular paraphrase. Booty was reported as saying Xbox needed “smaller games that give us prestige and awards.” The available reporting does not establish that he named Hi-Fi Rush during the town hall.
#1 Best Overall
Commentators connected the remark to Hi-Fi Rush because the game fit the description so neatly. It was original, stylish, critically respected and smaller in scope than a blockbuster such as Starfield. But “Xbox said it needed games like Hi-Fi Rush” is an interpretation of Booty’s comment, not a direct quotation.
That difference matters. It prevents the story from becoming a fake direct admission while preserving the underlying issue: Microsoft’s stated portfolio goal seemed to conflict with its treatment of Tango.
Why Hi-Fi Rush fit the description
Hi-Fi Rush combined rhythm-based combat, cel-shaded animation, licensed music and a deliberately comedic tone. Its attacks, movement and environments were synchronized to a musical beat, giving Tango a clear identity beyond the horror games for which it was best known.
Tango was founded by Shinji Mikami and had previously made The Evil Within and Ghostwire: Tokyo. In its oral history of the game, Xbox described Hi-Fi Rush as an effort to show that the studio could make something different. The result was a polished, unusual game that generated substantial goodwill for Xbox.

Xbox executive Matt Booty was also reported as calling it a “great game” that “did well for us.” Those statements support calling Hi-Fi Rush a critical and reputational success.
They do not establish that it was a major financial hit. Microsoft has not publicly disclosed a complete sales, revenue or profit breakdown that would show whether the game met its internal return targets.

“Small” did not mean cheap
One of the most misleading shortcuts in coverage is treating Hi-Fi Rush as a tiny indie project. Compared with a large open-world release, it was smaller in scope and had a more focused team. But the developers’ account says it was developed secretly for nearly five years, grew beyond its initial team and was not an inexpensive indie-scale production.
That distinction is central to the business question. A smaller game can still involve years of salaries, production overhead, technology work, voice recording, music licensing, localization, quality assurance and platform support. A polished AA-style project is not automatically a low-risk experiment.
The surprise launch may have reduced the cost and pressure of a long marketing campaign, but it also limited pre-release awareness and made sales forecasting more difficult. Game Pass engagement, direct sales, awards, brand value and profitability are separate measures of success.
Why did Microsoft close Tango?
Microsoft’s public explanation was broad rather than specific. Sarah Bond described the closures as difficult decisions needed to maintain a “healthy business.” Booty’s reported internal message emphasized prioritizing high-impact titles and investing further in Bethesda’s blockbuster franchises.
Microsoft did not say that Hi-Fi Rush was a creative failure, nor did it publish evidence showing that the game itself caused Tango’s closure. It also did not provide a full studio-by-studio account explaining why Tango, rather than another team, was selected.
Reports and commentary raised possible factors including wider restructuring, the performance of Tango’s earlier games, leadership changes and Microsoft’s cost-cutting efforts. Those possibilities should remain attributed speculation, not established causes.

The most defensible reading is that Microsoft was making a portfolio decision. A company can value the prestige generated by a distinctive game while deciding that the cost, staffing model or long-term output of the studio behind it does not fit its current strategy. That may be rational from a corporate planning perspective, but it is difficult to communicate when the closed studio has just delivered the clearest example of the desired category.
The contradiction is about two different meanings of “success”
The apparent inconsistency becomes easier to understand when “success” is separated into different metrics:
- Creative success: reviews, awards, originality and critical reputation.
- Player value: engagement through Game Pass, word of mouth and audience satisfaction.
- Commercial success: sales, downloadable content, revenue and profit.
- Strategic value: strengthening Xbox’s identity and differentiating its catalog.
- Studio sustainability: whether the team can produce an acceptable pipeline at an acceptable cost.
Hi-Fi Rush appears to have performed strongly on the first and fourth measures, and Microsoft’s own statements suggest it did well in at least some respects. The public record does not tell us enough about the third or fifth measures to conclude that Tango was financially sustainable by Microsoft’s standards.
A successful individual game therefore does not automatically make its studio secure. Conversely, a studio’s earlier or less successful projects do not erase the value of a breakout title. Microsoft was evaluating a team, a pipeline and a broader Bethesda portfolio—not only the review scores of one game.

This was part of a wider restructuring
Tango’s closure was not an isolated response to Hi-Fi Rush. The May 2024 announcement also affected Arkane Austin and Alpha Dog Games, while Roundhouse Studios was reorganized. That broader context points to a portfolio-wide restructuring rather than a simple punishment for one underperforming release.
It also explains why the public justification sounded corporate. Microsoft was trying to describe a change in resource allocation: fewer or more concentrated investments, greater emphasis on established blockbuster franchises and a focus on projects judged to have a sufficiently large impact.

The credibility problem remained. If Xbox wanted distinctive smaller games for prestige and awards, closing a proven team made the strategy look self-defeating. The company appeared to want the outcome—creative differentiation—without necessarily wanting to maintain the organization that had produced it.
What happened to Tango afterward?
The original Microsoft-owned Tango operation was closed in May 2024, but the story did not end there. Krafton later disclosed an investment in the Tango development team and the Hi-Fi Rush property. Krafton’s materials identify the game as one of the notable properties associated with the transaction.
Krafton’s official Hi-Fi Rush website continues to present the game as a Tango Gameworks title. That means “Microsoft killed Tango forever” is no longer accurate. The closure, layoffs and disruption still happened, but the team and intellectual property were not permanently erased.
The acquisition also creates an interesting contrast. Microsoft, one of the industry’s largest companies, decided that maintaining Tango no longer fit its priorities. Krafton subsequently saw enough value in the team and property to bring them into its portfolio. That does not prove that Microsoft’s decision was financially irrational; the two companies had different structures, budgets and strategic goals. It does show that the studio’s creative value remained visible to another publisher.
The most accurate conclusion
Microsoft did not literally announce, “We need more Hi-Fi Rush games,” immediately after shutting Tango. The reported comment was that Xbox needed smaller games capable of delivering prestige and awards. Hi-Fi Rush became the obvious example because it had just done exactly that.
The contradiction is therefore genuine, but it is not proof that Microsoft believed the game had failed or that the company’s only goal was blockbuster releases. The stronger conclusion is narrower: Microsoft appeared to want the brand value and creative distinction of a game like Hi-Fi Rush while deciding that keeping Tango operating was not worth the cost or strategic complexity.

A corporation can admire a game’s cultural impact and still close the studio that made it. For developers and players, however, that distinction offers little reassurance unless the company can explain how the next award-winning, smaller-scale project is supposed to survive.
